Great Carrier for Baby
My wife and I had seen some other folks in the neighborhood with this product on their bicycle and thought it was neat compared to the "rear wheel" style carriers. The iBert fits great on my wife's cruiser bicycle and our 10 month old loves riding. He is crawling, standing, and supporting himself easily so the weight of the helmet does not bother him. We feel very safe that he is in the front, can see what is going on, and we do not have to worry about him riding behind us providing commentary a la Rerun. Easy to install, feels very secure, does not interfere with riding the bicycle.
Lots of fun, a few compromises
My daughter loves this and I'm a little disappointed this is probably the only summer we'll get to use it since I think she'll be too big (at age two and a half) to fit next year. The included, but optional to install, steering wheel is a nice touch too. There are some compromises if you have a shorter top bar. I can squeeze in between this carrier and my bike seat, but getting back up is a little tricky. Not the fault of the carrier. Also, there is a quick release coupling, but when the carrier is removed, there's still a 6-8" aluminum stake attached to the headset pointing toward you. All in all, it's been a lot of fun and I'm quite happy with the purchase
Great product! Little one loved it
I attached the ibert seat to my K2 Zed. Total installation took about 15-20 minutes. I did have to adjust the front stem to put on the mount that holds the seat. I'd say the hardest part was installing the steering wheel to the seat. The screws are tough to get to at the bottom and did not align perfectly but I got it to work! The iBert seat did not get in the way of steering or riding the bike. My little one was definitely confused at first, he did not know if he enjoyed it or not. But he did not cry so i will take that as a win! We did buy the new version which comes with the steering wheel. He had a blast turning the steering wheel. Very excited to use this more when the weather gets better. I definitely prefer this to other traditional seats for babys behind the rider. I was able to talk to the little one the entire time and make sure he wasnt getting bored. This is recommended for minimum of 12 months. Our little one was 11 months when we first used it. He is standing, doesnt mind the helmet, and had a great time!
Fun for me and my toddler!
I bought this product about six months ago for my son just after he turned one year old. I'm glad I got it I love being able to have him in front of me instead of riding behind it's much more of a European way to do things. He enjoys the view, rings my bell and makes whooping sounds when we go down hills! He's happy putting on a helmet now and he gets excited when we're going to go out riding. I've had it on the street and the smoother trails in my area and it steers and feels well balanced. My only critiques on the product are that the mounting bracket and base of the chair are a little loose and wobbly, the connection is secure however. The restraint/seatbelt system is a little difficult to get adjusted correctly, but once done it holds him in.
A Blast!
I have been using this seat for rides with my son since we was about 1-1/2. He is now 2-1/2 and we both have a blast with it! It doesn't make the bike unbalanced like you might suspect. It is very stable and solid, even if the kid shifts around. I wanted to be able to go on rides WITH my son, and not go on a ride and drag him along. I love that my son gets to enjoy the ride and doesn't spend the whole time looking at my back, or my back wheel. Since he is in front with me and I am leaning close to his head, we can talk easily about things we are seeing and we really have fun. It is pretty simple to remove if you want to ride solo, which I do often. Definitely a great product for the money.
Love!! Our favorite toy!
We love this seat. I bought the seat for my one year old after having seen a Dad and son using one. It is the best! I attached it to my bike very easily (and I am no engineer). It is super stable and doesn't take any getting used to at all. My son loves to go on bike rides in it and never gets tired of riding with me. I had a rear seat for my older kids and ths is so much better. He loves interacting with me as we ride. I love that I can hear all he has to say about things we pass. Mine did not come with the padded steering wheel but I don't think I would want it to. I love the simplicity of it just as is! Perfect!
very well thought out product
I bought the carrier for about a month now. I must say that I am very impressed with this product. Very well thought out and made sturdy. It appears very comfortable to my daughter and she enjoys the ride. very easy to fix it. The carrier doesnot topple the center of gravity. Even with the carrier fixed there is still a good amount of space between the carrier and your seat to accomodate for you to stand and peddle if you are riding uphill. If at all I have to change one thing it would be the attachment that the carrier sits on. It would have been more stable if it had two forks and not one but it is still stable.
Best way to bike with kids
We got one of these for our first child, and loved it so much we got a second when #2 arrived. It's very versatile, and we rode with our kids before they met the 1year minimum (so long as they are stable and hold their heads up well, they'll be fine). It's much better than a rear-mounted seat, as I can interact and talk to my child, and he has a better view of everything. My kids have actually fallen asleep in them a few times! One limitation is that because it's mounted right in front of the adult, I have to splay my knees slightly to account for it, but it's minor. Too bad the weight limit is only 40lbs!
Nice Having Your Little One Close to You!
I like this seat, and it is something I definitely recommend to other people. I like that my daughter can sit so close to me and that I am able to talk to her and point things out to her. I like that my center of gravity with this seat feels normal and natural. A couple of the things I don't really like is your kids won't fit in this for very long. My daughter is 18 months old, and she will probably only fit comfortably in it for another six to 12 months. It's difficult to stand and ride uphill.
Serious Safety Issues, needs mods
I'm 5'8" and have the iBert mounted on a 16.5" mountain bike. The steering is fine once you start, but starting and stopping is quite cumbersome since the carrier takes up so much relative room. But most importantly, the screws that come with the mounting kit are not very long, and they barely clamped down on a 1.25" steerer tube. On a recent ride, the screw came undone, so the carrier fell onto my top bar. I couldn't steer, and I couldn't dismount because the carrier was in the way. Luckily, I was able to cup my arms around my child and roll us onto a kudzu mound. Very scary! I have been able to make this product usable by getting longer screws from my local hardware store, and shored that up with a washer, nut, and lock-tite. FWIW, my LBS (which specializes in setting up bike commuters) will not sell the iBert because of this very issue.
