So glad we bought this....
We bought these for our first primitive area camping trip and are glad we did. We have Nemo insulated mats that inflate to about 2.5" and were a little unsure if these would work ... they did (you can use them with any 20" mat it seems). I didn't inflate the mat to full capacity and it worked like a champ. I am not a small framed guy and they supported me with no problem. The only issue I had with it was cleaning. I read the care instructions and it said the stays can be removed for washing. From what I can see they do not come out, however I simply washed the dirt off with a hose and hung dry. These are definite back savers and are worth every penny.
Modify the "chair" into a "lounge"
I have both a Trekker Chair and a Trekker Lounge. Comfort-wise, I like the Lounge better, but the Lounge is 18 oz and the Chair is only 9 oz. So I slit the bottom of the Chair, which allows the mattress pad to stick out, and the Chair is now effectively a "lounge". I didn't like doubling up on the air mattress in the seat anyway, which raises you too high off the ground. The only thing you're missing is the micro fleece "pillow" and coverage for the bottom of the air mattress (so you may have to be more careful when using outside your tent), but otherwise you get a "lounge" for the price and weight of the "chair". Works great.
Your Best Investment
I bought this as a gift for my son because I have one which I have owned for a couple of years and I absolutely love it. It has been dollar for dollar the best investment I have made in camping gear. After kayaking or hiking all day, being able to rest my back on a well supported chair is essential for me (I don't have back problems, by the way). When I bought mine, I had no idea how much I was going to like it. Now, it's at the top of my packing list. I simply will not go on an overnight trip without it. It helps my body recover quicker. One of my favorite features is being able to adjust the angle of the back rest, from completely straight when eating to any reclining position when relaxing around the campfire.
I love this thing.
I got this chair for my 25" Thermarest and couldn't be happier. I consider myself a semi-minimalist/semi-lightweight packer but a chair became something I missed sorely on a 3-day backcountry trip where each day of difficult hiking ended. I did a lot of research on weight and packability before deciding on this one, and the dual functionality made sense. Definitely recommended.
My packable perk
When backpacking, I only pack the essentials and one thing that is for comfort. I brought this little guy on an extended trip to the Lost Coast and I'm sure glad I did. The four other guys with me were fighting to sit in it when I wasn't. The Trekker Chair is easy to operate and comfortable. Whether you are sitting on the ground or a log, it is going to do the job. I also appreciate the fact that it is light weight and that I can pack it with my tent poles.
Worth The Price
While I have never been a fan of carrying extra weight, this is well worth the little extra - when you want something to sit on other than a rock or a tree, this will fit the bill. Lighte than most fold up chairs that others use, the fact that you have a back rest is almost heaven!!
SO COMFY
This thing is great. Packs up to an impressively compact size. The back support is such a treat after a long day of hiking and/or climbing. One thing I didn't anticipate was how warm the chair would be with the mattress inserted. Was camping recently in temperatures below freezing and noticed that after sitting in the chair for about 10 minutes, my butt and back became toasty, almost like I was sitting in a heated car seat. Also works well without the pad if you want to take it out to the crag and rest your back between climbs. Get it! You won't regret it.
Backcountry comfort.
I bought the 20 inch version and use it with an REI Flash Insulated Air Sleeping Pad, long size. Just insert per directions, inflate to desired comfort and enjoy! Sets up and pack away quickly. With stuff sack it weighs 10.45 oz. Given the comfort, it's probably worth the extra weight even on long trips.
