I received this product for free from REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. At first I was nervous to try a synthetic bag for my trip to the Adirondacks. The nights were supposed to be very chilly with frost throughout the night (and into the morning), with lots of damp conditions. After using it for four days, my biggest complaint was that this bag would not compress down to the size of my down mummy bag. It came with both a mesh storage bag and compression bag, and the compression bag was way better than my Mountain Hardware bag, but it still didn't compress enough to fit in the lower compartment of my Osprey 65L. I used a different compression bag, still not small enough, but took it with me. Now the positives... The vents actually work! Minimal, but I liked using the vents when I started to warm up (which was quick) over unzipping the side of the bag. I also liked the extra flap to cover my face. It was easy to use throughout the night, even in my sleep. But honestly, the warmth of the bag surprised me the most. Each night got into the low 30s with wind and the bag kept me completely warm and happy. If you have a enough space in your bag, I would recommend this bag.
This is a challenging bag for me to review, its almost like it needs two reviews, one for its merit as a backpacking bag and the other for looking at it as a more casual camping bag. First, I'll say I'm 5'3" 120, use a 55 L pack and do most of my backpacking in the sierras at high elevation. I'm pretty weight conscious as my max pack weight should be 25 lbs. I would not use this bag for backpacking, its far, far to heavy in my opinion, it came to 3.44 lbs/55 oz on my scale. For the temp rating of 35, which for me was 45 or maybe 40 with an extra layer, that is just too much weight. My current backpacking bag, which is a 10 degree bag, that I've use for temps between 28 and 45, weighs 26.45 oz. I also found this bag to compress only somewhat well, down to around 15 inches high and 9 inches wide. Maybe if you're sharing the weight of food/water with another person you could justify the weight of this bag. As far as its use in car camping, I would say that it would be just fine in temps in the 40s. As a side sleeper I found the shape comfortable and had plenty of room in the bag, both height and width. The main zipper works well and doesn't snag or get jammed. The fabric feels pretty standard, its slippery but nothing out of the norm. I also like the vents, but those zippers are tiny and do take some effort to zip up to ensure you're not zipping up the fabric as well. There was initially a very slight odor to the bag that dissipated after being laid out for two days.
I am a big fan of this sleeping bag. I received it during summer months, so I unfortunately have not yet been able to test it in cooler weather, but I took this on an extended weekend trip to Great Smoky Mountain National Park and it treated me quite well! I adore the color, first of all. Temperatures on this trip were quite mild, with lows in the 60s and this bag did not sleep hot. I like the Thermogills that provide some ventilation when the bag is zipped the whole way up. I did find the extra quilt at the neck to be a bit cumbersome in warmer weather. I imagine it would be great in the cold, but it was in the way in the warm nights. I am a side sleeper, so the shape of this bag was absolutely perfect for me! This is honestly the first backpacking bag that I've been able to sleep comfortably on my side in. Also, in an attempt to use it in some chilly weather, I spent a rainy afternoon in the bag in my hammock. It kept the dampness out and kept me roasty toasty!
So, I am a HUGE fan of Nemo and I own their tent, pillow, sleeping pad and sleeping bag! Of course, I had to try their synthetic sleeping bag. I've been interested in one for camping and backpacking. After finally having a good weekend weather window (after weeks of storms and haze), I got to try this out. Now, I already own the disco 30 and 15 and thankfully, the forte 35 is about the same in terms of feel and comfort. I love the spoon shape since I am a side sleeper! Now for some of the concerns: I am a warm sleeper and not even the vents were able to keep me cool when the night temperature were in the low to mid 60s. However, I felt fine when I unzipped the bag and used it more as a blanket since I did feel a slight chill. Though from this experience, this was overkill for a summer sleeping bag and I knew that'd be the case but I still wanted to try. Unfortunately, I couldn't test it in colder weather! I can only speak from experience with their products that their temp rating gets a little iffy the closer you get to temp rating. I'll see if I can update or write another review for the fall season. I used this for a backpacking trip and honestly, I didn't like carrying it. Its a VERY thick bag and even with the compression sack, you need a pretty big backpacking to fit it in. This will take up so much room on my overnight pack, the Osprey Sirrus 34 but it fits fine on my 60L pack. I'd try putting it in on a backpacking pack first before committing to using it for backpacking. I would suggest getting the Nemo Disco 30 if you want something like the Forte 35 for backpacking but weight about a pound less. However, this is great for camping!
Finally reviewing after purchasing this sleep bag in Oct ‘22 and have thus far used it 5-6 times in PNW tent camping and one 3 night backpacking trip. Every time this kept me warm! I’m a side sleeper, tend to draw my knees up and need to flip in the night a couple times. This bag allows that without feeling too constricted, and keeps me toasty (I sleep in a thin merino wool base layer ) Not sure it’s the best bag for backpacking as it’s 3.6lb and didn’t pack down as small and slim say as my previous Columbia Omni tech one, but it was definitely worth it for me with the extra internal room!
Great sleeping bag. The part at the top is so comfortable to sleep with. It mimics the blankets on your bed, and it made a significant difference compared to other sleeping bags I've used. If you like to pull the blankets up under your chin or by your face while you sleep, this is the sleeping bag for you! It's also spacious enough to sleep on your side which I really appreciated. I was able to pack it into a pretty small space in my backpack for a camping trip. Would recommend!
I absolutely loved this sleeping bag when I first got it! This was perfect for me at first and gave me the warmth I needed for cooler temperatures in Colorado. I didn't like the feeling of down so I went with this synthetic bag. However, the quality went downhill after just a few trips. Unfortunately, this bag stains very easily. If you're like me and wear sunscreen or lotions and don't have access to water to clean your skin at the end of the day, whatever is on your face will stain the inside of the bag. Also, do not wash this sleeping bag!! Or if you do, use a gentle cycle and hang it up to dry. I followed the directions on the care label, but the synthetic inside of the bag was ruined on my second wash and has not been the same since. This bag is not good for backpacking and it is extremely bulky and sort of heavier than my other bags. Good and relatively affordable bag for beginners, but not for experienced hikers.
