Shoes fit similar to prior Cascadia models. Toe box space wide enough to accommodate my average width feet even with the addition of an orthotic. Tread versatile enough to be comfortable on paved surface or uneven trail. Foot felt stable on wet trail. Cushioning good and forefoot flexibility good on average single track trail. I have not tried these on predominately rocky train. Only con was that the tread has started to separate from the toe of the shoe. This is the reason that I rated a 4.
I chose these shoes because the reviews said they had a good non-slip sole and my biggest fear is slipping and hitting my head. I've used them on dry, rugged, rocky terrain and I didn't feel the bumpy rocks through the soles. Today we were trail running with many stream crossings with wet stepping stones and I'm pleased to say these shoes gripped well. They have the feel of a lightweight running shoe but with all the sturdiness you need for rocky, rugged terrain, or just for regular softer trails. They fit nicely around the heel and have lots of room in the toe box. I have a narrow foot and they fit me well, but I also would expect there's plenty of room for a wider foot.too.
I'm a huge Brooks fan, and ordered the same size as my road shoes, but the shoes felt just a bit large and I had some sliding issues on steep descents. Other than that, the shoes were wonderful on all types of trail (single track, rocky, transitional paths.) I love the dual holders for the laces on the inside and the laces are solid and don't loosen, even with rain. I highly recommend the shoes, but consider sizing down if you're on the fence on sizes.
Love, love, LOVE these shoes. With relatively wide feet, I’ve always had difficulty finding a shoe with a wide enough toe box. I’ve tried two other pairs of shoes prior to the Cascadia’s, and both shoes left my toes numb after only 3 miles in. I wore Brooks Ghost as a street shoe before and loved them. I decided to give the Cascadias a try and am so happy I did. The toe box is wide enough to accommodate all feet, the tread on the bottom is perfect for the trails I run, I love the shoelace tuck in feature on the tongue on the shoe so I never worry about my laces coming on undone and all around, just a great looking shoe (which can be hard to find in the running community at times). I will continue to buy each subsequent Cascadia generation until they stop producing them!
This is my 3rd pair of Brooks Cascadias. I've worn out two other pairs putting in hundreds of miles of mostly unpaved terrain. They're great if you travel a lot and plan on running, hiking, or just spending all day walking when you get to your destination. Especially on mixed surfaces. I ran yesterday in melting ice and mushy snow in Chicago and felt great!. This edition is a great upgrade, as it has a better buffer from accidental splashes with the mesh being higher up, and the tongue is connected, which is great for folks who get chaffing on the top of their foot from the tongue moving around. If that wasn't enough, they donate some of the proceeds to our nations greatest trails! I'll be back for another pair once I wear through these.
The Cascadias performed really well on very technical trails. The shoe has the right combo of a supportive and sturdy sole but without being too heavy or stiff. The lug grip is amazing! My foot felt securely in place in the shoe and stepping on all sorts of trail terrain. I felt in control of my stride instead of slipping and sliding everywhere. None of the trails I ran on were wet but I imagine these would still have stable traction and the mesh upper would drain water well. I also liked the mud guard on the upper as it saved my feet from getting stabbed by sticks and rocks several times. I was really impressed my ankles and feet didn't start hurting after a couple of miles - this shoe definitely provides a lot of support and helps keep you stable so you're not using all of your stabilizing muscles the whole time. A few other handy details I liked were the shoe tongue tab that you can tuck the laces up into and the loop on the heels to clip your shoes together or onto your bag with a carabiner clip. Overall a very smart design that makes technical trail more comfortable. I've run trails with road shoes before and know the pain well. A great trail shoe like this one eliminates a lot of unnecessary running pains. Would also be great for hiking when you don't want to wear a heavy and hot boot. I would def buy another pair.
The Cascadia 13 PCT running shoe provided more side-to-side support than other shoes I've used. However, I didn't feel like it offered much cushioning in the insole. Typically when I wear new shoes I have the satisfaction of remembering what a shoe is supposed to feel like - arch support, cushiony, comfortable - because an older shoe's insole usually wears out. Upon first wear of the Cascadia I didn't feel this sensation. Nevertheless, after wearing the shoe 10 times, my feet never ached and offered plenty of side support. I have a medium foot width and the extra side support could either be an intentional design of the shoe or the result of my foot's width pressing outward. I think it's the former because I was never in pain. The side-sturdiness made me feel more secure as I ran over roots and rocks. It felt more like a hiking boot without the weight. The shoe was also very flexible. I used to run with more minmalist-style shoes and these felt similar, except with the Cascadia 13 PCT I didn't feel as many rocks on my feet! A great feature of the shoe is the pouch on the tongue of the shoe where you can stash your laces. This may seem like an unnecessary feature to some, but the feeling of laces bouncing around while running always drives me crazy. I either feel as though they are coming lose or they keep hitting my foot/ankle. This subtle feature made my running experience more enjoyable. I usually wear a 9.5 women's shoe and this shoe fit true to size.
These shoes are perfect for the trail. The soles are light but dense, with impressive tread. Not for road running though! These shoes are very breathable and light, though a little narrow in shape. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to start trail running with a bit of rocky terrain.
I usually shy away from trail running shoes due to fear of thick, heavy, rigid sole. But these shoes were relatively lightweight, flexible and comfortable!
The shoes fit well with no hot spots after a four hour hike. The fabric allowed a decent amount of breathability and stretch to accommodate normal foot swelling and they dried out overnight. The extra holes for re-lacing to keep my heels towards the back of shoe are always appreciated.
