Great Hood if You Need to Wear a Helmet
Flywheel
First, let me say OR's lifetime warranty is the best in the industry. Great people, great company with great products. I ordered my Realm jacket directly from OR last year when REI didn't carry it at the time. Realm is a no-nonsense ultralight rain jacket that is made for high energy output activities in cool/cold temps. The fabric is similar to REI's eVent, which is highly breathable but won't be 100% windproof like a GoreTex shell. Unlike eVent, OR's own fabric is slightly lighter in weight but much softer and thinner so it feels much more comfortable on bare skin. I have used it primarily for cycling because the hood is so great that it can accommodate my cycling helmet entirely and I still feel very comfortable. The Lemongrass color is much better too for cycling. The fit is excellent and it can move with you. The positions of two external pockets are ideal for my use. Though the upper arms are bulky in size. For walking/hiking in the rain, however, the jacket is not ideal. Without wearing a big helmet, there is always a rather large gap open at neck directly underneath my mouth, even when zipped all the way up. As a result, rain can pour in. I have tried to tie the two neck cords together to close the gap but that is not very convenient. If you want to use it for hiking, get something such as REI's Rhyolite instead since it has a much smaller hood, so you won't have the same issue. Another weakness is OR's poor DWR treatment. In medium to heavy rain, it gets wet out in less than ten minutes and my lower arms and lower back can get wet even when temp is around 60s or below but humidity is relatively high. Without OR's famous Torso-Flow vents in place, Realm can get steamy in warm temps. In general I think OR designed Realm more for cool/cold temp high energy activities.

Pretty good hardshell

Use this ski touring in bad weather around freezing, like today. Kept me dry, I didn't notice any water ingress despite snow melting on me. It was puking and my pack got soaked. I like the hood and the elastic cuff on the sleeves. Cut is great, I'm 6'2 170lb and it fits well. It's also very light and pretty durable so far; no rips after tomahawking into trees. I think it's more breathable than Goretex hardshells, that is to say not very but it's the nature of the piece. The zipper also had some puckering and freezing issues but that could also be down to my frozen gloves. All in all a great product as usual from OR.

Go To Jacket

From going back and forth to work, trekking through the forest, to skiing in the alps, this jacket does it all whether it's dry, wet, hot or freezing out. Super thin, and breathable during hot summer days when you need protection from precip. It's also roomy enough to layer up during the colder months on the trail or on the slopes all while taking up little space in the backpack when you need to ditch it. This jacket stays in reach all year long due to the ever changing European weather I live in. I'm 5'8" and 155-160lbs and the large is a perfect fit. I've owned this jacket for over a year now and it's still solid.

Performs as promised!

Got this jacket about two weeks ago and with the two uses that I got out of it, it's already proven to be an amazingly versatile jacket. Climbed Mount Hood with this two weeks ago in 25-30 mph winds and it performed beautifully. Also used this past weekend up in Alpental where it rained all day and this thing kept me dry and comfortable inside. It's incredibly breathable, so you don't get that wet feeling inside the jacket even when you're sweating through your base layer. It is a more trim fit. I normally wear 16 34/35 dress shirt and I got a large so I could wear over my puffy or other layers. Highly recommended.

Ultra Light Hard Shell

The lightweight material used to make the jacket surprised me! The weight of the jack is extremely minimal which is great for high output activities like ski touring, x-country skiing and mountaineering. Initially I was concerned that the jacket might rip if it gets caught on a tree branch, however I've owned a few articles of clothing from OR that were also super light and appeared easily ripped but survived many excursions. So this shell won't take up much room in your pack and can provide that shield you need for the wind/snow/rain you encounter on outdoor adventures.

It did not fit and getting a refund has been a pain!

So disappointed about the return process. I am a first time customer and this will be my last time buying from you. My husband and I have been looking for a brand that can truly give us what we need in terms of weather proofing, looks, quality, breathable, etc. We gave you a try but the size didn't fit so we wanted to exchange it for the right style, size. After the arrogant response we received, we won't be coming back. Just hope I can get my $$ back. Your agent acted like we were bothering him and pretty much implied that he didn't need our business.

ultralight, waterproof & breathable

It's rare that I write reviews but when I do, it is because the product performed beyond my expectations. I've taken this jacket on kayaking trips, backpacking trips and motorcycle trips and it has performed flawlessly. Lots of water on it from kayaking, stayed dry. Been in downpour, stayed dry. Rode with this jacket motorcycling to test how it blocks the wind. Could hardly feel it! It breaths really good, completely waterproof, and the materials is soft to your skin. I had a hard time debating between Gore-Tex or this ascend shell, but this breaths much better than Gore-Tex and just as waterproof. I hate baggy jackets. I'm a athletic build. This jacket has a athletic build. We were an instant match. Trim fit, yep. Ladies love it and so should you!

Exceptional shell for all conditions

Have had this jacket about six months and am very impressed. The fit is slim as stated, I'm 6' and 160lbs and went with a large and have room for a mid layer when needed and I feel the medium would have been a little tight. I've worn it from 25 degrees and snow to 75 degrees in down pours and have found the ascent shell to breathe far better than other jackets putting my 3L goretex pro shell to shame. One issue I have had is the jacket is prone to staining but it is a rather small issue.

Best Overall Rain Jacket

In the past I've used a combo of a heavy, burly, but bomber waterproof shell, and then for ultralight days or times with a lower chance of rain, I'd use a very minimal option like a Helium Jacket. Since getting the Realm, I haven't been tempted to carry or wear any of my prior options. It has stretch, durability, breathability, and 100% bomber storm protection. It's just a smidgen heavier than the minimalist ultralight shells, but has all the features of the $400 jackets.

Great Fit and love the feel of this

have a lot of jackets from OR and I'd have to say I really love what they've done here. Totally rainproof, a great windbreaker, and the feel of the material is outstanding. I cannot stand the feel of a jacket that rubs against my neck/face but this material does not bother me. My job requires me to be in the elements during the day and this will be a keeper for awhile. The fit is not that tight and fits me perfect. I'm a 44 chest and wear a 16 1/2, 34/35 dress shirt.
