Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great gaiters I spent a long time in the store trying on different REI and OR gaiters when I finally decided on these based on medium stiffness and good fit with my OSLO boots. I wear a size 13 and the medium gaiters were perfect. I used recently on a 4 day excursion where I needed to wear this 100% of the time. I have pretty skinny legs/calves and I wondered if the strap on the top would pull tight enough to stay up and they did. The bottom strap going under the boot also held up well. I didn't ever get hot either and they were comfortable to wear for 10 hrs a day straight. Completely waterproof in wet snow at least.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Gaiter, Questionable Durability I've used these gaiters for mountaineering, snoeshowing, and ice climbing. The fit seems dialed in, just like the OR Crocodiles. Breathability seems acceptable, never super breathable (not that the best Gore Tex even is), but my legs never felt particularly humid either. Overall, I was very happy with the performance of these gaiters. Durability is another story. The velcro stitching ripped during the first week, but not all the way through. It still holds and seems to have remained snow proof through, despite several more weeks of heavy use. The interior coating seems to be wearing as well. For now, it still performs well and it seems to be crampon-proof. I'll probably cash in on the warranty for a replacement at the end of the season and hope the next pair holds up better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable Coming from the Marine Corps I am dumbfounded as to why we do not have these. I did my first run with them in 6' deep snow of Flagstaff, AZ about 10,000 feet. Not only did they keep me 100% dry but warm too. We all had purchased them and noticed a massive difference without them. I will never go again without them. Absolutely loved them and how dry they kept me. If I had to find something to gripe, when you adjust the strap to fit, the loop to hold the excess strap doesn't hold it and ends up flopping around. That's it. I will be staying with these forever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I used these gaiters while guiding hunters for elk in Colorado. 2013 was the rainiest season on record and these gaiters did the job. They are easy to put on versus my old gaiters which have back zippers. They are truly waterproof and lightweight. I thought I might be concerned with noise made rubbing together while walking, but that was not a problem. Sizes seem to run just a tad big.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from longtime OR fan Well-designed and fairly priced second pair of OR gaiters-first ones lasted 20 years. These are clean, simple, improved where it needed to be (under-foot string changed to tough flat buckle-strap; two lace hooks instead of one), and let alone where it worked (simple effective top squeeze lever buckle). Well cut taper fits leg/ankle bend, very little spare fabric. Looks clean, athletic, yet not flashy. I wear gaiters all winter in Montana.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid gaiters Used on a recent trip in deep, wet snow. My boots and pants underneath stayed dry, from the outside and from the inside as well. I tend to run hot and I didn't have any breathability issue with them. Great set of gaiters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from haven't tried them yet, but... These are exactly as advertised. They go above the calf to prevent sliding down, hook in laces at the front. Velcro closed along front with a sturdy strap for beneath the boot. The bottom section is reinforced to prevent rips while the top secures with a strap. I'm glad I spent the extra money. Good purchase. I plan on using these for hunting and hiking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kept out the snow. Used these on a trail race. They did exactly what they are supposed to do.

How tall are these compared to the women's version? Some of the reviews on the women's version cite that one as a little too short to stay up (doesn't quite reach the area below the knee/above the calf) so I am considering getting the mens version.

Asked by: Carolyn W
The men's Verglas Gaiters are 17 inches tall. The women's gaiters are 15 inches tall.

I bought the large to go with my Salomon X Ultra Mid 2 boots, the gaiters fit perfect over the boot however, my calves are not big enough to fill the top even with warming layers on. Should i go a size smaller? Or find new gaiters.

Asked by: nickabuja
Sizing may depend on the size of your boot. If your boot is small enough to go down a size, we recommend purchasing a smaller size gaiter.

For *any* gaiter: I do a lot of volunteer work, off trail in bush, grass, etc. Need gaiters to keep garbage out of my boots, but I would expect strap under instep to wear out almost immediately. Are there alternatives to strap, and if so, what and where?

Asked by: PA dave
All of the gaiters that we carry have some sort of instep strap. The Verglas Gaiters are designed for mountaineering and rugged outdoor use. The Hypalon instep straps are made from a very durable material.

How do I wash these? They got pretty muddy the other day and the dirt didn't come off when I rinsed them.

Asked by: 617Boston
We recommend hand washing the Men's Verglas Gaiters with warm water and a detergent that will not leave any residue, such as the Nikwax Tech Wash; https://www.rei.com/product/724687/nikwax-tech-wash-10-fl-oz Finally, let them air dry.
