After eyeing this knife for months, I purchased one online from REI - the only option because it is not stocked by any of my local REI stores. First impressions: This knife looks awesome. The black leather sheath feels well made and the stitching is decent. The blade centering, however, is very poor on the knife I received, to the point where I cannot tell if it is making contact with, and rubbing against, the metal liner when closed (see photo). Opening the knife: The only way to deploy this knife is by pressing down/pulling on the flipper tab, normally with the index finger. When attempting to deploy, I had to really exert my finger to overcome the resistance, to the point where it was sore and left a mark on the finger after a few deployments. Each time I deployed the knife, I nearly dropped it because I was pressing down so hard on the tab before it suddenly yielded and flipped open. Conclusion: This is a beautiful and unique knife. I love that Benchmade made this knife, however I would be weary of purchasing another one without inspecting it in-store for quality issues first. My other Benchmade knives do not suffer from poor blade centering. I will be returning this knife to REI and probably not order another one.
Love this knife! I wanted something more refined than a utility or hunting knife. I am often in a professional atmosphere and having a pocket clip showing is a little our of place. I wanted something that fits in a pocket, appears refined and I wanted high quality. This fit the bill. Styling is spot on. Construction is robust. It's a bit on the heavy side. Price point lies between a Gerber and a custom knife (wide bracket, I know). At the time of this review there was only one other review on this site for the 601 Tengu, it isn't good. Hopefully I provided some balance. I own several Benchmade knives, I have been pleased with most. Even when I wasn't satisfied the company was more than willing to take care of me. In contrast to the other review, I feel Benchmade provides consistent quality and top-shelf customer support.
