Its not the best thing to use for cooking but if you run out of propane in the stove it will definitely save you. Very easy to start up a fire inside because it protected from the wind and you need to add more sticks very often because it burn fast and its pretty small fire. But overall it doing a good job.
When I got this stove it was the original gen1 stove since the. They have come out with a Gen2 stove that has a hole drilled in the bottom plate of the burn chamber so you can use a standard backpacking isobutane burner and cartridge tank. It can work with hexamine tabs, fatwood sticks regular twigs and sticks found outdoors or along the trail along with smaller alcohol stove that are less than 2.5” in diameter. I have not used it with alcohol but have tried it with all others. To boil water in a timely fashion you’ll want a windscreen and probably two fuel tabs to be honest. I utilize a fire-started like a zip cube, light my fire cotton balls or even hexamine pieces to get the fore started with twigs. It does smoke a lot with the pot on but if you got the fire going strong before putting the pot on and keep feeding the fire it will boils water FAST. The added woodsmoke adds some great flavor if you’re cooking a steak or something similar and you happen upon some hickory or mesquite wood. Along the trail The iso-butane option is really great when you are just trying to get started in the morning with some hot coffee. I’ve also known some guys to carry some charcoal briquettes with them on the trail in preparation for a tasty steak on the first night in. And then they use gathered deadwood for the duration of the trip. Its heavier And bulkier than most other woodstoves it competes with but I Really think its the most versatile by way of fuel choice than pretty much any other competition it has. This company got started with a kickstarter campaign and I personally have conversed back and forth with their president. Everyone that works for them are outdoor oriented people and use the stove thats why they made a Gen2 after gen 1 and are planning a gen 3 that might have adaptations for larger alcohol stoves. My gen1 wasnt outfitted with the necessary hole for the isobutane burner they now offered on the gen2 stoves and they have resources online on how to modify your gen 1 so that you can purchase the isobutane burner and use it with your modified gen1. Great stove, grest company, grest customer support. Buy with confidence.
