Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality orienteering compass This compass has all the features that I need and none that I don't. The no tools required to adjust for declination is a little problematic but once you figure it out it's not too tough and once you make the adjustment you can pretty much forget about it unless you are a world traveler. I use my compass and maps as a backup to my GPS and in fact when I got this one adjusted I noted my GPS was off and in need of a recalibration! The global needle is present to make it a worldwide (i.e. southern hemisphere) compass. A feature I'll never need but it does make the needle react quickly while on the move as there is little needle drag. Things I don't like - the dial has orienting lines but the case is opaque so you have to fudge a little when plotting bearings from a map. Not important to me as I can't navigate that closely anyhow. Second thing - mine developed a small bubble on my first trip into the field which so far doesn't really effect the workings of the compass but it does irritate me. For those two reasons I'm downgrading from 5 star to 4. I'll probably exchange it for a new one without a bubble if they have it in stock just to eliminate the small irritation factor.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not *really* 'tool-free', if you ask me... Alright: This is a good compass. It might even be an exceptional compass. The problem is with the declination setting. Look, I've got large, strong hands (they're not "yuuuge", but they are above average), and I had about 99% of the maximum allowable frustration in setting the declination. I finally used a wood clamp to hold the outer ring while I pinched and turned the declination ring. Even then, it was no trivial exercise! This is NOT, therefore, "tool-free" declination!! I will concede lack of experience with this compass and possible out-of-the-box (er, blister-pack) stiffness. Fair enough. Seems like a QC check might alleviate this frustration...? I shall reiterate: good compass, but prepare yourself for some frustration, at least at first.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good compass but difficult to set the declination I actually can't get it to set the declination at all and gave up trying. I'll be taking it to a store for them to do it for me :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Compass But Declination Setting a Pain Nice simple compass that gives you the features you need but boy do I have trouble setting the declination. I've been on the internet trying to find the magic but I can't seem to get the hang of it. The point of a compass (ha!) is to keep things simple.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from manufacture defectived I have bought this compass and it developed a bubble while I was on my SAR Training. I returned it to the store and exchanged for a new one. The second compass also developed a bubble and I also noticed there was a crack on the face plate. I return to the store to find out all the compass's on the shelf had the same crack. I called the company and was sent a new compass but that one that was sent to me still had the crack. I called the company again and complained about the defected in their products I was told there was nothing they could about the issue. I told the person at Bruntun customer service I was disappointed on their product quality. I returned to REI returning the the compass for a fourth time still noticed several of compass's on the shelf still had the same crack. I mentioned the problem to a REI sales person and his comment was there was nothing he can be about the product. I suggested that he mentioned the problem to a manager or to the Bruntun salesman for the company. I have concluded that due to the comments of the Bruntun customer service and to the comments of the sales person at REI I am not recommending this product.
