Works GREAT!
Went over my handlebars hard enough to crack the helmet. I only have a small abrasion and knot. Definitely worth the money and am buying another. Fits true to size.
Brain Saver
I was hit broadside by an SUV and was thrown about 10’. This helment saved my life. The helmets cells were freakishly twisted and the shell was cracked. I came out of it without even a concussion. I was walking and vertical when the ambulance picked me up. Amazing fit, and cooling! I will definitely replace this helment with another wave cell.
Buy this or a MIPS helmet
Ventilation is fine for me, however I’ve never felt helmets present an overheating problem. I prefer the waves cell to prevent yellow jackets from flying into my helmet, and it is likely is more protective than the MIPS approach. weight is the same, and the helmet naturally rides lower on my brow, tight to the top of my glasses, giving better protection for the forehead, the most important spot. Purchase inspired by the concussion suffered by a friend using older helmet. I think it is irresponsible to sell anything but wave cell or MIPS helmets, please get one of them for you and your loved ones.
It's not you, it's my freakish skull.
Thought I'd try out a not stratospherically priced MIPS helmet and grabbed this one. Liked the don't hit me with your car fluorescent green color scheme and that carried over to the little wavy shock absorbing cushion stuff. It would have been the perfect road bike hat if only it didn't come to rest a few millimeters above both of my jug ears. When I put on glasses the helmet sat on the ear pieces and proceeded to drive them into my ears with every little bump. I tried wearing a cap but the helmet always wound up on top of my ears. With some regret I brought it back and am still looking for a new road helmet.
Comfortable, secure fitting helmet
The Bontrager Starvos was recommended by a staff person when I was anticipating buying a new e-bike. I like the simple twist adjustment on the rear, which was unheard of the last time I bought a bike helmet. It has been very comfortable on rides and feels secure. The strap is easy to adjust and stays put. It has good airflow. I do think that anyone should try on a variety of helmets, since all heads are different, but I would recommend this to anyone for whom it is a good fit. I am thankful that I have not had occasion to test it in a collision of any sort, but the fact that it remains adjusted for a snug fit and some of the safety tests I have read about give me confidence in the helmet.
Saved my noggin
Went down on a patch of loose sand while navigating a turn today. Head first right in to a tree. Put a pretty good dent in the helmet, probably saved me from a nasty concussion and definitely saved me from a serious head laceration. Thanks to the Bontrager/Trek crash protection policy and the great folks at REI Princeton I was able to get it replaced same day
Brain Bucket
I bike 1000's of miles/yr, but stupidly never with a helmet. I almost always bike solo so I have a good view of what's coming, and enjoy the freedom of no helmet and the "air in the hair". Then, a Dr. convinced me to try this WaveCell because it is high-tech, promotes that airy feeling AND the only thing Dr's can't fix is your brain! I also got a bright green one. What the heck, I don't have to look at it..... In a matter of days I have come to embrace my new helmet. The doc was spot on! Hopefully it won't save my life (that would mean I was in an accident), but it just might!
Save me from serious injuries, no concussion
The purpose of the helmet was for safety. It did just that. When oncoming rider ran into me ,knocked me off my bike, and wound up hitting my head on some railroad tracks. The helmet was cracked on the exterior, the wave cell stayed intact and protect in my head. Wound up with a chipped vertebrae but no head injuries. I am a very lucky guy. I’m thankful to REI, because there was a gentleman on the one 800 number, that told me about this wave cell technology. Wound up with a minor injury. Thank you this type of helmet is a must or something similar
Great helmet for big heads like me!
So I purchased this pretty much exclusively because it was the only bike helmet that fits my big head. My fitted ball cap size is 7 3/4 to 7 7/8 and prior helmets felt tight. This XL helmet @ 23.6 to 26 cm Is quite comfortable, I’m pleased with my purchase and while neon green isn’t as cool as white or black, it’s all about being seen and hopefully not getting squished like a bug by the growing number of distracted drivers out there. Ordering and delivery was fast and easy. Thanks REI for providing this X-Large helmet for us big headed riders!
That’s one bad hat Harry
I wound up returning this helmet because it was not comfortable and other brands felt better on my head. But the helmet is well made if it fits your head it will be perfect for you XL should fit 60-66 cm ( that’s 23.62 - 25.98 inches ). I wear a size 8 hat (63-64cm) and this feels a little snug on my ancient alien shaped head. There is room to adjust fit and straps, BUT the hard shell isn’t quite the right shape to fit comfortably. I just wish that I could squeeze the hard shell into more of an oval shape and then it would be perfect but this gave me a headache.
