I've been loving the original Vertex highs for years, and was SO excited to try these when they hit the store. After rocking the Sylan pros (daily drivers for trails) and Norvan LD 4's for a few months, I knew these would take the cake for long alpine runs. From scrambling, navigating rock fields, to sliding down scree, moving quickly in the mountains is pure joy in these. They're nimble, lightweight, durable and super comfortable. It took me a while to figure out which size to get, and ultimately opted for the 8.5, which is what I normally wear, and have historically worn in Arc's running shoes. I have always removed the inner footbed and replaced with superfeet for added arch support. So the fit issue that some others may encounter wasn't really a problem for me. I originally tried the 8's, and took them on some big long runs. But missed my liners and extra ankle boost as a life-long over-pronator. The LiteBase is very thin. Which is great for a low drop feel, but these are still supportive enough for tromping down the trails after your summit. I've only put 40 miles on these so far, with almost 14k of climbing/descending. So looking forward to more days with these in the mountains!
Everything you want without the sacrifices you'd normally have to make. A shoe that runs, scrambles, and allows you to push limits while having your back. Excellent traction, holds the foot in place nicely, and keeps debris out.
These are awesome! I wore them for a very steep hike (1,000 ft/mile) and they felt so grippy on rocks and scree, and yet soooo lightweight with just enough cushioning. Excited to run in these but plan on making these my go-to backpacking shoe this summer. They also look sooo cool—I got several compliments, which is so rare for a trail sneaker! 10/10!!! (FYI, these ran true to size for me. I'm usually an 8.5 but often a 9 in running/trail shoes (Altra Lone Peaks, Nike, etc.) but took these in a 8.5 and they had just enough room without being too big.
The vertex speed remains my favourite alpine runner. It performs well on snow and rock, and can handle the approach trails as a runner. The grip on the sole provides confidence on slab, and the edges are stiff enough to help with scrambling. The stiff edges also help with snow travel for kicking steps. This shoe does fit a little more narrow than the Norvan line, and I sized 1/2 size down from the 2023 version of this shoe.
