Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

70 mph Gusts and Snow but I Was Happy

Camped in the core of The Enchantments in October and the wind was brutal (sustained 30-40 mph with 70 mph gusts). The tent rainfly couldn't stay tied down and so the wind would whip into the tent along with snow. I stayed warm and comfortable as long I was in my bag. The down blanket fold was fantastic at keeping the snow and wind out and keeping me snug. The extra room in the bag, too, was great to have so I could adjust all night long (since I wasn't sleeping) and still be comfortable. The morning light showed that my bag was covered in snow but I never had an inkling of it during the night with how toasty I was.

Extreme feather leakage

Extreme feather leakage. Bought it in Colorado and couldn't return it because I live in Canada and we don't have an REI. Fabric feels very soft, but if you sleep in short sleeve t-shirt or shorts, you will stick to it. Wrote to Nemo and they said the "feather leakage is normal". Not true, my BF's (different brand) down sleeping bag never leaked. My gear is always taken care of very well, so leakage is not due to compression or storage. it's just a poorly made sleeping bag. Very expensive for something very disappointing.

Very comfortable and warm bag

I did a lot of research and decided that the Nemo was the bag I wanted and I have been so happy with my purchase. It is the most comfortable bag. I love the flap that you can cover up with like a blanket. It's so warm that one night while my family complained of being cold I was sweating. I'm a cold sleeper so I'm definitely glad the bag is so warm. I was comfortable on our last camping trip I just wanted to stay in my bag. I love the color too. The only drawback I've had is the zipper gets stuck in the fabric sometimes.

Side sleepers welcome

This bag is a revolution for side sleepers and those a little claustrophobic in the mummy bag design. I am rather short but have large shoulders. I got the long. So glad I did. It gives me the room I need to actually toss and turn in a bag. I tested this bag in high altitude nights, warm desert nights and it didn't disappoint. I haven't woken up in the snow yet, but I am usually cold when I sleep. This bag has kept me warm and cool when I needed. I love the ventilation pockets for staying cool. If you are hesitating I'd say just do it. You'll love it. The one thing I'd say is that the fabric seems fragile so take care of the bag. REI's sleeping bag tips really seem to help.

Great bag

We bought this bag for my wife who had always been uncomfortable in classic mummy style bags. She loves this bag and how roomy it is. This bag made all the difference between not being able to sleep comfortably and sleeping well. The bag is not ultralight, but it is warmer than a "unisex" bag with the same temperature rating. The lower grade down also helps with warmth (but not with weight, obviously). The amount of insulation is generous. We slept two nights with temps 14F and 25F and it was sufficiently warm. I am generally skeptical of gimmicky innovation, but this sleeping bag is totally works.

Roomy even for plus size woman

It feels like I'm sleeping in a soft turquoise cloud! Very roomy and warm, even for my 250 pound, 5'8" body. I can sleep on my back with my legs crossed in the zipped sleeping bag. I can turn inside the bag without it turning with me. The fabric is very soft and comfortable. It is comfortable to have the hood on with the flap covering my face. I don't feel like I'm suffocating, as I have with other sleeping bags. The extra blanket flap for covering the face easily and comfortably folds into the sleeping bag if it's not needed. Packs down surprisingly small (it's my first down sleeping bag). I love this bag!

Finally a bag that keeps me warm

I finally got the chance to use my Nemo. I'm a side sleeper who tends to get pretty cold when sleeping outdoors. We camped in mid-30's weather. Dry, no wind very little dew. When I got into my bag I was cold. As I covered up I could feel the bag heating up. I stayed warm and toasty all night. Only once did I have to add some cool air cause I was starting to heat up too much. I did stuff the bottom of the bag to prevent cold feet because I curl up and wore a hat. I woke up saying let's do it again! I'm curious as to how cold it will take me. Maybe next year I can find out. In the mean time I'm game for more spring camping.

LOVE this luxurious and toasty bag

I have only been able to use this bag once, but it was so amazing that I'm ready to write a review. This bag gave me one of the best nights sleep of my life. I used it in the Enchantments in central Washington in a October. Lows were in the 20's- I'm always freezing so I wore mid-weight base layers, a fleece, hiking pants, thick socks, and a hat to bed. I had to take everything but my baselayer off because I woke up so toasty! I loved being able to move freely in this bag! I've experienced moving around in other bags and finding that any spot that my body wasn't directly touching to be cold in the middle of the night- this entire bag was warm! The extra flap for "tucked in comfort" was nice and made me feel extra cozy. I loved the pouch for tucking in my camp pillow or a sweatshirt to use as a pillow that doesn't slip or slide away from your head. My only qualm is that I might have to play with the drawstrings around the head to figure out how to get it comfortable, it seemed to keep falling weirdly over my eyes. It was dark and I was comfortable overall so I let it be. This bag makes camping feel luxurious. I may be purchasing the 30 degree bag for warmer adventures! i had one of the best nights of sleep in my life with this bag and I cannot WAIT to use it again!

Excellent Gear

I bought this sleeping bag to prepare for a camping trip to Yosemite in March. We were concerned that the temperatures would be getting pretty low, so I decided to invest in a warm sleeping bag. This was the perfect choice. The down made sleeping warm and comfortable. The best feature was the spoon shape, which made sleeping even more comfortable. This is the best night of camping I've had since I bought this sleeping bag. The only downside, which makes this 4 stars instead of 5, is the zipper, which can catch if you don't zip carefully.

Thank GOD!

Our family just started camping a few years ago and I am always so cold, unable to sleep in my regular sleeping bag. Going to Sequoia, I realized I needed something better, so I ordered this NEMO. OK, I do not use the head cover, as it just smothers my face, but I LOVE, LOVE everything else about it. It is so light but quickly becomes super thick once opened. I hate my legs to be squished, and this shape allows movement. The extra flap at the top is great and I slept so well, I was nice and warm! So happy I made this purchase.
