Solid and Sticky

I bought a new mountain bike and decided to go with flat pedals. This brand of shoe was recommended to me, so I picked up a pair of the Five Ten Freerider Contact. The shoes fit well right out of the box and you can feel their stiffness--probably not good for long hikes, but comfortable enough for wearing to/from/around the trail. Where these really shine is on the bike. The pins in my flat pedals sink right into the rubber outsole, holding the shoe in place. The solid midsole keeps my feet flat and transfers power straight to the pedal. I used to ride with SPD clip shoes on the trail, but not any more. These shoes give me the grip I need to power through on steep uphills, the connnection I like to fly along more level trails, and I can still move my feet around or bail on a tricky downhill. All around, these shoes are nearly perfect for me. I give them five stars because they live up to what I need and exceeded my expectations. For my personal taste, I would add a strap across the top to secure the laces. But, in reality, I haven't had any problems with them.

Very Disappointed

I wanted to like these shoes so much. Out of the box they felt sturdy and looked sleek. In the store they fit snug but when walking I noticed my feet would push against the toe which is really stiff; I figured that didn't matter because I'm not going to be walking in these I'll be biking... I hopped on a bike in the store and on the pedal they felt like they slid a bit but I figured the store bikes pins were not as spiky as mine... I still gave these shoes a chance. As soon as I hopped on my bike I noticed they wiggled a bit on the pedal and I was constantly trying to reset my foot. I figured I'd get used to this and they'd be "sticky" like everyone talked about. A mile in I was still slipping around, the only time they stayed put was if I used the heel where the dot pattern was, which is an awful way to ride. And, I noticed my toes were starting to hurt because they were shoving up against the stiff toe. I noticed my ankle wasn't as snug as I thought, it was just sloshing around in the back of the shoe. I started to become really irritated and decided to turn back when my toes began to tingle. It was strange, I had no control over the pedal for two reasons; My feet were moving around inside the shoe and the shoe itself would not stay put on the pedal itself. It literally felt like I was trying to ride my bike in a pair of rented ice skates. My cheap Nikes fit better, felt better, had better control over the pedal, and stuck better than these. I'm so disappointed this is considered a top of the line MTB shoe because it literally does the opposite of what I wanted. I wish I hadn't ride so far out in these, I was so irritated I spent the whole ride home constructing this review in my mind.

Great shoe, questionable quality

Really like the shoe. Comfortable and keeps you planted on your pedals as expected. Unfortunately in less than 30 days use, the threading around the sole has come loose. I’m not sure how long it will take for a hole to develop where it is separating, but it is currently still usable. Instead of cutting the thread and potentially making it worse, I’ve just tied it off to the bottom laces and hope that prevents it from unraveling further. Maybe I was harder on them or they caught a rock or something... your experience may vary. Hopefully I’m the only one with this issue.

Quality Issues

I bought these to replace a pair of Asics trail runners. The grip on these shoes was really good almost too good.Unfortunately they didn't last but a month. I finished a ride this past weekend and noticed my right shoe sole had started to separate from the rest of the shoe.Checked the left one same issue. Returned to REI with zero issues and bought the regular Freeriders. They seem to be constructed better and should hopefully have the same level of grip without the sole separation issues. Riding this week and I will post a review If there are any issues.

SUPER GRIP

I bought a new bike with flat pedals so I wanted to try a non clete shoe. These were awkward at first but after a few hours on the trail way more comfortable that I thought. Super grippy sole and easy to clean material. I would buy them again.

Sticky!

Couldn't be happier, for flat pedals these shoes are great! Very sticky! I chose the freerider contact for the vinyl/rubber outer. After a ride just hose off the mud or wipe down with a damp cloth. Super easy cleanup.

These shoes are a must for shreddin down the trail. Freeriders provide a stable and comfortable ride. Beware, these shoes are are like glue, it's like almost like clipping in. :) Sizing seems to be true to my standard tennis shoe.

great but run small

My son is just starting to wear size 12 shoes but when the size 12 of these came, he could barely get it foot inside. REI did not sell any larger sizes so we ordered direct from Five Ten. My son says they stick like glue and he loves them....in size 14. Not sure what we will do when he grows, because size 14 (which fits like a 12) is the largest they make, but he will enjoy them for now.

Great Riding Shoe

I read a bunch of reviews before buying this shoe and wasn’t sure if I wanted it based on the few negative reviews I read. The bad reviews were all about quality and claimed the stitching comes out of the sole in the front and sides. Well I was at the store looking at this shoe and I pulled out the insert and low and behold, there was the end of the stitching that everyone complained about. I did find this odd, the fact that the shoe company didn’t tie off the ends of the stitching and rather used masking tape and simply taped it to the bottom of the inside of the shoe. This is why ppl are having quality issues. You can literally pull out the yellow stitching on the outside sole so after one or two rides, it’s no surprise the stitching is coming apart. SIMPLE FIX! All one needs to do is tie off the stitching and the problem is solved. It is baffling that the shoe maker doesn’t do this and can’t imagine any reason for leaving it like that. At any rate, do t let that be a reason not to purchase this shoe. It’s amazing! My first ride with these shoes was one of simple amazement. So this is what has been missing in my rides! I was riding in the wrong type of shoes before so it’s no wonder there was such a difference. I went from under amour running sneakers to these five ten sneakers! The stuff sole makes pedaling so much easier up hills or just in general. The smooth part of the sole sticks to my pedals. These are my first mtb shoes so I do t have much to compare to, but I would recommend these to anyone with flat pedals! I would give 5 stars but these are my first riding shoe so I have nothing to compare them too.

Adidas/Five Ten For The Win

I read a few negative reviews on these before purchasing and I really don't understand why. These shoes rock. Very grippy, durable, comes with a good set of laces, they cool. I really don't know what to know like about these. I even hike-a-bike quite a bit and have had no problems with that or in general! If I had to state anything negative I would say it takes awhile to break them in, but most good shoes require that. Break them in slowly and you'll love them.
