Meh for trail - not good for EDC
I think of a Leatherman as having three main functions. If any of those functions is compromised by the design, then the tool is a fail. In the attached photos, my 20 year old Leatherman Super Tool and on the right, the Signal. 1) Pliers - the design of Signal (due to the placement of the steel, spark, and whistle)the pliers remain farther apart than I would like (or anyone else with smaller hands). 2) Screwdriver(s) - again the design lets the tool down. The hex driver and hammerhead are placed in such a way that the tool can't close when the screwdriver is deployed. Lack of torque and further challenges for small hands. 3) Knife/blades - good enough, but not good enough to overcome the shortcomings listed above. Unfortunately I spent a week in the woods with the Signal and didn't feel right about returning it. But I'm back to carrying the Super Tool and the Signal is in the gear box at home.
Really outdoor specific multitool
As a Ranger for the Dyrt I sometimes get to review gear and on this occasion I was able to get something from Leatherman. Having an old PST and wave from my scouting days I was wondering what could possibly be new and useful. I was pleasantly surprised by the outdoor specific additions which are built into the Signal. The hammer is awesome for those stubborn tent stacks and the whistle and firestarter might just be what you need to survive if you end up lost in the backcountry. Overall, well done Leatherman.
got it for Philmont adventure, but use it everyday
Originally procured for my son for the Boy Scout adventure "Philmont". it came in handy many times, the sharp blade is excellent. After the trip I mis-placed my Skela-tool (awesome tool also), and borrowed his. The little hammer you would think, nice gimmick, but I use it! great idea. I love the harder pliers and cutter, I don't worry about breaking. It is heavier than the Skela-tool, but, its quite a bit more. I'm seriously thinking of getting one to replace my Skela-tool, waiting for a new color (hopefully).
Very useful Multitool!
I bought this Leatherman the last time, REI had a 20% off sale - and honestly, didn't use it all that much. This past summer I took a trip to Spain, France, Italy, and Kenya. I found myself using the tool quite often, especially the knife, saw, pliers, wire cutters, hammer and screwdriver. My sister, who lives in Kenya liked it so much, I gifted it to her before I came back to the states. I'm sure she's been using it quite a lot. I just bought a replacement for myself today!
Good every day carry tool
Leatherman started dropping pics of this tool about 6 months before it came out. They had me hooked with the color scheme alone. Sharp looking gadget! I carry a multi tool every day but had stuck primarily to the cheaper Leatherman tools due to my propensity to loose them! Dividend/coupon time came around and BOOM! It's in my pocket! The tool feels sturdy even with all the cutaway on the frame. I like the bit driver, but, the tool doesn't close with it extended, makes it a bit cumbersome. Sharp bade with a beefy backbone. I like the hard wire cutters with the replaceable blades. No fear of ruining the tool when using them. One thing that irks me a little is that there is a little play in the handles when opening the tool. One would think that at $100 that everything would be smooth. Other then that and the closing issue with the bit driver it's great!
Love biner clip
I had a Leatherman knife with the carabiner clip and loved having it on my belt loop. Since I also frequently need a little saw and a pair of pliers, this tool seemed like a perfect daily carry. Heavier than I like and has a few odd features, but it is worth it.
Great Multi-tool
I've used many Leatherman products over the years and this is the one I carry every single time I enter the backcountry. I mainly got this model for the ferro rod as a backup. If you're familiar with Leatherman products than you know that every tool functions as it should and the blade holds a razor-sharp edge and is easy to sharpen ( the diamond-coated sharpener works great)
Good Camping Tool
I got this model because it was on sale for $75. I am pleased I did. It is slightly heavy for EDC (every day carry) and has a bunch of tools I wouldn't need everyday, so I might look into something a little leaner for that purpose. It works great for camping however. The knife is very sharp and great for little to medium sized jobs. Haven't tried the saw yet. The pliers work well and have gotten some good use. The bottle opener/clasp works great and is fun to fling bottlecaps around. The hammer is very small and would only be good for very light jobs. The fire starter does spark easily, but would only use in a pinch or if practicing my fire making skills. The whistle is relatively quiet but would save your voice from yelling if lost. The only downsides are that I wish it came with another carry place for bits for the driver, so you could carry four total heads and that it were lighter.
Solid Leatherman product
First appearance seemed somewhat gimmicky for Leatherman. Idea of a few additional useful tools for daily use, or the rare survival/emergency situation appealed to me, and I figured Leatherman would not market junk. Knife beefy but sharp. Cuts through thick cardboard with ease, a tough job for many knives. Mini sharpener can quickly hone edge. Does not take place of real sharpener though. Fire starter works. Good tinder bed crucial of course. Little bit of challenge due to its size, but tiny one with you works much better than full size one left in car, in camp, or at home. Saw works great as do all Leatherman saws I've used. I don't care for screwdriver with replaceable bit as Phillips bit too narrow and tends to slip out of screw head. The whistle is not super loud, but would be better than none if you found yourself under rubble after an earthquake. The pocket clip is good option as I now carry this using clip as replacement for previous EDC of Juice in my pocket and good folding knife clipped in for quick access. All in all, solid Leatherman and my negative points are largely personal dislikes not real criticisms of the tool.
Leatherman Signal Review
I have been looking for a multitool with all of these features for quite a long time. I spend a lot of time in the outdoors and this has many useful features that come in handy on a daily basis, as well as a number of less used but great back up items. There are only two different features that would have made it better, one handed opening, and a larger ferro rod. Great tool though!
