Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

My choice of brand for life!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This lightweight, breathable, well-constructed, well-cushioned product is my personal go-to. Whether in training or in competition, the Escalante Racer continues to allow me to hit my PRs over and over again. As an endurance enthusiast, I feel like this brand has been constructed for me. Bravo! Keep up the consistency. I will continue to use Altra as my endurance brand of choice.

Indifferent towards the update! Great shoe

Ran my second marathon in this and felt just as expected. 0 break in period needed. Only gripe is the tread. Want to remain minimalist, but seems like a more durable design or material is plausible. Pictures are of 40 miles of use

Great shoe! More support but still light.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Got to test run the new Escalante Racer. Planned on doing 3-5 miles but I ended doing 8. Overall, I like the shoe. A little more heavier and sturdier than the last iteration but still a good ride.

An instant classic

I've run three pairs of Escalante Racer 1.0s down to the nubs, they are my all-time favorite running shoe (and the original Escalante before that). So to say I was apprehensive about a 2.0 iteration would be an understatement. But I'm very happy with what Altra did here. They kept the essential qualities that made the ER great, updated with some new materials and a few small tweaks. I find them to be a little more stiff, not as flexible in the mid- and outsole. It's a tradeoff of agility for greater stability. But I appreciate the firm ground feel, and they still feel light and responsive. I expect they will have better durability as well.

These belong in everyone's rotation!!!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Have now done a couple runs in these and wow if you loved the original Racers I think you'll be really happy with these. They feel really close to the originals as far as the firmness and ground feel. I think the fit is even better...they have a nice roomy toebox as you'd expect but they feel almost more stable than the originals. For the lovers of the original Racers I'd say have no fear...they didn't screw up your shoe and if you like the originals you'll be thrilled. In a day where all the running shoes seem to be adding more and more stack/cushion these are a breath of fresh air. These belong in everyone's rotation!!!

Don't listen to the trolls, it's still an amazing shoe

There is very, I mean very, little difference from the first iteration of the racer. It still runs broken in right out of the box, the weight difference of 2oz is not noticeable even after several miles at sub 7min pace. It's more breathable. I can barely tell the difference in the midsole. Do not let the trolls (all saying the exact same thing, probably 1-2 same people) sway you from purchase. Either way, the original racers at size are not available for purchase anywhere, so it's time to settle. Why? Because there is still nothing remotely comparable unless you go full minimalist or go back to running on clouds.

Tried to love, but returning for the original racer

It is a good shoe and I really wanted to love it, but it just does not fit my foot quite like the original racer. It feels just a bit heavier and stiffer. Also, it is just a bit harder on my feet and ankles than the original. I think Altra tried to add a little extra room in these, which is generally good, but they do not quite conform to my feet as well as the original. I found my feet moving around too much within the shoe when I am starting and stopping. I've been wearing Altra's for over a decade and these are still among the best shoes Altra has made to date. They may be a good fit for other people, but ultimately the original is just better across the board for me.

Best road running show I've ever bought

Love this shoe. From the first time I ran in it I could tell this is exactly what I was looking for. Never bought the original but started with the 2.0. However, I have had several Altra shoes over the years. This shoe is amazingly breathable and I love the original foot shape (my Torins did not quite fit my foot with the standard foot shape fit without sizing up). The return on the run is exquisite and the ground feel and stack height are perfect allowing me to run longer distances but without all the cushion that eventually wears on my knees and hips. No pain whatsoever in these shoes. Absolutely love them.

My choice of brand for life!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Escalante Racer has been my go-to pair of running shoes. Whether in training or an event, this lightweight, breathable, well-constructed, well-cushioned product absolutely shines. As an endurance enthusiast, this brand allows me to continue to achieve PRs again and again. This is the brand that has been constructed for me-well, at least that's how I feel! Bravo! Keep the products coming with consistency. I will test everything Altra-related!

Escalante update!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Carried on the fit of Escalante Racer, but better. I wore them on a treadmill run, outdoor run, playing pickleball, and dog walking. Lighter components and maintained neutral, 0 drop, and fast feel.
