Had one of these for a couple of months before taking it back to the shop I bought it from. It turns out the fabric and white print don't do well together and the print starts to peel off. In the end I had my tent full of these small white flakes, which is "pretty" annoying. Decided to give this sleeping bag another go before my final judgement though, just to rule out the possible chance of a poor individual I got in the first place. So, I got another one which I've now had a month. Two hiking trips in a dry late summer/autumn weather and the same problem already takes place.
I've used this on a few camping trips now between last year and this year, and I absolutely love it. It's quick drying when it gets minimally wet (tent condensation / spilled water, etc). Keeps me super snug and toasty at night. (Haven't used it below 40°F yet, and always sleep with good base layers + socks + hat, and gloves if it's really cold). And it's super compact and light, great for backpacking. I'm 5'3" and the short size is roomy and still a bit long on me, which I don't mind at all. Definitely recommend.
Although I haven't used this sleeping bag yet, it seems to be of exceptional quality. It is extremely lightweight and it came with the stuff-sack and an additional large bag for storage and breathability. The zipper is very well made so it doesn't catch on the fabric. I like how the head portion has extra padding to give support. It seems to be incredibly warm (although I haven't thoroughly tested it yet). The only add-on that might be nice is a built in pocket to keep glasses or a phone or little things you want to keep close. I like the colors so much more than I thought I would. I can't wait to adventure with this bag!
This is my 3rd Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag. I have a Ratio 15F/-9C I purchased about 6yrs ago which is still great. I purchased this bag so I could bring more than one kid with me on backpacking trips. I've used it 2x this season and its worked out great. We just did a couple nights up in Tahoe National Forest in the Island Lake area. Temps came down on the second night, but felt perfect in this bag. Some friends got cold, but this bag was great.
Warm with a lot of loft to the down. In alpine conditions I usually find myself sleeping with most of layers on still when I am in a bag but this one kept me warm through snowy nights and snug in storms without the need for any extra layers. It is very comfortable with nice cushioning in the hood and a very roomy foot box. My favorite bag I have ever used in cold mountain conditions.
Dialed In. Mtn Hardware bags always seem to work the best for me. Sold a 20 synthetic for this new model and couldn't be happier. All the small details I expect, but the zipper is a great improvement along with the fantastic Ghost Whisperer fabric. THE NECK BAFFLE alone is worth the purchase of this bag. Compresses in my Hyperlite 3400 horizontally on the bottom like a pod sack. Used an OR down beanie with merino neck gaiter along with Minus 33 top/tights and Vampire socks on a 4.1R pad and took it down in the single digits toasty! FULL Zipper allows quilt like conversion on warmer nights.
So far this season (summer) I've used this bag a dozen times and I'm more than pleased with it! This is my first light/UL sleeping bag so although i'm not too hard to impress I feel MHW knocked it out of the park. The weight and warmth exceeded my expectations considering the reviews I found said it's not the lightest or the warmest. I'm a "hot sleeper" so this was me cozy all the way down to 30 degrees. In the next few months I'll check back in to report how it does during fall. One last thing: the 'long length' (for a taller guy) and ease of use for the zippers have me super stoked!
I have -40F and 0F Phantom bags. This one is extremely light, but I would say slightly chill for 30F. Use dryer on low temp every time after a trip with tennis balls to make sure down is airy and evenly distributed (but don't really see a need with lower degree bags) - still feels like in feet area down is unequally distributed after keeping it in compression bad for 1-2 days of trip. Also good for slim\athletic people but would be tight if you are on bigger side. Plus - would love to have Goretex option for all Phantoms - for PNW bivy nights.
Got the perfect shakedown of this bag in the low 20s recently and it performed exactly as advertised. It got a bit damp in the evening (don't ask) and I slept with damp ski boot liners and gloves, and was still warm all night. The dimensions seem accurate, which is to say a wee bit crowded sleeping with a bunch of gear, but it's not expedition cut, and this is what helps make it super light. Packs down super small with a quality included compression sack. Hits the mark for light, warm, and high quality.
During the summers I sleep in a small cabin/tent structure at 8000 feet, and this bag has been my number one every single night since I started using it two months ago. I have never been cold and the material is so soft and doesn't bother my skin. The zipper doesn't get caught and the down doesn't pile up inside the baffles. For when I sleep out, it packs down super easily and is so light I barely think about it when choosing what to pack. Amazing piece of gear for sure.
