Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I have had this shoes for 3 months and there are some holes on the sides. I use the for running. They are very comfortable, but they are too expensive for how long they last.

I've been using the Altra Rivera 4 for about five months now, mainly for light activities like playing with the kids in the yard, running errands, and walking the dog for 0.5 to 1 mile in the mornings. While the comfort of these shoes is undeniably great, I've run into a few significant issues. The biggest problem is the back heel support, which has completely worn through already. For shoes that are relatively new and used for such low-impact activities, this level of wear and tear is unacceptable. Additionally, the toe area is starting to come undone, which is another durability concern. Moreover, the color is misleading. Despite being advertised as black, they are actually a noticeable grey, as other users have also pointed out. They're not close to the color shown in the images. Overall, while the comfort is good, the lack of durability and the color discrepancy are major letdowns for this price point.

Bought the black pair for work. Received them pretty quickly and the website lists them as "black" and the box lists them as "black" these are grey. I have to return and look for a different pair which is gonna take another week to recieve. Very disappointing. Picture added for detail between two other pairs of black shoes.

Best shoe I've ever had. So comfortable. I've had each model and this is the best one yet. The Rivera is their narrower model, which is perfect for me. Please never change the Rivera 4.
Great shoes. I bought them for work due to them appearing darker online ( my shoes for work need to be close to black) and they are very gray. A little disappointed...
These shoes have made my heel feel so much better. I am a tennis instructor and these are by no means designed for competitive tennis because the lack of structure in the forefoot is not ideal for changing directions quickly. The flexible upper and extreme cushioning in the sole make for an amazingly comfortable shoe though. I feel like I'm walking on pillows. They have held up in both the sole and the upper for feeding balls and controlled rallies. I was having severe heel pain when I bought the shoes but after a month the pain has pretty much subsided.
The amount that the sole extends beyond the body of the shoe at the sides of both heal and ball of the foot gives me stability against ankle sprains. I happily wore both the original Rivera and the Rivera 2, which gave me a perfect fit, but this dimension is smaller around the ball of the foot in the Rivera 4, making whole shoe worryingly unstable for me. I'm told that the Rivera 3 is the same, so I can no longer wear this series. I can only hope Altra corrects this problem in the next Rivera, as there are still very few "slim" models to choose from!

The midfoot is too snug. The shoe's attributes fits my needs but it is too slim in terms of width. I cant even wear normal thickness socks with these. I like these for walking and occasional runs/workouts but my feet feel suffocated. I understand there are other Altra's that could fit the bill but I like these aesthetically and they're not too bulky! I can wear them everyday. I feel like the slim foot shape alienates a lot of potential customers so please consider offering a wider fit.
I've used Lone Peak 5/5/6/7's, Timps, Solstices, and the Rivera. These shoes are really comfortable, but I got them for work; after only 3 shifts, they smell horrendous - while my other shoes have no odor after 8-10 months. I don't know what is different about them, but they've been taken out of my lineup after only a few wears. I'd recommend these shoes for running, but I'd caution against getting them for daily wear.
I just got these shoes, and I'm a daily 3-6 miles walker. So far I'm loving them. I bought them at a running store and sized up 1/2 over what I normally get and am happy I did. I'm a woman but often buy the men's shoes because I'm a size 10 in women's and the men have more size options. These shoes are definitely gray, although advertised as black....just FYI if you're going for a specific color.
