Rated 5 out of 5 by from Proud Owner Of Benchmade The best knife I have owned. I spent hours online searching for the best company, and then for the best model of knife. This knife was the perfect match. The size is large enough for most every task besides hacking down a tree, and small enough to clip inside a pocket. The AXIS assist opening mechanism is powerful, and when the blade is closed, the force that goes into opening the blade is instead keeping it closed, so the blade is not always under tension to spring open. The secondary lock on the knife is like a gun safety, preventing it from being unintentionally opened in a pocket, or from snapping closed on a finger during use. I recommend purchasing the large Rainbow Of California sheath that REI carries, as it fits perfectly, and allows you to carry it on a belt or TAC-TIED to a pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! I'm completely in love with this knife. For 30 years I've been using the same knife and refused to upgrade. I finally broke down and bought the Benchmade 580S Barrage because I wanted something lighter weight, a knife that I could work with one hand, good ergonomics, high quality and nice esthetics. This knife has it all. In the short time that I've owned it, it has already seen a fair amount of use and so far is a pleasure to work with. All moving parts have perfect fit -- no excess free play anywhere. My only complaint is that there were no instructions on how to open it without cutting myself (I'd never worked one of these spring assisted knives). It comes out of the box sharp as a razor. Worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply an awesome knife! I own many knives, both folding and fixed blade types (some custom) and after owning and carrying this knife daily for close to a year I can easily say it is my favorite knife. The build quality is outstanding. The blade takes and holds a very sharp edge. The assisted opening is great! I do recommend using the safety lock feature when carrying it in your pocket, though. I typically carry it in my back pocket using the clip. I use the same pocket for my wallet. One night while putting my wallet back in the pocket I inadvertently (and unknowingly) opened the knife and a bit later when I went to retrieve the wallet out of my pocket I cut my thumb on the razor sharp blade. Careless me. ;-) This is a great knife made by an outstanding company, Benchmade. Well worth the cost. This is one solid, strong, sharp knife and any future knives I purchase will definitely be Benchmade!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything Ya Need Always go to a store to buy a knife, test it out. Heard that the spring has problems on these models. [...] Benchmade has a great warranty; lifetime. If you look at all the materials that were put in to create this knife.. you'll see its just made for any condition. 154CM is a great steel, strong, keeps its edge and is expensive. The grip. Made out of Valox plastic which is made of thermoplastic polyester resins are semi-crystalline... and is resistant to a variety of chemicals including aliphatic hydrocarbons, petrol, oils and greases, dilute acids and bases, detergents and most aqueous salt solutions. (did some research on the internet).Overall great knife. Cant say anything bad about it, look forward to taking it on my next camping trip, if this snow ever goes away.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great balance of all things This is great medium weight knife. Benchmade sells a lot lighter, and there are a lot heavier knives. I wouldn't use this knife to live in the forest but I wouldn't go there without it. Its a great middle ground of weight and size. The assisted opening spring gives it a wonderful feel and if i buy another folder from Benchmade that would be on of the requirements for it to have. The pocket clip is sturdy as you can get with out doing something crazy. I bought the knife to use at my work in a commercial kitchen to open receiving shipments and blade will stand up to cardboard all day long. It has a good grip I just with there was some sort of rubberizing on the finger holds but anything they would put on would flake off so most likely that is for best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Everyday Carry Benchmade has a well-deserved reputation for making great knives. The Barrage is no exception. I bought this knife as an every day carry / work knife understanding that I probably would not put it through the same trials as my last knife, which I still carry in my bunker coat. The main take aways for the Barrage are: Sharp out of the box, excellent locking mechanism, very solid open position, and very light weight. I have only one criticism, and that's the handle panels are made of plastic which *feel* very light and cheap - I suspect they are actually pretty substantial. and I'm getting used to them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A beauty but it has issues Love the knife. Feels great in hand but within a day the blade refused to open all the way. Seems to be a problem with the spring. I am surprised that a Benchmade knife would fail so quickly and am hoping that this is just a fluke.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm in love! I'm in love with an inanimate object. And that object is the Benchmade 580S Barrage Knife. It's a beauty to behold in my hand. Comfortable, elegant, simple, sharp, slim, and just the right heft. The AXIS spring assist opening sprints the blade out faster than an eyeblink. It works much better than those folders where you have to flick your wrist. The secondary safety on the top of the spine, as Dane Allison reviewed, either keeps the blade locked open or locked closed. I can't see using the secondary safety to keep the blade locked closed, but I can envision where it would be a good idea to keep the blade locked open more securely. A likely scenario for the latter is when you are using the point to stab an ice block to make chunks. Thanks also to Dane for mentioning the Rainbow of California Large Knife Case. Though, the Barrage is a folder, I trust the clip to hold the knife in place in my pants or shorts pocket only when I'm walking, not when I'm jogging or bicycling. In the latter two forms of exercise, I'm moving my legs too rapidly (well, maybe not so fast these days, as I'm old and slow now). Moreover, when I'm bicycling, the knife may even be horizontal or angled clip downward, possibly sliding out of my pocket to be gone forever. What a loss that would be! (Not only in terms of money, but also love. Who knows how long Benchmade will manufacture the Barrage?) The Barrage fits the Rainbow of California Large Knife Case perfectly, a snug fit. I plan to bicycle with the knife case attached to the waist strap of a fanny pack. The knife will be secure, and easily accessible. Oh, one more thing, the knife cut through cardboard like it was butter.

When this item says "will not ship to New York" do you mean the city, or state? It is legal in most of the state. I live in 11791 zip code.

Asked by: wolfy95
REI takes a conservative approach to knives that we allow to be shipped to New York. Because the bulk of our stores are in the New York City area we abide by the laws most relevant to our locations.
