Mixed Feelings, unfortunately
Mixed feelings about this coat. I want to like it, really. I have a big Helly Hansen arctic winter coat that is one of my favorites, and I thought I'd like this too. But it has too many problems. I love the look, the color and the general feel of wearing it. It has just the right amount of insulation, perfect for my needs. It is described as "warm" in the product description -- it's for cooler weather than my rain shells, but not so bulky as a winter coat. (I'd estimate that it's for 40-60 degrees, and suitable for rain & wind.) I'm mostly a large because of my frame and slightly growing belly. In this case the large fits my frame & belly perfectly, and it is very comfortable. But the sleeves are about two inches too long! I know Velcro is essential to the front, protecting the the zipper from water seeping in, so I try to accept it even though I don't like the risk to all my tech shirts. (I've ruined a few.) But the Velcro backing is very stiff, and scratches my hands when I use the zipper. This is especially unavoidable because there is a Velcro pad right by the bottom of the zipper -- exactly where I need to fiddle with the zipper fittings to zip up the coat. So I simply cannot zip up the coat without scratching my hand every time. Lastly, and I just don't know why they do this... the pockets are so high on the chest that I have trouble using them! They definitely aren't "hand-warmer pockets" because it is uncomfortable to keep my hands in them -- my elbows need to bend so awkwardly. The pockets should be about 6-8 inches lower. I will be returning it, despite how much I like the look, fit and light insulation. I cannot abide the extra-long sleeves, the harsh & poorly placed Velcro, and the too-high-on-the-chest pockets.
