I bought the Chameleon 8 waterproof. These shoes are extremely low quality for the amount I paid. The stitching came undone on both shoes within 6 months of wearing. Fast forward 1.5 years of wearing these shoes for WALKING (~95% of the use was for walking), they are basically garbage due to falling apart. Also, the waterproofing did not last a year. I had waterproofing from Merrell that lasted 4+ years. I hope it is just this pair of shoes. This is my experience with wearing this shoe. I have others that I hope hold up significantly better. If I recall correctly, I bought the pair from Merrell, off their website. I figured, since it was a fairly expensive pair of shoes, that it would be high quality and long lasting. I was extremely disappointed. This is my opinion based off of my experience. I have worn other footwear from Merrell that have lasted a long time. This was not it.
These Chameleons were for my son, his third pair. I usually buy them used, because he's still young and and very hard on shoes. This was a special father son trip for 2 weeks. We explored Utan, hiking and repelling slot canyons, and scrambling Hills and washes.
Appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us!
Bought the shoes for hiking and loved them so much I bought a second pair for my everyday shoes.
These are some of the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn, easily some of my favorites. However, I have owned them for less than a year and the inside of the back of the heel has already worn through the material and left a large hole that I have to hold up with my fingers when I put my feet in the shoes. Exactly the same on both feet. I’ve gone back to wearing my old moabs most of the time to save myself the annoyance. I am aware that I am very rough on my shoes and do a lot of off trail mountain climbing, but my older shoes lasted years before getting holes inside the heal. Great shoes, just wish they lasted longer for the price.

I really enjoyed these at first. Extremely comfortable and like the slip on feature. I mainly work in an office but occasionally have to go out in the field so I wanted something comfortable but tough. The problem is they are falling apart after only two months of light use. I’ve got holes wearing in the toes of both shoes and the sole is starting to split at the toe on the left shoe. It’s a shame with how comfortable they are and how well they fit my lifestyle but I won’t waste my money on another pair of merrells

Purchased to replace my earlier generation Chameleons that are finally starting to break down and look ragged, this is a bit narrower shoe with less exposed mesh on the sides but similar fit and comfort that comes from a different manufacturing location and appears to lack a few of the construction details of the earlier version. Shame the waterproof version is NLA and apparently the "Canteen" color has been redefined to have a distinct green overtone not evident either in the online photos or on my earlier existing pair labeled as the same color. A Merrell customer for decades, I expect this pair to wear well and be comfortable, but I'll have to think about the color a bit --- not what I expected.
I walked the entire Camino de Santiago--Camino Francis, Muxia, and Finisterre, 562 miles with these shoes--Chameleon 8 Stretch. I was in them for 42 days. I did this hike during the Summer of 2022. I walked in urban areas, country trails, up hills and down hills with scree, and mountain trails--the Pyrenees Mountain trails outside of St. jean Pied de Port, France to Pamplona, Spain. While others were getting blisters, I did not. I owe this feat to the fact that I had the right shoes, a 33 L pack with water (11 pounds on my back), and light hiking poles for added support. As a result of the Chameleon 8 Stretch Non Waterproof design features, my feet were able to breathe, especially during hot days. Also, this shoe stretched as my foot expanded during the day. I had great support and traction due to the Vibram sole. The shoe dried quickly after I walked through a stream and was rained on. Trail debris such as sand, pebbles, and small twigs, did not enter the shoe. The elastic cord and lock lacing system were convenient if adjusting was needed while on the trail. My advice to you is to please try on many shoes prior to attempting long hikes to see what works for you. Please think about how much you will carry in your pack because that will alter the design of the shoe or boot you will need. This shoe works for me as a light hiker. I am 5'8" and 185 pounds, size 9.5 D, and physically fit.
Thanks for your thorough and great feedback!
I’m wearing them in the Sahel region of Africa. Daily temps in the 110F range, with a lot of sand-like dirt and crushed rock. I’m getting about 2-3 months out of them In these conditions. What makes them great in easier environments are problematic here. Soft soles means I’ve gotten bone bruises landing heavily on rocks. The venting is great but in this heat is still a very real issue. Still, I have found nothing else that gives me this combination of pliability, light weight and overall comfort.
I am ordering my 3rd pair, I wore out my 2nd and glad that I can get another pair, they are light, they fit perfectly, I use a shoe horn to shoe in (a deer antler from a spike that I shot way back). Great narrow profile easy on trails and if I need to climb or walk on rocks or boulders great positive feeling. If and when they get wet they dry fairly quick. I am hoping they keep making this model, since this has been around for a few years now.
Thank you for your great review!
Hi, my name is Dave and I have a Chameleon problem..... Have a few pairs, see video (at least 5). I think I have at least one more or more pair hidden in a box. I know I have worn out at least 2 other pairs. Needless to say I Love these shoes. Wear them on a daily basis. To hike, work, etc. Just blew a heal out while hiking in the Northern Cascades so will need to buy a replacement soon. Please do not discontinue this show. Ever.
