Refillable propane cylinder
I bought a refillable propane kit and an extra cylinder for a BWCA trip. The bottles are not filled and I had to also buy a 20 lb propane tank to fill them. I assembled the system and was unsuccessful in filling a bottle. The propane kept escaping from the fill adapter valve. I emailed Flame King and they responded with a fix; tighten the bottom screw on the adapter valve. Problem solved and both bottles filled easily. Both bottles weighed (minus bottle weight) .9 lb. Our trip consisted of six nights camping and we never ran out of gas. It will take a while to recoup the investment but I don't have to throw away any more tanks.
2 out of 4 failed
I bought the refill kit and 2 more cylinders from local REI (I labeled them 1-3). 1 cylinders leak from the main valve after the 2nd refill. I could hear the hissing sound after removed them from the refill kit . Other cylinders hold very well, no leak after 5 refill cycles, which indicates that I did not do anything wrong. I returned the leaky cylinder, REI is very nice to exchanged it. Now one of the original cylinder leaks. The main valve did not completely shut. It is clearly something wrong with the quality of these cylinders. Im tired of taking them back to REI. If these things cannot be refilled more than 5 times then what the point of saving.
GOOD PRODUCT
I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR A RELIABLE AND EASY TO USE REFILLABLE 1LB TANK FOR A LONG TIME. I HAVE ALSO PLAYED WITH REFILLING 1LB TANKS THAT ARE NOT MEANT TO REFILL. MOST OF THE NON-REFILLABLE TANKS THAT I HAVE REFILLED, APPROXIMATELY 8, LEAKED EITHER FROM THE CENTER VALVE OR THE PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE. THIS PROVED TO ME THAT REFILLING THEM IS NOT PRACTICAL UNLESS YOU CAP THEM OFF AND USE THEM QUICKLY. THE FLAME KING TANK I PURCHASED FROM REI IS EXCELLENT. EASY TO FILL, EASY TO BLEED OFF TO THE PROPER FILL LEVEL, AND VERY DURABLE. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. I EXPECT TO PURCHASE MORE AS SOON AS MY LOCAL REI HAS THEM IN STOCK. THEY ARE A MUCH BETTER WAY TO GO THAN THE NON REFILLABLE AND VERY EXPENSIVE TANKS YOU SEE IN MOST STORES.
Pay close attention to the build date.
I bought the Flame King Refill kit and an extra one of these canisters from my local REI this week. I found the system extremely easy to use and I had both canisters full in just a couple of minutes. I then went to put both canisters into my Big Buddy heater to warm my garage. The first canister fit like a glove but when I went to put the other on, it was too tall. I then removed the first canister and compared them side by side. One has a build date of 9/16 and the other is 2/18. The 9/16 built container is more than 1/2" taller than the other container. It has a tare weight of 1.5lbs where as the 2/18 built tank only has a 1.4lb tare weight. Also the the pressure relief valve appears to be updated and more robust in the newer tank. I don't see this as a huge deal as there is a canister exchange station less than an hour from my house. However if I had known this information before purchasing these 2 tanks. I could have checked the dates and got 2 tanks that fit my heater right from the beginning. Other than this small issue, I am very happy with these tanks so far. I'm sure the taller tanks will fit all of your other stuff just fine but the way the Mr Heater holds the tank inside a little door, it's just slightly too tall to fit correctly.
good but not great.
I have had 3 of these for a couple of years now. They are easy to fill if you read the directions and I have not had any leaks. Yes they come empty and you have to fill them and yes it’s a bit more effort than the throw away cylinders but so what. On a whole they are a better option than the Coleman style cylinders that can not be recycled.
ONE OF THE BEST UPGRADES TO CAMP
I just filled 4 bottles for abuot 5$ instead of buying 4 colemans for 25. Best part I can just refill them again. I found refilling coleman cans unreliable and leaky. I bought the flame king refill kit and its just about the easiest thing ever. Should be a part of anyones festival, car camping, or emergency kit IMHO.
Buy it. You won’t regret it.
Ignore the negative reviews—these are great! I haven’t bought a propane cylinder in almost three years. Yes, of course you need the adapter to fill this from a large propane tank. How else would you fill it, a rubber hose? Come on... FlameKing has a YouTube video to show you how to do it—it’s easy.
Best canister ever.
I have bought 2 of these, love them! Save lots of money , refill yourself and eco friendly not having to throw away disposables to end up in a landfill. The tank does not come filled, filling is easy with their fill up kit or you may even purchase a knock off adapter from eBay. Highly recommend to anyone!
Tanks leak after just a few refills
I bought the refill kit, and a extra tank. After just a couple fills, both tanks are now leaking and will not hold propane.
One out of two bottles failed
I bought a stand-alone bottle and then got one that was included with the fill stand. This is A great concept but needs a little polish. The bleed screw that keeps the bottle from getting overfilled is a micro allen bolt. One of our bottles stripped when we went to open it for a second refill. After that it was unusable. So a 50% failure rate out of two bottles. The other bottle we've refilled at least twice so far without an issue, but with that soft and small of an allen bolt I doubt it will last repeated use.
