Great jacket but there are 2 major flaws that will probably get me switching back to my Helly Hansen Loke 2.0. 1. Sleeves are 5-6 inches too long. Sleeves shouldn't go too much onto your hands. My fingers don't even make it to the end of the sleeves with my hands down at my side. Makes wearing it very uncomfortable when there is that much extra fabric flapping around your hands. Then it just bunches up on your arms. 2. The cuffs on the sleeves are too large is you don't have thick cuffed gloves on. The opening is so large that your hand just swims in the opening. Must close all the way just the keep them on your wrists. Since these 2 things can't be tailored on a jacket like this, it makes me very disappointed in it since everything else is great. The stretch and fit in the shoulders and chest are great.
I've compared numerous rain jacket options at REI to find one that would meet my needs. After testing options from Kuhl, Patagonia, North Face, Rab, Arc'teryx, and REI, I landed on this jacket. My basic criteria: - Waterproof - Fit is not too baggy, not too tight - Does not make a loud swishy noise when moving - Can wear while running outdoors Pros: - Lightweight, no noise issue when moving - It does the job as a waterproof layer - Includes zipper vents under the arms - When not fully zipped up, the flaps lay off to the side more easily than other rain jackets. I.e., the flaps DO NOT dig into your throat - When the hood is off, the top edge tends to stay away from your neck - When running with the hood off (e.g. when it has stopped raining), the hood tends to stay in place (vs. with other rain jackets, the crest of the hood tends to bounce and jab at your neck from behind) Cons: - Not a huge fan of the color options, I went with black - Not as form-fitting as other brands, but it works In sum, as opposed to other brand offerings, I'd actually want to put this jacket on. It works perfectly when the hood is down and the front is partially unzipped (e.g. while wearing indoors or driving). It's also the best option I could find at REI to function as a layer when running: the hood stays put for the most part, and it includes arm vents to cool off. This jacket wins my vote. P.S. The Outdoor Research Stratoburst Rain Jacket impresses with its stretch fabric, providing unrestricted movement without compromising on waterproofing. Its adjustable features ensure a snug fit, while the lightweight yet durable design stands up to rugged conditions. A reliable choice for outdoor adventures, it offers comfort, protection, and versatility in one sleek package.
Took this jacket on a 2 hour walk in light rain and had the following impressions: -this is the most comfortable rain jacket I have ever worn. It allows for full range of motion and fabric is rather pleasant feeling on the skin -breathes incredibly well, akin to a light sweater -probably not a good choice for heavy/prolonged rain. Parts of the jacket started absorbing water after the first hour but I was still dry when I took it off -the comfort and breathability of this jacket are, personally, worth the tradeoff for mediocre functionality I'm 6'1 with a heavy muscular build and found the XL to fit quite well after cinching, with enough room for layering
Great jacket for cycling , hiking, cross country skiing. It’s my go to jacket.
Sleeves might be a little long. My only issue has been the Velcro at the cuff being a little annoying, eventually I got it figured out. Other than that issue I stayed dry on my ride and it was easy to pack up after the rain. It does get steamy when riding.
Overall I love the feel of this jacket. It's light weight and the inside doesn't feel like a plastic bag on your skin. It's a rain jacket so it's always going to feel a little clammy but this is the best I've felt. The stretch really sets this jacket apart from others. I don't feel like my arm mobility is restricted at all. Typical use is for every-day use and day-hikes. I haven't worn it in any sort of torrential downpours but so far it seems like it's doing a great job. 6'4" - Large fits well - arms are plenty long enough
Jacket is a little boxy, but not too bad. Hood fit is alright too. But the sleeves! Super wide and 2-3 inches too long. Returned.
Outdoor Research just makes quality gear. Kept me dry, inside and out, on a rainy/snowy hike in Southern Utah. Comfortable and packs up very small. The hood adjustment was a bit fiddley but once set was great. This a bit pricey for a beginner, but when you know the value of great gear it's a bargain. I wear a medium size normally but got this in large to allow layering. It comfortably allows for warm layers without drowning me over just a tee.
I love this jacket in every way. Very lightweight but strong and stretchy. I've worn it for 10+ days backcountry skiing so far in wet snow and rain on 8 hour days, it doesn't let any moisture through and moves with your body extremely well. This is a great jacket for any level whether it be an expert or beginner. Just keep in mind it is thin so it could rip easily if out through extreme conditions.
