I can not say enough good things about this pack. It is very light and the side straps for your hips although they arent padded add so much extra support it really makes a huge difference in carrying the pack, and they are super breathable. I LOVE the fact that the pack opens like a regular backpack on the top, but also that there is a zipper that goes all the way around so you can open and grab things on the bottom with ease! I am 5'5 and I took this as my day pack for a trip to Peru and it worked wonderfully, I also lent it to a friend who is quite tiny and although she looked a bit silly with it on, she had nothing but good things to say about it.
I purchased this pack based on 2 recommendations from an REI specialist after she measured my torso. I have used it now 4 times on long day hikes (Sequoia & Grand Canyon) and absolutely love this pack. It sits comfortably on my hip and distributes the weight well. I have been using a Camelbak HV Mule for the last 4 years but started to need a little more space for extra clothing/food etc. It was just a little too small and when I stuffed it the weight distribution was off. So this is perfect. The only thing I would change is to add pockets to the hip straps. But not having those was not a deal breaker for me as all the other features outweighed this one thing.
I purchased this backpack recently for lots of trips I have planned, it's very roomy and lots of great pockets! It is going on it's first hiking adventure in Alaska today and I could fit lots of gear inside!
I really like this pack. It's simple cute and everything you need for a day hike. Hiking 20-30 mile days is what I used this pack for and it was great. I'm able to fit a osprey hydration sack in it all the snacks I would ever need and multiple layers. It fits comfortable doesn't rub weird during long. Days and is cute and comes with a flower:) the pockets are nice and accessible. The only downfall I say is the top of the pack comes up a little high to use when biking around town and stuff but other than that I love it for what it's made for; HIKING!
Something about the design of this wonderful pack makes it easier to lift off the ground, and to carry on your back. It just seems to leap up into the air. The top opens up and the whole front of the pack zips open so it is easy to find what you are rousting about for. One side pocket is wide and deep enough for a quart bottle and the other side zips shut to safely store all of your assorted small items. It also has three extra zippered compartments with one of them being easily accessible on the front of the pack.
I got this bag 2 years ago for my daughter for college. I was worried it would be too big for school, too small for camping but she says it's perfect for everything. She uses it every day at school (walking or biking to classes), weekend trips, has used it in the summer for 3 day wilderness camping (yes sleeping bag attached, no tent), 2 week trip to NYC, and a week trip to the Caribbean (it works as a carry on when flying.) That's just to show how versatile it's been. Perfect bag every time. I have had her spontaneously send me notes about how much she loves the bag. She carries her Macbook in it, and her Chem and Bio books. I loved the rain cover because we live in Oregon and so it was a big bonus, but I'm not sure she uses it. Daily use for almost 2 years. No issues. She's headed to Australia for 6 months this summer--and we just purchased the Womens Deuter ACT Lite 70 + 10 Pack. I just can't imagine her happy with any other brand.
I decided it was time to retire my older Camelbak, and chose this one after spending time looking at reviews of the older models. I'm a pretty petite woman (5'2), and loved that the design was aimed toward someone like me. The zipper on the front that allows you to access the bottom of the pack without taking other stuff out is also a HUGE plus, and one of the main reasons I chose this over other brands' women-specific bags. I'm used to more pockets, but this design works really well, allowing for ample room in the main compartment. I've only taken it on one day hike so far, but I loved all the adjustments that were easily reachable whenever I wanted to shift the weight a bit. My only two complaints: I wish the bottom was made of something more durable and that the water bottle pocket was deeper. The latter isn't an issue when you're using a bladder, though. I actually bought this in addition to the older model, because the two are a bit different feature-wise, but the newer one won out. First of all, the colors are brighter and the fabric seems to be a better quality. I thought I would like the older one because it has a stuff pocket in front (something my Camelbak had, as well), but I found I could just put an extra jacket under the lid. Plus, since that's gone, they were able to add a zippered pocket to the front! I also liked the idea of the hip pocket, thinking my iPhone 5S would fit in it (and I have to have my phone at the ready, since I use it as my camera), but it didn't at all. And finally...the newer bag just seemed to fit me better overall. The padding in the shoulder straps seemed ever-so-slightly different, and I didn't really like the padded hip belt. So, if you're debating between this and the older model that might be discounted, I'd say go for the new one.
This Deuter backpack felt like it was actually made for MY back (I’m 5’4”). It is comfortable and doesn’t make me too hot even stuffed with water and gear. Its perfect for all seasons. I’ve taken it for day hikes and 5 day hikes.
While planning a trip to hike the Camino de Santiago in Spain in the month of September, I knew I would need a new pack for the trip, and comfort and features would be a priority. I went into the REI store and got measured for a pack which was super helpful. When I have purchased packs before, I just tried something on until I found something that felt OK. This time, I found out I should buy a women's specific Small or X-Small. I did a lot of research and read a lot of tips about what to pack for the Camino in advance. The Camino is unique from other backpacking trips in the way that each nights stay is in an albergue, or hostel, so as a result certain gear, like Tent and cooking equipment will not need to be in my pack. As a result, a pack that would normally be considered a larger daypack is sufficient (26L-30L). I expected I would love the Osprey Stratos 26 prior to entering REI, but within about 5 minutes of having it on my shoulders it started to rub my neck. I then tired on a larger Deuter pack and a Gregory pack, both which felt much better. However, REI did not have the size of pack I needed in stock, so I ordered 6 different possible packs (from Deuter, Gregory & REI) from REI's website figuring I would try them all on and keep the best one. The Deuter ACT Trail 28 is the winner! I chose this pack over the others in it's category for a few reasons: 1) It is incredibly comfortable. It has adjustable straps at the top of the shoulder strap that allows you to loosen or tighten your load depending on how much is in your bag, and the hip belt, while not padded, is mesh so it's breathable. The hip belt take the majority of the load without noticing any pressure points. 2) It has a zipper opening at the bottom of the pack that allows you to access the stuff at the bottom of the pack without taking everything out. This is GENIUS! 3) I wanted a pack with an integrated rain-fly, since I will be gone a month in a place where there will likely be rain. I wanted a rain fly that was built into the pack so it fit perfectly. This one does. 4) All of my gear fits perfectly into this bag & I understand what all the pockets are for (sometimes this is unclear with other bags). Overall great design! The water bottle holder is somewhat lacking on the side of the pack, but this wasn't of major concern for me, since I will be carrying a bladder. I can not wait to actually use this pack on my trip!
I am an archeologist and often our projects involve 2-3 weeks of hiking all day. After countless hours of research, I decided on this pack and IT IS THE BEST. It has enough room for all my gear (2L CamelBak, clipboard, rainjacket, lunch, camera, 1L water bottle, field tools, GPS, small first aid kit) and is SO COMFORTABLE. The design of the pack and all the adjustable straps work well so the load sits comfortably between your shoulders and hips. The side zip pocket is great for random small stuff and is surprisingly big. The water bottle pocket is a little short for a big bottle like mine (Waves 1L bottle), but I was able to loop the hiking pole strap around it for more security. I didn't really utilize the front zip entry for the main compartment, but I like the feature and think it would make this pack good for traveling. It's so great that my field supervisor tried it out and bought one for herself!
