PROS: This tent is loaded with features both included and ad-ins for purchase. I bought this tent for its ability to stay dry in the rain. With the rain fly properly installed and the garage addition (a must that should be included I think for the price) the inside of the tent stays very dry during a test rain. I set up a sprinkler to rain down water for two hours. I see up the tent and garage with the footprint (although I intend to use it when I go camping). The garage area did get a run through water but not soaking wet. The floor stayed dry without the footprint. There are pockets along both sides from back to front and plenty of hanging points for lights and stuff. CONS: While it's called an eight person tent that would leave no room for gear. Two full size air beds take up 2/3 of the floor space. So as family tents go is small compared to others. I would like to see a larger version (Kingdom 12) that is 3 feet longer and 2 feet wider. The zippers for the garage don't match up to the tent zippers which is more annoying from an OCD point of view but that little bit does allow more water to leak into the garage area. With the garage and footprint both of which are necessary if you plan to camp outside your back yard this tent is pricey. For over $500 I think both those items should be included. I'm not sure about the ventilation yet but with it wide open it should be ok. I'll add to this post after our first camping trip with it.
I'm a 71 yr old women who jus started camping a year ago and can put this up alone...my awesome sales person demonstrated it for my when I purchased it. Even during a monsoon rainstorm. I stayed dry and cozy because the air space between the rain fly and top of the tent creates great insulation! Every part is so functional too. I get so many great compliments when I'm camping. REI's quality can't be beat!
I bought this tent to make my wife my wife more open to the idea of tent camping. Thanks to this tent, and the REI Kingdom sleep system, I can happily report that there will be more tent camping in our future. Setup was a breeze and can easily be done with one person. The zippered curtain was a nice feature that I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did. The rain fly rolls up on the sides for better airflow during the warmth of the day and the vestibule in the back was also very spacious. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a well made tent dor a family or a spacious tent with a screened in porch. I absolutely love it.
Bought this for camping trip in Yellowstone NP. After buying cheaper tents in the past went with REI brand and was very happy. Can say tent was pretty easy to setup, would recommend to setup at home first, and subsequent times it is easier. Tent worked great for us, it rained 1 entire day at YNP, no water in tent which was a great surprise, and the room we had was outstanding both in height and length. Will add the "garage" next year to our camping enjoyment.
This house fits more than a family of Eight. There is enough room for camp gear. I place five bikes in the garage. This is a must accesory along with the foot print. I am 6' 1" and I can stand straight up! Takes less than 10 minutes to assemble. Remember to stake the four corners only then set the poles into the cross members as well as the center or spine of tent, then clip only the first two clips from the top if you forget then you have to rest unless you brought a ladder. :) The main pole down the middle fits into the end flaps you must do this before raising the tent. This is an awesome tent everyone should have at least one! You can see in the photos I have the rain flap on due to the heavy weather I was in but you can keep the rain flap on half or even a quarter of the tent just incase you need to deploy the flap. I do this all the time. Saves my bacon when it starts to rain. Less than a minute to button up the tent when used other wise you can amply watch the stars until you fall asleep.
We are really happy with this tent. It takes a little practice to get proficient at setting it up but once you have it, it's simple "with 2 people". It absolutely Poured for 4 hours the second day of our trip and this tent stayed dry as a bone! right out of the box. It's got a ton of room and excellent ventilation. If I had any complaints it would be the weight but even then, for what it is it's really not that heavy. It packs down very nicely and could be hauled by an adult on a family backpacking trip. There are some good youtube videos that will help with learning to set it up.
We started with the Kingdom 6 and put it up one time. It was a nice one but just didn't have the room we wanted. Enter the Kingdom 8. This thing is awesome! Super easy to put up...did it alone and worked great. Very nice design with the decider and an open area on the front. Sets up just like a porch. Also I'm 6'1" and amazingly enough I can navigate through the tent without ducking down! Only in the garage and through the doors do I have to bend down. We did add the footprint and the garage. We liked the storage of the garage so much we are going to pick up a second for the other side. That way we will have two entryways and with the devider in the middle it's perfect for splitting adults and kids. We look forward to using this quite a bit. Definitely recommend the footprint and the garage!!!
I have been through numerous tents over the years. I probably spent more on replacing tents in the past than I spent on this one tent. We have owned it for 2 years now and still absolutely love it. My boyfriend and I have a double high queen air mattress that we sleep on in the tent, plus our two 75 lb dogs and one extra large dog crate. We also just recently purchased the garage after reading all of the reviews on how wonderful of an addition it is. All in all, I highly recommend this tent to anyone. REI really backs up their products and never disappoints.
We took it out for the first time at a State Park. The nights were a little cold and the tent kept us warm. The access on both sides in nice. We did a practice run in our backyard and it took us 30 minutes to figure out the setup but onsite when camping we put the tent up in less than 10 minutes. It helps to have a second person as the side polls are easier to pull through as a team. Definitely put the rain guard on in areas where early in the morning condensation builds up. The tent rain guard totally kept us dry with no leaks. We bought an outdoor patio mat from Walmart for about $37 and it fit perfect on the inside. We also did get the footprint that is sold separately which I think is totally worth it. There are three of us so we also purchased some soundasleep twin air mattresses on Amazon. Those are a little pricey but comfortable. I don’t think two queens would fit well in this tent. With twin air mattresses you can move them around like you want. The only big issue I had was the garage in the morning and the condensation that dropped heavily. I enjoy the garage and the extra space but wish it did not drip Tear
This tent adequately for my 4 kids and my husband and I, with room to spare. I appreciated the outside fly acting as a vestibule because it kept the kids' smelly shoes outside the tent! The tent was very waterproof, which was extremely important to me. I gave this tent 4 stats instead of 5 because I'm not a fan of the new color scheme because it has no indication of what side the fly goes on. Even on the directions it still reminded you to match the colors (orange with orange, gray with gray) that don't exist with this year's colors. Also. We bought the footprint with the tent, which also had is matching the non existent colors.
