I’m a older runner that ran exclusively in ASICS back in the 1970s , 80s and early 2000s but then it seem like ASICS fell behind with all the other shoe manufacturers and didn’t produce anything worth running in for years. This new Magic Speed 4 is the first ASICS I’ve purchased in years. Gotta say it is good , the lockdown, the ride is great you can feel the bounce of the plate. I do think it’s a little stiff and ridged feeling from what I was expecting, hopefully the foam will soften up some as I run in the shoes. But I don’t think there is a perfect running shoe for any of us. You gotta take the good with some bad. How ever I do day good job ASICS
This year I have been looking for a replacement shoe for the Gel Nimbus that I have been wearing for years. I loved the "25" but the "26" just did not work well for me. I moved to the Superblast and liked that shoe but it became (and still is) hard to get. Decided to try the Magic Speed 4 and have not looked back. This is a great shoe in fit, comfort and versatility. It is on par cost wise with the Nimbus but less than the Superblast 2. I rotate training shoes and tend to use this one on the days where I want to be more nimble and quick. Many lighter shoes tend to wear faster but this one is holding up well.
I used to be an ASICS guy years ago before committing infidelity with a few other brands. That is until about a month ago when I picked up a pair of ASICS Novablast 5 and loved them, especially the fit! So, figuring I’d use those as a daily trainer, I picked up a pair of these Magic Speed 4 for speed work and races (using my REI dividend). They do not disappoint. For only the second time in my life, I have no heel slippage using these shoes (the first time being with the Novablast 5). The fit is secure and I can feel the shoe propelling me forward (to an extent). As long as ASICS doesn’t go screwing up either of these with future “updates,” I think I’ll be an ASICS guy again for a long time.
Excellent half marathon and speed work/interval shoe. The carbon-fiber plate provides the bounciness that makes these shoes come alive at faster paces. As a forefoot striker, this has a much improved softer ride than the previous version due to the strategically placed FF Turbo under the plate.
It is a really comfortable and responsive shoe when pushing forward! It is also a light shoe! It’s a great tempo shoe In conclusion!
My boyfriend loved them. Exceptional grip. Excellent value for a supertrainer. Ideal for marathon-paced workouts
More cushioning than the 3s. Basic structural porpetys and appearance as the 3s. They may be a tad bit heavier than the 3s. And weather wise they may be a tad bit hotter than the 3s because the upper mesh is not as good as the 3. Overall I perform better in these than the 3s and I loved the 3s as well. I still have a pair of the 3s that I use as cycling shoes now. Over all if 3s did you well then the 4s should too. I love the 4s and use them as my every day trainers. The only thing is they don't have an all black pair of the 4s pewey to that.
So this is a difficult review to leave, as there isn’t anything particularly glaring wrong with the shoes. I have about 50 miles on them but the fit is just problematic. The mid and forefoot widths are good but the volume is just too much, so I’m finding it difficult to lock down the forefoot for fast paces (workouts and repeats). I have the opposite problem with the heel, I have to leave it kind of loose (there is definitely no issues with heel slip!) but it tends to bother my Achilles during longer efforts. I have even given lock laces a shot but because of the positioning of the laces and the lack of tongue padding it didn’t really help either issue. So overall, I really like the platform but the upper is passable only, so I’m giving 3 stars.
I've owned the previous models of the Magic Speed and absolutely loved them. This model however actually HURT me! After my first long run in this version I could barely walk at the end due to pain in the bottoms of both feet! I'm not sure what changed but this shoe is no longer my long run trainer and that makes me rather sad since it used to be such a good shoe. It could definitely use a bit more cushion for a carbon shoe.
My new favorite shoe for up tempo steady long runs or interval sessions. It’s a match made in heaven (or ASICS design team) to combine and elevate the already great experience riding Magic Speed 3 and Superblasts altogether. That’s the sweet spot. Also, they’re super stable and comfortable. I even ran 30km last week with them and my feet never felt a thing which is ofd considering they ARE plated. Amazing!
