Very Versatile!
My girlfriend has the old wave, and I seemed to be reaching for it instead of my Gerber every time I needed a blade, or pliers, or screwdriver... etc. Great improvements on the New Wave. Every tool locks into place, when the pliers are opened the blades cannot be deployed... The one thing that I thought I would never use on this tool that I seem to find myself using regularly is the eye glass driver. It seems that the same day I got it in, my Smith's started to come loose. I think the best thing about this tool is the size of the blades on it. I don't even carry another knife with me on the river (except my rescue knife). This tool just rocks!
Carry this and you won't need a toolbox
This is a spectacular tool that can replace a toolbox when you don't want to carry a toolbox. Built to last forever, with file for both wood and metal, good knife and even a serated blade, and great saw. Small tools hard to flip out, but excellent in design. Wire cutters have spot for very heavy wire, and even a wire striper, and screwdriver small enough to repair eye glasses. Too heavy for week-long backpacking, but fine for day trips worn on belt. Really great for using all around the house instead of going to the shop for toolbox, and great for road trips. This is a tool is built to pass onto kids and grandkids. Buy it.
Best thing I own
When I was in the Peace Corps in the Kalahari desert for two years (on the South Africa/Botswana border) this was the best thing I owned next to my headlamp. I built an entire bookshelf for my library using the saw and file, butchered whole goats with the straight and serrated knives, used the scissors as an awl to punch new holes in my belt after eating too much goat, and foiled would-be robbers with the one-handed opening sharpness. Dust will gum it up a bit, as others mentioned, but some good cleaning and oiling will usually fix this. A bigger scissors would be nice, as would some rounded edges on the outside, but otherwise this thing is [*] brilliant.
I have a Leatherman, I can help.
This is the Wave I have purchased. It is almost always on my belt, ready to use. I used one all summer doing sound and stage crew work at music festivals. From cutting spike tape to loaning it, to a musician so they could trim their fingernails, to fixing mic connectors, this does it all. I would recommend hunting up and buying the bit kit that is available for the Wave, among other Leatherman models. The knife comes with an extremely limited selection of bits. The bit kit extends the usability to various sizes of blade and Phillips screw bits, Torx, Allen. One can even buy an extension that also allows use of any 1/4" bits in addition to the Leatherman bits.
The most unappreciated gift
About 12 years ago my parents got this for me on a trip to the Denver REI. At the time, I'd never heard of REI, nor did I fully care why they got me a Leatherman. However, it has turned out to be one of the most useful gifts I have ever received. It's functionality is remarkable. I've held many different positions in the last 12 years and there hasn't been one where my Wave didn't prove useful. I've used it as for computer repair, home repair, overt and covert security camera installation, auto repair, bike repair, and many others. I take it with me on every hiking and backpacking trip I take. I keep it handy at home to take care of quick repairs, too. It's extremely durable; I've never broken anything on it. The only downfall I've found is that it is a pain to clean.
A toolbox on your belt
I got my first Leatherman tool about 23 years ago, and it was finally time for a new one. I looked at several models, and the Wave offered all the features I could want, felt good in my hand, and boasted the legendary Leatherman quality (made in the USA too!!) It does not disappoint! Unlike my original tool, this one allows you to access the knife blades, file, and saw without unfolding. All the tools lock in the open position, which a a great...and safer...feature than what I was used to. I couldn't be happier.
Indispensable product
I've owned a succession of multi-tools for 15 years and this is my clear favorite. Leatherman's products are sturdier than its similarly-priced competitors, and sturdiness is a must with this kind of product. The Wave has the best design I've seen on a Leatherman - in particular, the four back-mounted knives/file, which keep the weight/size down without sacrificing implements. One recommendation to LT: make the leather case standard, and keep the logo small. The black Velcro case is cheap and wears out, and the big yellow logo sticks out too much.
Cycling Across the U.S.
I used the New Wave for leading a cycling trip across the US with ten fifteen year olds. Normally, for road biking or mountain biking, I would say a tool like this is overkill and rarely comes in use for working on bikes. Bike touring, however, is a different beast, and includes lots of moments where zip ties need to be clipped, sharp parts filed down, new packaging cut open, tent poles cut down, etc. I didn't use it nearly as much as my bike multitool, but I fully recommend it for anyone camping or bike touring.
Wave- Leatherman
This is a very good knife with a lot of different uses. I recently took it with me on a 10 day trip to the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. The only knock on it is the blade got pretty bad rust spots while there. I had cleaned it daily and used gun oil as a protectant, but it still didn't prevent oxidation. May not be the best knife if you plan on using it in a rainforest or marine environment. Otherwise, it's a very good all-around multi-tool
great multi tool
I own a small motel, and needed a multi tool to carry around with me for random odd jobs. This tool does a great job. I havn't run across a job that this tool doesn't do well. When you have to do some serious screwdriver work, you should probably just grab your screwdriver, but if it is a small job, this tool can handle it. It is small enough to wear on my belt daily, and big enough/sturdy enough to handle all the things I throw at it. Not as heavy as some other tools out there, and I like that. I don't want to wear a wieght around my waist. Some people complained about pinching when using the pliers, but I have not had any problems with that at all. All in all, I'm very happy with the pruchase. Would definately buy it again!
