Just back from some very challenging hikes in Utah and Colorado. My husband and I were both wearing new Moab boots. These boots are terrific. They gripped sliprock like we had super powers and our mantra became “trust your boots” when we were on steep, dicey spots. From comfort to style to safety we highly recommend these awesome boots. Thanks Merrill for a great product!
Comfortable and ventilated, hiked the complete AT with them and parts of Florida Trail. Hiking or not this is what I wear
I am a 59 year old avid hiker who has taken 3-4 hiking trips each year for the last 10 years or so. Have day hiked in all of the major parks and have done all of the major hikes. Most of what we do is in the 7-12 mile range but at least one hike per trip is 18-25 miles. The terrain that we hike is mainly alpine but we’ve hiked a lot in Utah, as well. In addition, I begin my hiking “training” in late February or early March and will work up to about 15-20 miles on Saturday of each week. I mention all of this so that reviewers will know what my experience and expectations are for my hiking shoes. Since I have a wide foot, the Moab Ventilators were one of the first shoes that I tried and I’ve never looked back. They have served me very well in all types or terrain and weather conditions. I’ve never had a problem with them and typically go through about 3 pair a year. I wouldn’t wear anything else. This past summer I chose to wear the Ventilators exclusively in alpine conditions and had a great experience. My son and I thru-hiked the Enchantments and did the Sahale Arm glacier camp hike. The Ventilators provided plenty of support and held up well. No problems and no blisters. I recommend this product highly!
I've been wearing Merrell's for many years on hikes all over the world, and purchased these shoes to hike the High Sierra Trail. Took them for a two day test-run out of the box, got a blister on day one. Returned for a size larger, broke them in 50 miles rucking around the neighborhood and local trails, then hit the High Sierra Trail in early June. These shoes butchered my feet. End of the first day I had a blister. I tried everything to make these shoes work: 5 toe socks, darn tough smart wool socks, mole skin, foot cream... by day three I had 6 mean blisters. Worst experience with Merrell hiking shoes / boots ever, made a beautiful trip extremely painful. So why two stars instead of one? These shoes held up very well, through punishing terrain: rocks, snow, rivers, ice. But if they shred your feet instead of protecting them, mission failure. This may be the end of my relationship with Merrell. Extremely disappointed!
I wear my 2nd pair of Merrell Men's Moab 2 Ventilator (Wide Width) on a daily basis. I walked over 3000 miles in less than 2 years wearing my 1st pair. In the last few months I acquired my 3rd pair... I like them that much, however my 3rd pair, still brand new and in the box shall remain so until my 2nd pair wears out. That may be awhile. I cannot possibly reduce my review to a five word one-liner and have you understand why I believe what I think about these shoes, accordingly, I make no apologies about the length of my review because I have so enjoyed and appreciate what's being reviewed. About 40 years ago I was employed by a worldwide footwear manufacturer, working at its local production plant in the product development department, where, as a footwear stylist and technical designer, I became acquainted with just about every type of shoe and boot style one could imagine. More common and popular styles included CVO (circular vamp overlay), Gibson, Lace To Toe, Pumps and the style upon which Moab 2 Ventilator is fashioned, called U Throat. Why U Throat? Because when you look at such a shoe from the front, the opening which provides adjustability to accommodate a wide range of the same sized foot is in the shape of the letter U. Despite my knowledge of footwear, years later there was still more for me to learn and I did so with my 1st pair of shoes from Merrell. I've included 5 photos, each numbered for easy identification to illustrate what I learned. Walnut is the color of my 1st pair with Beluga the 2nd, explaining why the colors don't match in the side by side photos. I suppose most manufacturers would prefer to see pictures which put their product in a good light which is why I hesitated to include Photos 4 and 5, showing how the toe cap / mud guard of my 1st pair became warped and split. Look closely at Photo 5, the mesh above the split has torn as well. Understand this image does NOT depict a product that has failed or worn out, but rather depicts how I damaged my 1st pair of Moab 2 Ventilators. Have a look at Photos 1 - 4 to compare how repeated upward lace tugging changed the size of the U Throat opening and its shape, so much so that the toe cap / mud guard permanently buckled and warped. Also note the difference between the lace in Photo 3 and Photo 4. One is relaxed and loose while the other is tight and taut. By not relaxing the lace at the throat base of my 1st pair I effectively removed width from across the toes of my Wide Width Ventilators and in time, that created friction against my foot, stressing the materials literally to the breaking point. I average no less than 3.5 miles a day walking for fitness on a local Trail so it would have been easy enough to go looking for a different style of shoe, perhaps one made by a different manufacturer to replace my 1st pair of Ventilators given how they broke down and wore through... but I'm glad I didn't, after all, repeat business is how a company builds its reputation to the good, isn't it? I may have never learned what I discovered had I switched to another brand and in the process, walked away from a really great product (pun noted). When first time customers don't return you have to wonder why. Price? Quality? Value for the money? Truth be told, 'value for the money' is price and quality rolled into one, isn't it? This little discovery I made about lace relaxation made all the difference and made me a repeat Merrell customer which is why I believe the Company will have no problem publishing my rather long and visual review. Long story short, from the moment I put on my 1st pair of Merrell Moab 2 Ventilators, even before I laced them up they just felt right. Effortless to walk in, obviously comfortable to wear, they keep my feet dry and given the number of miles I got out of my 1st pair they are well worth the money. That's my story. I learned my lesson and now routinely loosen lace tension at the base of both shoe's throat openings so that the same thing doesn't happen to my current pair. And like I said, I have another pair ready to go when the ones I'm wearing eventually wear out... but that probably will be when this pair has more than 3000 miles on them.
Thank you for your review and for being a fan of Merrell!
I've worn these shoes for years, but I've now had several pairs that have fallen apart prematurely. I lose chunks off the sole after maybe 500 miles of use. I am hiking in areas that have hot rocky areas, but I don't think that should lead to failure this quickly. The shoes also come untied often, which is kind of weird. They're otherwise comfortable but I'm moving on to something else.
Took these on a hike to the top of Half Dome with my dad a couple weeks ago! It was brutal but these shoes were amazing, especially on the slick rock going up the cables.
They took me through the Black Hills without a bruise, blister or sprain. They, and the Black Hills, were magnificent.
This is my second pair of Moab 2's and I LOVE them! I tried to go with another hike shoe offered by REI but it just was not the same. (Thanks to the GREAT REI Return Policy I was able to return that pair 48 hours later!) My feet "knew" that these were the right shoes as soon as I put them on. My first pair lasted me just over 2 years and I wore them in all kinds of conditions. The tread/soles holds up very well but the cloth interior at the heel wore out from my socks when putting them on and taking them off. KUDDOS to Merrell on strong shoelaces! I only had to replace them once and the replacement pair was "okay" in comparison. Overall? A great shoe! Highly recommend getting a pair!
I purchased Moab hiking shoes as they were comfortable right out of the box and fit my foot like a glove. They seem well constructed. The Vibram soles are tough and super effective traction. Unfortunately, the lining material is not durable, fragile in my opinion. I wore holes right through the heel areas after a few months of use. The rest of the shoes (see photos) would be good for years but the lining failure has this pair heading for the trash.
