The good and the bad

I purchases this tank top as a layer to my hiking gear. Size xs, 125lbs The good: The color and feel of the material is very nice. There is some tapering to the sides of the shirt so it can follow curves rather than looking like a box. The length of the shirt is a perfect fit. I do have a normal to short torso length. When hiking the shirt is durable but breathable and handles sweet very well. After multiple days of hiking wearing this shirt it does not smell (much). The bad: I wish the top was cut a little bit higher. It sits a little too low for my liking. Won’t stop me from wearing it, but it is annoying

I love Smartwool and finally splurged on this tank in black because black tanks are a staple for me, esp while traveling. Unfortunately, this top runs big on top. I’m 5’2 115 lbs, athletic build, and this lies so low and loose on me that I don’t even want to wear it. I bought an XS so I can’t go any smaller, but it’s already very fitted in the torso. If I hadn’t already washed/tried to shrink, I would return it. I prefer the fit of the older tanks.

Bizarre fit… tight in torso and gaps across chest

Let me start by saying I LOVE smartwool. This review is ONLY for the fit of the tank, which was so weird. I wear a D bra and yet, the top of this tank gapped super weird… and the torso area was really tight. (I am a pretty normal size 6-8 standard/athletic build). I ordered both a M and L and they both had the same fit issues. If you wear a size G bra and have a size 4-6 waist this tank might be right for you. Material as usual is a 10/10. For reference, my husband (who really doesn’t have any opinions about clothing whatsoever) took one look at me in the tank and said, “there is something wrong with that… you should return it”. LOL.

Very awkward fit

I bought this as a replacement for one that is several years old and now has a hole and I need to size up to medium, thanks to dreaded middle age. Now I know why they call it "middle" age. Two things have changed since I first bought this product: 1) it is no longer 100% merino wool; 2) the proportion is all wrong. The waist fits true-to-size based on the size chart, but the chest is super huge. So much so, that there is a noticeable, unflattering gap under my armpits. I expected a little room at the top because I am at the low end of the range of chest measurement for a size medium, but not this much room. Length is good for my 5'3" height. Since I wear this mainly as a base layer, for yoga, or for sleeping, I will keep it.

Not the best cut

Bit of an odd fit mainly in the cut out for arms. The material is as expected for the 150 series. I wear a medium in pretty much all Smartwool tops (5'6" 140 pounds, athletic build), but this fits tighter in the lower abdomen and has really large cutouts for the arms. Perhaps less of an issue with larger bust size. Love these in the the T shirt for traveling/hiking, but this isn't the "go-to" tank because of the fit. Won't return it, but won't purchase another.

baggy at the armpits

I bought the size medium and I am generally a size medium b/c bra. The length of this top is great. It does gap at the armpits and for the price, I'm unwilling to keep it. I could size down to a small, but then it might be tight on the belly and hips.

too much fabric under arms

I should have read reviews before I purchased. I bought this base layer in the black racer back style, size M (my usual). It had too much fabric under the arms and hung funny. I tried it with a sports bra and regular bra. It did not lay right with either bra, so I returned. Also purchased the blue tank top style in medium. That one fits perfect, so I'm keeping it. I hope they adjust the cut on the racer back style since I usually wear a sports bra when hiking or skiing.

I hate how much I love this shirt

I'm a cheap person and most of my gear has either been bought on sale or was hand me down... but this shirt is incredible. I backpacked for 5 days in muddy/rainy conditions. It never smelled, I could wash it in a river and it dried very quickly. Now I am going to get accustomed to wearing nice things! It is now my favorite active wear and I am going to buy a few more. Worth the expensive price tag.

Not true to size

I am a solid medium in all tops, but the medium was too large for me, particularly in the chest and armpit area. If you are on the fence about your size, I recommend you size down. I am a 34" C cup and the bust area is cut too large for me, even in size small, though it's fine for my purpose as an undershirt in the winter. I'm buying a second one. As an added bonus, wool hardly ever smells.

Odd Cut

The fabric on this top is lovely and very soft, but there is so much extra fabric in the underarms that they just flap open. I am fairly average in the chest, and the tank otherwise fit pretty well, so it seems to me this is an issue with the design.
