Have to remove wheels to store flat.
The photo shown is the way this product is packaged. Do not be fooled into thinking it simply folds flat for storage. The wheels must be removed, then replaced once folded flat. Following the instructions, this requires the use of an adjustable wrench. Not convenient. It does straddle the bow of my perception tandem quite well with the wheels attached. Would only use with sit on top style kayaks. A second kick stand would help stabilize the cart when loading the boat without second person. Otherwise the width of the cart makes transport much more stable and the bicycle tires make it easier to turn on uneven ground.
The best I have ever used
Despite my reading the poor ratings first, I still purchased this cart (for the non-sale price). I've been using it for several weeks and am scratching my head as to why someone would give it a poor rating. It is great, totally functional and, not difficult to use at all. My only complaint would be that I needed to purchase four nuts and bolts when I assembled it. The box was damaged and open when I received it so perhaps the nuts and bolts fell out in transit. Do not let the negative ratings dissuade you. This cart is far superior to the small, fat tire carts I have purchased in the past.
good cart with some problems
Upon getting the cart home and out of the box I found the wheels would not spin.Luckily I have bike tools and had to disassemble and adjust the bearings at home as well as grease them.Do NOT leave the store without having the bicycle mechanic check the bearings for grease and proper bearing adjustment! Poor quality control!
expect to replace the tires
Great design works on my Rendezvous Canoe. Tires will not hold air out of the box. Would not trust these tires out in the bush. Tires used out in the woods should be solid not tube style. Holes in the cradle adjustment do not line up and are hard to get the locking bar thru. Expect to clean them up yourself. I think it is a good design and would recommend it if the tires were replaced. I plan to replace them myself. For the money I expected better craftsman ship. Recommended with reservations on the tires.
Sturdy as advertised.
I bought the ATC boat cart because I needed a heavier duty one to transport our 75 lb recreational tandem kayak down the road to our launch spot. Unlike my compact stowable cart, this one carries 90% of the weight which I especially appreciate on the uphill return trip. The tandem is approx 29 inches wide & rests easily on the cart. If you have a narrow kayak you might want to verify the fit.
walking trailer
I use this to walk my kayak 4 blocks to the boat launch. It would not be good for a long kayak tour since it doesn't stow in a hatch but it would fit in a canoe and is sturdy enough for larger boats. I may buy the mini if I do a tour but this is great for this purpose and is better traveling than the mini on rough terrain.
AWESOME
This device made us like canoeing much more. We have a 79 pound canoe and before we bought this device, carrying the boat up the boat ramp was awful. Now my 5'-1" wife can portage the canoe up a steep ramp all by herself. It has improved our enjoyment very much. Strongly recommended.
Not a great cart
I bought this cart about two years ago. I am very disappointed. 1) The mechanism for holding the cart upright (arm swings down on spring) is very cumbersome. You have to do it with your hand, while you are holding your kayak, almost impossible. I have a another cart which stays upright by it self, so you can keep your hands on your kayak (example: Malone Clipper Deluxe Universal Kayak Cart). This is a major problem with this cart. 2) The nematic tires are a nuisance. Each spring you need to refill them. My other cart has solid plastic wheels, so no maintenance required. Nematic tires are lighter, but if we are trying to save weight, why is the rest of the cart made of steel? 3) The strap used to hold the kayak to the cart, again is very primitive and not well thought out. 4) It is ugly. Not a key criteria, but this cart is not going to win any design competitions. I almost never write reviews, but my dissatisfaction is at a point where I want to help other avoid the same mistake I have.
Makes Carrying loads easier
So far have used in only for delivery/retrieval of my kayak, but am looking forward to using it for my canoe, general gear when going off road and game retrieval when hunting. I could not be more pleased.
