Even though I adventure travel solo, I do pack some gear. The right gear. Gear that makes it more comfy for a middle-aged guy to still camp in the backcountry. I like to kayak. I like to hike. I like to explore. I like to mountain bike. Just coming back from my 1st trip with my Skybox 12 and Yakama hitch-mount bike rack, I am so happy I ended up with the SkyBox. I was concerned about the hatchback not being able to open or the kayak not allowing the box to open. All of those concerns were unfounded. Worked great! And, my mpg with the box, kayak rack and mtb rack was still 20mpg which is not back for a 6-cyl Volvo. I would highly recommend this box if you are looking to share your roof with other items.

Mileage hit was bigger than other reviewers

Other than the height - it’s pretty tall mounted on Whispbars on a 2016 Subaru Forester - this box did its job very well this winter. Mostly carrying Nordic gear around town and on road trips. My tailgate does not hit the box - sometimes is barely kisses the box. However, the mileage hit my car took was much greater than other reviews on this site. For longer distance trips south from Anchorage, to the downhill area (40 miles) or a cabin (110 miles) my usual winter mileage is 30-33. With this box, my mileage was consistently dropped to 27-28. Perhaps other users drive more slowly, and the mileage hit increases with increasing speed. It’s substantial and surprising.

Yakima Skybox 12 on Subaru Forester XT

I purchased the Yakima Skybox 12 for a 2016 Subaru Forester XT with the Yakima Jetstream (small) and Timberline Towers for an upcoming trip. They all fit perfectly. The Skybox has plenty of room to clear the back hatch and spoiler of the vehicle. I am a first-time user and the clamps are easy to use and figure out how to attach to either jetstream/square/round crossbars. It's also nice that the clamps can be moved forward or backward to fit a vehicle's crossbars without adjusting them. I drove 90 miles home after installing the box and noticed only a slight flex/shake to to front. Wind noise is hardly noticeable and that's with a sunroof above me. I only lost around .4mpg (27.8 avg). The latch to open the box does feel flimsy when opening but a more secure or sturdy style would add more weight and hardware. The Skybox is slender enough to move to either side of the roof and fit a kayak on top as well. So far it has been loaded with a fully packed Osprey Kyte 46L, Atmos AG 50L, Kestrel 48L, large sized dog bed, and two more duffles and had plenty of room to still spare. I'm 5'10 and can install the box alone. The only trick is to open a car door to stand on the floorboard to reach the internal clamps inside the box...same trick applies to getting items out. If you're vertically challenged or not agile you may have problems, just be sure to have a friend help.

Great box, hatch bangs into it.

Just purchased this for my 2015 Subaru Outback. I called the store prior to purchasing to make sure that it would fit without interfering with my hatch. I was told it would clear it fine. It doesn't. I have it moved all the way forward, but the hatch still hits the rear lip of the box, and I'll likely solve this when I get back to VA with a saw or grinder, cutting out part of the lip of the box. I hate to do it, but it seems as if I will need to. Honestly, it's only catching the rear lip of the box, so it's more an annoyance than anything. The back was also dented in, and I didn't notice until this morning. A staff person helped me put it on my car, and he was at the back, but never mentioned it either. Maybe he didn't see it. I honestly don't care. It really doesn't interfere with the use of the box. I am happy with how easy it is to attach to the roof, and that I can open it on either side. The keys seem a bit tricky at first, but maybe it's just me being new with it. LOTS of room in the box for all my outdoor gear, which was steadily filling the back of my car, and since I travel for work, I've long needed a place for things I haul. The box is very firm, and it sounded like I was getting a bit of noise driving back from the store, but when I checked this morning, the box was crooked on the roof, so I adjusted it. Hopefully that fixes that issue. I'm happy with it, and it serves the purpose I had in mind. Even with all my outdoor gear stashed in it, there's room for more. Purchasing it online was easy, as it was shipped to a local store where I was assisted in getting it to my car roof. I've had a Yakima box in the past, and was happy with it, so I chose to get another after browsing what was available in local REI stores. I received emails when it was being shipped, when it arrived, and was called as well upon its' arrival. All in all, another good experience with REI.

Solid product, easy install.

This was a very easy install and holds a lot of gear. The Yakima fit guide indicated it would fit my 2017 Subaru Outback, and it mostly does, however when my hatch is open it impacts and scratches against the back of the Cargo Box. The Skybox is set as far forward as it can go and still scratches the plastic trim on the hatch's spoiler. I'd still strongly recommend this product, it doesn't have any noticeable impact to my mileage, I was able to average 35.7 on a road trip with the box on top. Having dual sided opening capability makes loading/unloading easy no matter where you are parked. Additionally, the key wont come out until the box is securely latched shut you never have to worry if the box was closed properly.

Perfect amount of space for all adventure needs

I purchased this for a cross country move and based on some reviews, I had concerns I wouldn't be able to use my hatchback. I have a 2014 Subaru Forester and my hatch opens just fine with the box on top. It was super easy to install and the salesperson at REI helped me install it in the parking lot. It took just a few minutes. I like that it is narrow enough that I still have room to put my canoe on top of my car and my bikes on the back of my car. I like that it locks and that it isn't easy to steal as I currently live in a city where racks get stolen and cars are broken into often.

Extra Loads

2014 Purchase. family of 5 all skiing. Needed a way to haul extra gear and skis. Easy to install and remove to fit into garage. When I say easy...If you need helping opening a jar of jelly or a bottle of wine you may not think its easy...I can carefully fit our skis and boots in the box however as the kids get older an can see it being a problem fitting their boots...Keeping in mind that we probably don't want the boots in the box on the way to the Mountain because no one likes to put on cold boots.

One Year Later...

As promised, I wanted to follow up with my thoughts of the SkyBox 12 after some actual use in winter weather. After the initial install on my son's Trailblazer in November 2017, it endured several trips to Houghton & Ironwood, MI, the Birkie trail in northern WI, and a multitude of expeditions to northeastern MN ski trails -- plus daily trips to Twin Cities area ski trails for my son's high school practices. Temperatures were as cold as -30 degrees (air temp) and snowfalls of over 20". The SkyBox worked extremely well even in subzero conditions. I was afraid the handle would freeze up or lid wouldn't operate properly in extreme conditions, but other than a couple of times where snow/ice built up and the lid had to be slammed a bit harder to engage the latch, everything worked as well as one could hope. I stand behind the 5-star rating I gave it a year ago -- a quality cargo box that stands up to all conditions.

Great box, bad fit advice from Yakima

This is a great roof box. It's easy to install, has a great stuff lid and is relatively quiet on the road. Unfortunately, Yakima's online fit guide is disappointing. It said the box would fit my 2016 outback, which technically it did, but I couldn't open the rear hatch. Apparently when you choose your vehicle on the website, they show you everything that will fit the roof of your car. Then you have to go to the bottom of the page, click on the 'will it clear my hatch' link, find the measurement chart and then go measure your car. I assumed that if the box came up when I entered my vehicle, that it would fit and ACTUALLY BE USABLE on my vehicle. When I called Yakima customer service, they where not at all helpful. Luckily I bought it from REI and they where incredibly helpful and made sure we ended up with a product that actually worked for us. Yakima makes good boxes, but make absolutely sure it will work on your vehicle.

Expanded Space for Camping Supplies

I decided to keep my current vehicle and expand the storage by purchasing this roof storage rack. I used the rack on a trip to Moab and Yellowstone. This allowed be to easily fit all of my wife and I’s camping, hiking and biking supplies for a 5 day trip and I was able to see out the back window of my VW Tiguan. There was little to no road noise during most of the trip. I did start to hear some noise above 75mph, but not distracting. I store this on a ceiling rack in my garage, it is easy to install and uninstall. I can phically handle this task myself. The only knock I have is the unit needs to be locked for the keys to be removed. Installing and uninstalling, the keys have to be in the lock.. So its always locked when it is closed, even when it is stored in the garage.
