Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Perfect jacket for trail running!
I received this product through REI's product advisor program. I was sent the jacket in blue, and have used it primarily for trail running these past few weeks. It fits so nicely! The sleeves are long - perfect for my long arms, and it fits well on my body. I asked for the men's version of the flash jacket because men's sizing tends to be roomier for me. For reference, I am 5'8", 160lbs, 34DDD, 30" at the waist, and got the jacket in a medium. I was surprised at how light and airy the jacket feels, while still providing a bit of warmth against the wind or the winter cold. It doesn't add any weight, it's not restrictive in the shoulders (usually a problem for me), and I often forget I have it on. I wore a long sleeve shirt under the jacket most times that I wore it, but it was still comfortable even with a short sleeve shirt on (the sleeves don't feel sticky on your arms). This jacket is a perfect shell to have on days where the air has a bite to it, when it's not cold enough to warrant a warmer jacket. Another thing that surprised me about the jacket is how quiet it is. The material isn't noisy like most shell-type jackets are. The chest pocket is perfect for storing your keys or cash/cards, and the hand pockets fit my phone or gloves no problem. I only got to use this jacket for running these past few weeks, but in the future I would use it for mountain biking and hiking as well. It's a great all-around jacket that feels durable and should last me for years to come. Thank you, REI, for making such great products and allowing me the chance to test out this jacket. It did not disappoint!
Slightly water resistant..
This jacket is more reasonable for blocking light wind than rain. I wore it during a light misting rain and it soaked through almost immediately. Would not consider it water resistant just like I wouldn't consider a polyester shirt water resistant. I carry this jacket on all of my trail runs anyway, if the weather isn't calling for rain. Running downhill in cool weather after sweating is where it shines the most. Also adds a light protection on summits if the wind is blowing. Would suggest taking a real rain jacket on long days or when expecting bad weather. Sizing: I'm 5'10" 160 pounds, size medium fits well.
An Excellent Windbreaker
Only two, very minor, criticisms: 1. No zippers on the side pockets, which would be nice to have but are not must-have. 2. If you are not wearing the hood and it is (very) windy the hood may flap a bit. The rear hood cinch is not easy to close the face opening when not wearing the hood. Both of these issues are not really a big deal. Otherwise: The fit is a bit more generous than similar offerings from other brands, which make this good for a heavier layer underneath or if you have larger shoulders. The material is light, the jacket packs up small, and offers great wind resistance.
Great lightweight windbreaker
This is a super lightweight one layer wind breaker. I liken it to the Houdini jacket except with pockets! It performs really well in aerobic activities with its breathability. It is a single layer of material so there’s not really any warmth, but serves its purpose as a flyweight windbreaker. As it excels in breathability, it does let some wind through so on chilly windy days you’re going to need a base layer under it unless you’re really pumping out heat during vigorous activity. The adjustable hood and front zipper function well (not a plastic zipper). The side pockets are really helpful , something that is annoyingly missing with other flyweight wind jackets. The difference of weight is 4.9 oz vs 4.2 of my Houdini (both xxl for what it’s worth). So I guess that’s the cost of the pockets, besides being slightly less packable(larger). The jacket packs into its chest pocket, which serves well for credit cards/license, but not a heavy object like a phone due to weight imbalance. There are 2 large interior loose/open-pockets of the jacket that I couldn’t really find a use for. Great light weight wind breaker WITH POCKETS!!!
Awesome
I LOVE this jacket, especially in winter. Weighs nothing and packs small. Perfect for layering when ascending. Sheds snow instantly. Actively snowing, blowing, or falling from trees this jacket keeps it off you. Ducking under snow-laden pine boughs, just put up the hood and no snow down the neck. If it gets a little windy and/or cooler as you ascend it will keep the wind off your damp base/wicking layer eliminating the rapid cooling but not adding any insulation so you don't overheat. Perfect in all seasons as a ultra-light windbreaker and damp shield, but it's not meant to be waterproof - you still need a rain jacket. Hand pockets are deep and welcome when waiting for layer/bathroom/snack breaks. Chest pocket holds large phones (Samsung S10 fits easily). One drop pocket on the inside will keep items dry and warm against your body. Wrist cuffs are snug enough to keep the breeze out. Hood is not huge (won't fit over a helmet) which is a good thing and cinches down tight if the wind is howling. The fit is perfect for me - slim but not Arc'teryx tight. I'm 5'10" 170 lbs and a Large fits well with room for base, fleece 1/4 zip and the REI Flash vest. The down hoody slides right on over it during longer stops/lunch break. I really can't say anything bad about it other than it's fragile, but that's expected for the weight of the fabric and maybe the price is a little steep but compared to the Houdini it's a bargain. I scored it on clearance for $29 and am sorry I didn't buy two (or three). It's my favorite jacket for the versatility and weight. Buy it - you won't be disappointed.
Zipper broke and REI refused warranty claim
Initially satisfied with the jacket but the zipper broke after light use about 15 months after purchase. REI refused to honor their warranty for a zipper that clearly should not have failed so soon had it been free if a defect in manufacturing or workmanship. Very disappointing.
Perfect Wind Layer!
I have always been skeptical of these "Packable, lightweight jackets" for a few reasons. First, how would they stand up to the cold and wind? This jacket knocks down breezes and gusts like a champion. It is also very comfortable to wear over a fleece layer, no binding in the arms or chest. Second, how much space does it really save? Not only does this jacket pack down to less than 50% of a normal rain/wind layer I am also confident in hanging it from my pack to have at a moments notice without having to dig through my pack. Overall, worth every penny and will be using on every hike!
Awesome but.... where's the XL Tall sizing??!
If it's one thing I absolutely love about REI clothing it's that they offer "Tall" sizing on some of their clothing, on the downside.. it's not offered on all of their clothing and this is one piece I think absolutely deserves to have it. As a 6'4" person it's it's hard enough finding clothing that goes below my belt line, which is why it's so refreshing actually finding decent tall person clothing at REI like my Rainier rain jacket in XL Tall... Seriously it's the best!!! So please please please REI, extend your Tall sizing to your other great products like this wind hoody, especially in the ROCKWALL color!! Also, I think the Swiftland Run Vest and Joggers would benefit greatly if they were a little longer.. just sayin'...
Does the job
Super packable, easy to carry and blocks wind effectively. Pairs well with light or mid weight inner or mid layer for warmth depending on season and weather. On hikes in the pacific NW, I start with just a light breathable shirt knowing that by evening it will get cold and windy. Especially at higher elevations. This on top of the shirt traps the body heat inside and keeps me warm. If the temperature drop is expected to be high I would bring along a light hoodie to wear under it. That should allow for a much wider range of temperature change.
Ready in a Flash
Have tossed this jacket in my pack on a couple of hikes and used it as an outer layer when walking the dog. It's super lightweight and takes up very little space so if you're looking for something without any frills that nails the job of windbreaker this is it. It does have some water resistance but don't think I'd want to use it in a downpour. Downsides for me are it runs a bit large and the pockets don't have zippers.
