avoid the hype. form over function

This is the first review I’ve ever written. I’m not a paid reviewer. Thanks to the Suunto 9 baro Titanium (the “premium” model) I am a Suunto fan no more. I “upgraded” from an Ambit 3 and Samsung Galaxy and I wanted to love the Suunto 9 but after 1.5 years of frustration I’ll be moving on. Pros- Attractive design Quality materials/feel Mostly durable (except for paint on bezel) Watch operation is straight forward after a short learning curve Step counter consistently good Mapping feature helpful (when the GPS works) Push notifications from phone device work well Barometer seemed accurate and I like the storm alerts it can generate when the pressure rapidly changes Cons- Inconsistent HR both with and without chest belt Fails to accurately register temperature (off by over 15 degrees consistently) Failure to measure altitude after constant manual resetting (right now I’m at sea level and it registers over 5k feet altitude…) frustrating. GPS spotty and takes too long to locate. Also requires constant pairing and repairing to Suunto phone app for best shot at working Sleep tracking works but no way to unpack the meaning of the three levels (good, moderate, poor). Would be nice if they told you how to improve sleep score if a poor one. Some other observations- Phone app is pretty basic Lack of interesting watch faces

Fine for casual hiking, maybe

This watch is great for single day trips where you want to navigate a fixed GPX track. However, for anything more serious than that, it falls short. The battery life, even on "Ultra" or "Touring" mode, is wrong. It often claims 160 hours of battery life and then dies in 16. Occasionally, one of the activity modes will be unselectable from the menu, causing the screen to go to static and requiring a restart. You can't turn this watch off. So the battery is always draining in transit. And at night, sometimes it will try to read your heart rate and flash green light all over the place. The heart rate sensor is quite bad, and has read anything from 70 to 100 bpm while it's... not on my wrist. Overall, I wouldn't buy it again, and I would return it if the more serious issues hadn't cropped up exactly 95 days after my purchase.

Difficult pairing with app

I really wanted to like this watch alot. Overall it is a nice watch, has some nice functions, big face, etc, but I have had nothing but problems trying to pair it with my Samsung Note 10+5G and the Suunto app. I have followed every bit of advice on the website and no luck. Without the phone pairing I feel like I have half the functionality that I should have for a watch in this price range.
