Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

Warm but heavy and bulky

I've taken the Lamina 0° on about a dozen winter backpacking trips over the past decade, so I've spent around 40 below freezing nights in it. The lowest known temperature I've used it was 8° F. Most times I slept warmly in only baselayers, but this year in the Smoky Mountains I needed to wear a fleece layer to stay comfortably warm. Temperatures were in the low teens to upper single digits. It's a synthetic bag, so I suspect repeated compression has reduced the loft of the insulation. I wouldn't necessarily discourage someone from purchasing this bag, especially if they're on a tight budget. However, there are a number of drawbacks to consider. The bag is cumbersome even when cinched down in a compression sack. This bag takes up a substantial amount of room in my pack. Also the zipper often snags when trying to close it up. The bag will keep you warm when it's cold, but be prepared to spend a lot time trying to compress it down to a reasonable size, and know that eventually it will lose some of its insulating ability.

Warm bag, weird color

Very warm for winter car camping. My main complaint is the color. It’s a bit intrusive.
