Bought this shovel with the hope that the smaller design and size of shovel would outweigh the fact that the handle did not extend. I took this shovel out on a Rescue training class and the shovel shape and handle is not ideal while digging. The small, non-expandable handle makes it tough to get quality strikes in avalanche debris. Towards the end of the day, the bottom button lock went inside the shovel handle. This prevented me from locking it to the longest position. This can be easily fixed with some tools to bring it back out of the shovel handle, but I can no longer not trust it when a true emergency would happen. I have returned the shovel and went with another backcountry shovel.

Stick with BCA

As per usual with BD equipment, it looks good but the quality just isn't up to par with other brands. I inspect my gear before every outing and noticed no issues. I went to dig a pit yesterday and the button that locks the handle in place was lost inside the handle. So the shovel broke just sitting inside my pack. I'd stick with a company that focuses on avi gear and stay away from one that tries to do it all.
