Sizing notes

Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11". PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam and ¾ inch shorter in total rise. TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam and 1 inch longer in total rise.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice pants, sizing is odd. First off: "steel gray"=khaki and "asphalt"=dark gray. I'm 5'7" and weigh ~150lbs; I have more of my height in my legs. I normally wear a size 12 or 14, sometimes I need longer fit pants. I ordered the size 12 regulars of these. They were a bit snug through the hips, but the main problem was that they were about 2" too long. With a zipper at the bottom of the pant leg, you can't easily correct that. I went in and tried some on at the store and found a 14 petite fits. I never would have guessed I'm a petite, but there you go. They are loose through the bum, but there's no real give in the fabric, so I'd rather not have them too tight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thanks for improving these pants! When I bought the prior version of these pants, I complained about the pockets (they previously had Velcro patches instead of more secure zippers). I also discovered that they wore through very fast on the inseam where they rubbed against the shoelace rivets of high-top style hiking boots. Thank you, REI, for fixing these problems! Now the main cargo pockets have zippers (I still think they could be a little bigger--these pants are a utility item, not a high fashion item) and the bottom of the inseam appears to have been reinforced in a way that will prevent them from tearing as they contact high-top boots. I have bought several pairs of the new, improved version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oh so versitile Are you wondering if you should spring for these pants? Do it. These are fast drying, great for biking, I wear them to work every day as a barista, and they make a great work uniform too. I love them, and am on my third pair, the first of which I handed off to a friend because I slimmed down a bit. I still have the other two. The new pair I got has color coded zippers, so you can tell at a glance which zippered on pants leg, goes on which side. I like this upgrade. The legs on my old pants fit just great on my new pants. I was pleased to find. If you are able too wash both pants and pant legs together always, so the fade evenly. I wear mine mostly as shorts, and they are faded unevenly because of this. Great pants. Thanks REI

Rated 2 out of 5 by from almost great, except for waistband buttons I wanted to like these -- they fit much better than most versions of Sahara petite pants over the past few years. Unlike most of the previous versions, these are actually petite. But there are two inner waistband buttons (so that you can adjust part of the elastic) that hit at just the wrong place for me. I think having buttons poking into my stomach would drive me crazy, so these are going back. (It would probably work to remove the buttons and cut the elastic shorter, so that the cut ends are tucked inside the fabric -- hard to describe if you're not looking at the pants, but I think that would only disable the elastic on the front. But I decided I didn't want to perform minor surgery on full-price pants.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the fit I bought this style pant a few months ago after trying on every style at the REI store. It was the only pant that fit me comfortably. I purchased a pair. After one hike I went back and purchased another pair because they fit so well. I'm 5/4" and weigh 130lbs. I'm over 69 yrs old and am finding it harder to get pants to fit well. The 8P fits very well in the hips, waist, and length. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I would prefer a pant that rolls or zips to a capri length. I have fair skin and shorts are not the option for hiking in the sun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Pants! I recently purchased these pants with my Dividend and when they came I was immediately impressed with the quick shipping. Thanks REI! The pants? Outstanding. I wore them the next day on a hike to test them out and they passed with flying colors. 4 pockets in front and 2 in the back. LOVE the huge zippers on the legs plus the velcro closure. The color (dark slate) doesn't show the dirt, either. I purchased a size 8P which fit perfectly.........love the adjustable waistline, too. My husband was so impressed, he's going to get a pair for himself!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just What I'd Been Looking For Finally a pair of cargo pants in petite lengths and ones that sit at the waistline. Most pants sit below the waist, which I find uncomfortable and unattractive. I bought these for a trip to Yellowstone and they were comfortable, with pockets that had enough room for stuff. I liked the expandable waist feature. I did not buy them expressly for the zip-off feature, but I ended up using them as shorts. The legs were easy to get on and off over boots.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfy and functional These pants are great - zip off shorts, lengthwise zipper so you don' need to take off your boots. I am 5 ft, 115 lbs. I normally wear size 4 or 6 but these pants fit as size 2 petite. There is a velcro strap at the bottom to make the tight at the ankles if they are a little long - since you can't hem them due to the zipper. I like that they are roomy in the thighs. My only wish is that the shorts were longer. They are several inches above the knee. The listing doesn't show but the waist band is adjustable inside - with some buttons and multiple button holes. I like the high rise that fits the waist. (I do not like the newer low rise pants that seem to be most of what is available to buy these days).

Why not make the shorts part of these pants a little longer.  Nobody wears short shorts any more on the trail!

Asked by: the Blonde
i wish the shorts were shorter! to me the point of having convertible pants is to wear as little as possible, given the weather. what is the point of having shorts that aren't short?

I bought a regular size to get the rise I need but the legs are just toooooo long. Any recommendations to pass on to a tailor to shorten the legs without shortening the shorts?

Asked by: PNWraised
I have altered REI pant legs before and would do them again rather than send them to a professional since I do not wear these for fashion. The current model has a velcro tab at the bottom. If you really need the velcro tab, you can just take off the stitching and move up the hem and re-attach the velcro tab. However, the tab does have a lot of bar tacking which is difficult to undo. So I would just cut out the entire tab and re-attach. The zipper can be cut and re-tacked at the ends to shorten. I have done this with some kid's pants I bought 30 years ago from REI. I later learned that I can just buy petites instead of adjusting the pants. I wish REI would sell petite shirts with shorter arms too.

What are the leg opening dimensions (i.e., circumference of the leg at the bottom)? It helps in guessing how tight the pants will be for people who don't have skinny legs and/or need to wear knee braces.

Asked by: svaal
The leg opening circumference is 16.5 inches.

Version from early 2000s were great w/ angled entry inset frnt & back pockets and double cargo pockets.  The no-sit zips are nice, but not enough to make up for changing to patch pockets front & back. Please make a classic version; Charge extra.
