Really cozy and doesn't drain the battery
We used the Ignik Flipside Heated Bed Cover in a Scamp Trailer on a low 40s evening and night. We don't have a fancy battery to plug it into, so we used a deep cycle lead-acid RV battery and this heated cover performed for over 10 hours and kept a perfect heat for sleeping (we had it at 40%) and for hanging out before sleep (we had it at 100% for 1.5 to 2 hours before going to sleep). It auto turns-off after 10 hours, which is great, so it doesn't needlessly burn battery power. I really like the subtle heat it puts off and I like the three different heating zones. Heating Zones: (1) legs and feet, (2) your core and (3) your head. The legs/feet and the head zones are the warmest and the core is not as warm, which makes a lot of sense to prevent overheating. It felt great to snuggle onto a warm bed that was the perfect temperature. It made the scamp feel luxurious. It comes with a nice long cord so it can reach your battery. It is light and can roll up nice and small. The outer shell is soft and comfy, however the cover (shell) isn’t removable from the heat source… so you can’t actually wash the cover, and to me, that’s a design oversight. And I think it should come with an outlet adapter, so you could plug it into a regular outlet. In addition to the scamp, it would be nice to use this heated bed cover at home on the couch but I don’t want to have a battery hanging out in my living room (ha! I know, they make heated blankets for the house, but why not be able to use this too?) If I could, I’d give 3.5 out of 5 stars, but I’m doing 3 just because you can’t remove the outer shell to wash it. But, I have to say...it made my night's sleep wonderful, not too hot, not too cold. Just perfect. What we used: a deep cycle lead-acid RV battery (with a cigarette lighter battery adapter - female cigarette lighter socket to 12v battery, alligator clips ). The blanket’s male cigarette adapter plugged into our adapter just fine. (see photos)
Warm and cozy
The Ignik Flipside Heated Bed Cover is a nice addition to the car camping experience. It makes cold winter nights much more enjoyable and works with either a power station or 12V car plug (adapter included; more about this later). I could feel the pad start to warm up within 15 seconds of being turned on and it fully heats up within minutes. The pad is easy to set up and fits nicely between a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag, offering a snug and comfortable night of glamping. One downside is that there is only one strap to secure it to a sleeping pad so it can slide a bit. But I’m sure this could be easily remedied if it was truly bothersome. The soft, suede-like fabric is 100% recycled and folds up nicely. I do wish it came with a carrying case or bag for storage. The length is great and fits most single sleeping pads. There are also snaps on the side to connect to other Ignik pads. It also has a strap to secure if holding it around one’s back like a cape- although this isn’t practical while being tethered to a power station. One major downside is that the battery/power station needed to operate this heated bed cover is not something most campers have and it can be quite spendy, some in the $500-1000 range. Their website states that a minimum 250Wh capacity 12V power station is needed. This makes the whole device only usable for a very specific subset of consumer and only for certain types of trips. Another nice use for it is as a cozy blanket for long car trips using the included car adapter. Overall, a nice addition to the well-supplied car camper, but requires an expensive and heavy power station to function. I would love to see something like this that has a lower power draw that could run on a more affordable power station.
Like...but,
I want to love this product, but the use case is very specific. You need to be in a vehicle, or somewhere with a 12v power outlet. Unfortunately my goal zero power adapter was a bit finicky. It's a few years old, so I'm likely going to need to buy a new one before using this again. I really wish there was an adapter for a traditional outlet. A lot of vehicles have those now so that would be ideal to expand the usability options. (Example: my husband and I are on a 6 week roadtrip and the Airbnb's are old...which means cold. I wish I could use this on the bed at night!) Overall though, I think the material is very nice and I love the small footprint (in use and when folded up). Our pups also love to lay on it to stay warm in the truck.
Nothing groundbreaking, needs work.
Fairly unimpressed with this heating pad. The microsuede cover was silky soft and promising. I was a little disappointed that this didn’t have a versatile sleeping pad pouch to keep from sliding around, the snaps are meant to link it with other Ignik products only. The real bummer came from the performance. Left to warm up for 10 minutes in my car (32°F MN fall), it was hardly warm and more of the warmth was concentrated in the body area, as opposed to the head and feet areas like the pad claims. The lack of a plug adaptor also limits what you can plug into. Another downside in my book, the controller only shows the timer setting and not the heat output (in spite of plus/minus buttons). Would make more sense to show heat setting as well. Overall, not a complete dud and very soft, but fell short of my expectations.
Excellent for those cold nights!!
I love the heated bed cover! We went snow camping in our truck camper, experiencing temperatures ranging from 19 to 27 degrees, and it made a huge difference for us. We had a single bed split between the two of us under our sleeping bag, and we were toasty warm. We even had to lower the temperature one night because it was too warm. I expected the power draw to be higher in the cold temperatures, but we ran this off our EcoFlow Delta while also powering a Dometic fridge and overhead lights. Overnight, we only lost about 5% of our battery power. I would love the option to connect two-bed covers and split the power between them, but this heated bed cover will definitely be a permanent addition to our camping gear!
Heated sleeping pad takes the edge off the cold
I used this fun new toy under my sleeping bag, on top of my kingdom cot. The control is very easy, and it's very nicely warm, although it wasn't really that cold when i used it. I think that I'd put it inside the sleeping bag on cooler nights. My power supply was a Jackery 300, which worked well. My only wish was that there a a better way to keep it from moving. Either a grippier material or an elastic or velcro band to keep it secured to the pad or cot.
Game Changer in my RTT
This is exactly what I needed to keep warm in the off-season and keep using my RTT. The cord with the cigarette lighter plug is long enough to reach from the tent to my Goal Zero Yeti1000, which I keep in the vehicle. I sleep in the parking lot up at the mountain when I go snowboarding and this has made these overnight trips go from SO COLD, to super cozy. I look forward to crawling into bed at night. I also love how you can set the hours (1-10) to automatically shut-off so it doesn't waste your battery.
Outstanding Product
Takes a while to warm up, but once it does, you will stay warm all night. Doesn't feel that warm to the touch, but after laying on it for a while I found the highest setting was actually a little too hot so I turned it down. I used it on top of my mattress pad and below my sleeping bag. In the back of my truck with the windows cracked and 37 degrees outside with no other heat source, I was quite cozy with setting at 60. It's hard to tell exactly how much power it draws. Set at 100 it seems to be constantly drawing 42 watts. Set at anything less and the power reading jumps around rapidly between 42 and 0. After using it for a while, I calculated setting it at 60 draws about 15-20 watts. This is by far the most efficient source of electrical heating I have found. Product also seems well made, I really like the feeling of the fabric. There are loops along either side for securing to your sleeping pad, and snap buttons for connecting to an additional heating pad. Another reviewer was upset you can't see the heat setting. She is wrong, you can easily toggle between heat and timer displays by pressing the triangle button. As long as this pad lasts for a few years, I think it's a great product. I'm actually only writing this review because almost everything online about this pad is negative. I'm very happy with it and hope Ignik continues to make them so I can buy another when the time comes.
Camper van game changer!
This bed cover is awesome! I often sleep in my minivan (which I've converted into a camper), and this bed cover has really amped up the comfort factor. I've used it multiple nights in the Oregon high desert - camping outside of Bend and Terrebonne. Super cozy! Turn it on 10 - 15 mins before you plan to crawl into bed, and you're good to go!
Bought for wife, use for myself!!
I originally bought the Ignik Flipside for my wife to stay warm during some winter excursions we had planned. I didn’t however realize how much I would also love using it. We even sometimes use it at home when it’s really cold outside (we had to buy a separate wall plug from Ignik). I think come spring when we really start camping regularly we will buy a second one and look into buying some of the other Ignik products that look cool. Great Product! 5 Stars!!
