Absolutely gorgeous jacket and the fit for me was perfect. Colors are stunning. But used this for a fall hike in light rain yesterday which became a heavier downpour and this jacket did NOT keep me dry. If temps were colder I would have had hypothermia. This is going back.
Purchased this jacket for a trip to Alaska. Fortunately the day before we left, we had a heavy rain here in Southern California and I went for a walk to test the jacket. Returned home soaked through! Jacket went back to the store and they said it appeared that the seams in the arms have failed. Based on several other reviews, it seems that this is pretty typical for this jacket. AVOID if you want to stay dry!
This is my first new rain coat in almost a decade. I was a tried and true Mt. Hardwear rain coat customer until I saw this one in the REI store. Super light weight, awesome colors and the price was right (on sale). The hood fits snug and it repels water while not feeling sweaty inside. My only complaint is the zipper is sometimes hard to zip up smoothly.
The colors are what hooked me on this jacket, paired with the fact that it's also Gore-tex. I will be returning this jacket. Any bit of dirt shoes on this jacket. And although the fabric is soft and comfortable, water doesn't necessarily repel off of it, but rather soaks in and you can see that the jacket is visibly soaked -- but it does keep you dry. Just overall, not satisfied for the price I paid.
Purchased this jacket in Dec 2018, and just returned it. The jacket does hold up to wind and cold weather, it’s comfortable and I appreciate the inside breast pocket. On a recent hike, the rain soaked through, had rain puddles in the pockets. Maybe ideal for commuting, but I wouldn’t recommend for hiking.
Very sad to return this jacket but people need to know that this jacket is NOT waterproof. I am very dissapointed in GORTEX, Mamuut and REI for putting out a jacket as "waterproof" when this one is anything but. I purchased this jacket from REI in fall of 2018, I LOVED the colors and fit. It started out as slightly water resistant bit I quickly noticed it was soaking through the first layer with even mild showers. I tried wasing and treating it with NikWax (another $20 purchase) as suggested by numerous REI sales persons, I will be returning the NikWax as well because it didnt even help a little bit with water repellancy, which was super dissapointing because everyone hyped it up and said it would fix the problem, I truly wish it had. Honestly I dont even know what jacket to buy to replace this one. I have zero faith in GORTEX now, the REI jackets have horrible colors this year, I no longer trust Mamuut to advertise honestly and the more I research this issue the more I am realizing that many of the brands even Arcteryx are now manufacturing in places like China. ..so remind me again why people are paying $140 - $400 for these "rain" jackets? There needs to be a recall on products like this but instead REI is making money by pushing products like NikWax. How about the next time you sell someone a "waterproof" jacket and it isn't waterproof you suggest the person return it immediately and send it back to the manufacturer so that they don't keep getting rewarded by lying to consumers. This is a very common problem and it shows where the ethics of companies like REI truly lie. You know what's waterproof, affordable and made in the USA.. A heavyduty Glad trash bag.
Love the colors, fits great and so far has held up to light rain, though I have not tried it in a downpour. Hood fits perfectly, unlike some other jackets where the hood might sit low and block vision. I love the inside pocket, as well as the two large pockets on the outside. Other pros: Sleeve length, velcro on wrist cuffs, waist drawstring, gortex, breathability and a warmer rain jacket than other light weight jackets I have owned.
As much as I want to love this jacket, because the color and the fit are excellent, it fails at its primary function of being waterproof. I will have to take it back to REI.
I love my rain jacket. I like how it's breathable. I pair it up with sweater / puffy / as an outer that I wear when I go for a run. Does a good job on breaking wind.
Took this to soggy New Zealand right away and while we got stuck for an extra day due to excess rainfall, that washed out our trail, I stayed dry in this new jacket and the REI rain pants too! Perfect buy!
