I purchased this shoe to replace an older pair of Teva Arrowhead hiking shoes (also purchased from REI). Pros: - the soles grip very well; I’d feel confident on rugged terrain in these - fits my feet like a glove (I have average width feet); I went with the European sizing (I’m usually a 37), and it’s spot on - laces are on the long side for me, but it allows for you to double knot them and still have good length - comfortable foot bed - construction looks and feels solid - the Freezing Fog/Petikor color is accurate to the website image and it looks great! Cons: I can’t really say there are cons to these shoes, but here are some things to note: - it took me about 1/2 mile to break in - the shoe is more stiff than the Teva Arrowheads I had; stiffness feels more like a boot - for people with wider feet, these may not be the shoes for you Overall, I’m happy with my purchase!
I purchased these shoes for a trip to Ireland. I got them about a month ahead to break them in before doing all my hiking while in Ireland. I wore them out on a short hike in NY after about 2 weeks of walking wear and they did great! The grip over rocks and loose gravel was excellent! I've worn tennis/running shoes on the same walk and slid all over in them , so I was pleasantly surprised at how well these shoes gripped with NO sliding at all! The only con I have is that the back of the shoe where it meets my heel/ankle is a bit stiff and rubbed my foot some. It was not so bad as to make a blister, just a little tender.
I bought this a couple weeks ago and initiated my return process the day I got them. Very uncomfortable for my feet (my feet are slim, so I usually like shoes that are thick and soft from the inside to fill the shape of my feet).
I wanted to like this shoe so badly, but they just hurt my feet. I saw this shoe as a multifunctional backpacking shoe. Unfortunately, after 2 months climbing and hiking through Europe, they STILL hurt my feet. They have awesome grip for rocky terrain and hold up for easy-moderate climbing. In theory, this was perfect for alpine terrain, but the hikes were hard to tolerate. The shoe is too stiff. Hard to enjoy the outdoors when you just want to take your shoes off the whole time. Salomon takes the cake for multifunctional hiking/running/climbing shoes.
I am not an Arcteryx fan girl. I take great care to match a barnd's marketing hyperbole with my not inconsiderable experience with reality. The Konseal shoes represents real value for me and runs a very close second to my Hanwag Robins and Makalus in both fit and feel while moving and superior to my 5.10 Tennies and Vasques in most respects including warranty. Whether walking along trails, hiking alpine approaches, scrambling across cemented scree or friction climbing slabs, the Konseals do these things well for me. I am actually buying a second pair (no fooling) before Arcteryx decides to 'improve' these shoes for any reason. (Sadly, they've reduced a number of products from 'great' to 'meh' status over the last few years in my opinion.)
There is a lot I love about this shoe. Snug, trim fit, wonderfully light, excellent durability and tread. However the upper's rather ruin it. Where the tongue/lace eyelets converge there is a series of pressure points. The most notable being directly where the toes creases to flex the foot. This makes climbing/ scrambling uncomfortable as you go to push off. Everything else is basically perfect (very well done Arcteryx!) but due to the level of discomfort across the top of my 1st toe, it wouldn't be my first choice to approach in.
Hello there, Thank you for providing your feedback. Many individuals throughout the company read these reviews, and changes are sometimes made to products as a result, so we appreciate when our customers take the time to let us know what they think. We will also forward your review to the footwear designers. Kindly,
I ordered a size smaller than I would usually wear & they were still very long in the toe. I usually wear a 9.5 The size 8 wound up fitting. I would have gotten the right size if I had used the EU sizing - I wear a 40 which usually corresponds w/ 9.5 with this brand EU40=USA8 Unfortunately, I wound up returning even the ones that fit because they were uncomfortable. The Tongue is long, & was jabbing me in the (what do you call the front of the ankle?) when walking down stairs in my house. I can't imagine how that would feel going downhill on a hike? Plus, I have a bunion on 1 foot, & the narrow toe area was causing it to flare up because it pushes the big toe towards the others. I found myself really wanting to take them off while trying them out around the house.
I love how these shoes look and feel when I'm just wearing them. I want to love them completely but when walking, the stiff upper folds and pushes down on my foot by my pinky and 4th toes. Maybe this will break in with more use, but I'm unsure. I'll keep wearing them for a while but no long approaches because it is quite uncomfortable. Without this problem though, they'd be an easy five stars! Maybe the next version won't have that issue. Fit true to size and otherwise awesome.
I work in the outdoor sector and do a lot of field work/ hiking. Unfortunately I have had a terrible experience with this shoe. I find them so uncomfortable that I am unable to wear them- they have no arch support and bunch up just above the toe box. At the end of the day my back hurt, and I almost had a blister of the top of my foot! No help from Arc'teryx either, as they claim it was a "fit," issue.
Hello There, Thank you for reaching out to Arc'teryx and sharing your feedback on the Konseal FL Shoe. We're sorry to hear the size and fit of the Konseal FL Shoe did not meet your expectations. The Konseal FL Shoe has been designed for fast and light approaches with a precise fit. Given the minimal design and support offered as a fast and light shoe, these may not be appropriate for all foot types, and something like the Konseal AR which has been designed to handle heavier demands may be more appropriate. We appreciate your comments none the less as they will help drive design in the areas where our customers need it most. If you have any other comments or concerns, we'd love to hear from you and encourage you to contact our Customer Service Department at 1-866-458-2473 (available Monday-Friday 9:00 AM- 4:00 PM PST) or fill out a Contact Us Form. All the best.
I love these. They are well padded, and were comfortable for me straight out of the box. I love the padded tongue, but have found it too long for my narrow, bony feet and it can cause pressure on the top of the foot. However, changing the way I lace them up has resolved this. Thank you, Arcteryx, for making shoes to fit narrow feet. Your shoes are the only ones that fit me.
