Nice Day Tripper
The Pungo is easy to paddle, seems fast and tracks straight. A little tippier due to the hull shape as compared to my Wilderness Tarpon but I haven't had any problems. The adjustable foot pegs and knee braces allow you "lock in" to the kayak. I like the adjustable seat especially being able to lift the front edge to support my thighs. Since it is a sit inside I needed to buy a bow floatation bag, pump and paddle float.
Cuts through still water like a knife!
I bought this kayak after months of research and was not disappointed. I took it out for a spin on a warm fall day and didn't want to get out of it. Shout out to the staff at REI for educating me on how to mount my kayak to my roof rack and ensure that it was secure.
A great all-around kayak
Durable, well-made 12' kayak. Glides in lakes, responsive in rivers, this boat makes me smile. Large cockpit makes getting in and out easy. Also, the dog loves sitting up front and being captain. The detachable console is useful, at times, but usually the dog goes and the console stays home. It's a bit heavy, but the handles are great. Nice storage options; almost water tight. Also really like that the skid plate is replaceable, as it takes abuse taking out and putting in. The seat is super comfy. Foot pegs are easily adjusted while in boat allowing me to get a locked in cockpit experience. The seat had a problem when new, which wilderness systems responded by promptly sending out a replacement.
Wilderness Systems Pungo 120
I love this Kayak. I'm 6'-4" and 230 lbs and probably could have gone for the 125 but this kayak fits me well. Easy to paddle and very stable with great tracking. The REI staff in Santa Barbara were great to work with. Very engaging and helpful.
Don't do it
Don't do it. Bought a Pungo new 5/1/2021 used 20-25 times and have worn thru the hull as of 6/11/2022. The high spot on the hull right under the seat is a terrible design, not to mention the void in the hull right behind it under the seat. I’ve used it @ 20-25 times in rivers and lakes to have this high spot sanded thru in such a short amount of time is really leaving a bad taste in my mouth when I though I was buying a quality product. Is this what passes for a 1st quality build? Not to mention they did not stand behind the warranty. It is ridiculous …I got 2 more years out of my baseline Pelican than something that cost 4x as much.
Best Novice Kayak
I hadn't been kayaking in 20+ years but decided I wanted to get back into it. Lots of research, took a beginner's kayak class to refresh my skills. Started looking locally for a good kayak, found the Pungo 120 at REI. Asked my instructor if that was a good kayak, he said it is the best on on the market for a novice! It also made the Top 5 Kayaks for 2021 by one of the paddling magazines. I am very happy with it, very stable, tracks well, fast, not too heavy, and the dashboard is very convenient. I mounted a GPS on it.
Smooth tracking
I am 62 years old, 5’2”, 200lb woman. This kayak is great. Getting it on top of my SUV was more than I could do, so I bought a trailer. I take this everywhere. i can fit a small cooler below my feet and picnic in the middle of the lake. There is even room for my 4 yr old grandson with plenty of room to paddle. Whether for an afternoon or all day, this is great.
All was great until I pulled it out of the water
Bought this kayak recently and got it out for the first time. Paddled up some slow moving water around a lake and back down again. To be clear, I love the ride. Great glide paddling up current. Super stable and easy to maneuver. The seat and thigh padding are well designed and comfortable. I really like the integrated handles and replaceable stern tip where they kayak will wear over time. After the trip, I was very disappointed to find more water in the Orbix stern hatch than what I had at my feet. So much for keeping things dry! I inspected the seal, and I was able to run my finger along the bottom of the cockpit right into the hatch. It wasn't sealed! Very disappointing as I had high expectations for quality. I'm hoping I can easily get it repaired or replaced, as I intend to keep the boat otherwise.
Best boat I’ve ever owned
I would buy this boat over again in a heartbeat. I paddle mainly slow moving rivers and lakes. Very stable and tracks well. Enough room to have my 40lbs dog who paces up front. Highly recommend.
Leaks!!
Disappointed in this recent purchase of a Wilderness 12ft Pungo. Its actually an exchange because the 1st kayak leaked severly in the hatch, which is supposed to be a dry hatch, and at the bulkhead in the cockpit. So i ordered a replacement... which also has the exact same severe leaks in the "dry" hatch and cockpit. Rather than have to schlepp a 2nd kayak back to REI, who didnt offer any recompense or discount, i contacted Wilderness who said the manufacturing defects were probably due to "being banged around in shipping" and "human error" in the way of shoddy application of sealant/epoxy. Their solution was to send me tubes of epoxy and for me to re-seal the bulkhead and hatch. Gee thanks Wilderness! I own other kayaks from this brand bought years ago, which have been great vessels. Seems like the cliche "dont make it like they used to" applies to every product/industry these days. Very sad.
