Exactly what I was looking for!!
I went looking for a new lighter weight multi-tool to replace my ginormous, heavy Swiss Army multi-tool. I really thought about what I found most useful, for me that's a small knife blade and a decent pair of scissors. My primary needs are to be able to cut through seal-a-meal food bags, trim first aid supplies, and any other minor blade needs. After looking at everyting at REI, this was what I chose. It's small without being unusably so (for reference, it's the size of a standard full-sized cigarette lighter when closed. The scissors work very well and are sturdy, and you don't have to open the whole thing up to use the knife blade. I think it's very well designed from a functional standpoint and priced right.
Not worth it, scissors don't cut
I really wanted to like this thing... I'm an ultralight backpacker so this allowed me to save the weight of individual scissors, tweezers, etc. Unfortunately, these scissors don't cut anything. The blades don't line up, and just as another reviewer stated, they end up gnawing on what you're trying to cut, rather than slicing. The tweezers are pretty flimsy, and the blade dulls quickly. With some stronger steel and better craftsmanship this would be a great tool, but this is just simply unreliable for the backcountry. As a prime example, it won't even cut moleskin...
Tweezers could use some work
All the tools work great especially the scissors nd file. the flat head screwdriver is for very light task but that how all mini keychain multitools will be. I'd prefer the blade to be a V-grind rather than a chisel grind because in my experience, V ground blades cut better. These are minor issues and for the price I paid, it wasnt enough to deduct stars. The main gripe I have with this tool is the tweezers. complete junk. The ends dont meet evenly. Because they are squeezed into such a slim handle, there isnt enough bend in the tweezers for much strength to be applied. They should look to victorinox tweezers as examples (thicker steel, ends meet evenly).
I Wanted to Like it More...
I've had a few of these, and I really wanted to like them. They are cool looking, come in colors, and with just enough tools to carry out tasks that pop up around the house, at the office, or when you are out an about. However...The biggest problem is the scissors. They just don't "cut" it. The metal is poor -- I notched the edges of one pair just cutting through a couple of small zip-ties. And the cutting edges don't meet properly on any examples I've used. You'd think that they should be able to do a decent job on a plastic bag. Nope. Cat food bags, beef jerkey, trail food, MRE outer bags, packets for instant lunches -- all end up getting knawed rather than cut. You're better off using the knife blade -- which kinda defeats the reason for having scissors. I've had much better scissors on other small Leatherman tools. Corrosion or rust seems to grow on the knife blade, but at different rates on the different tools I have. The grit side of the nail file seems to start showing "whatever" soonist. I really need to find something else and put these into the donation box.
Expect to have it taken by TSA
I had this tool confiscated by TSA the first time I tried to bring it onto an airplane. It was packed in a rolling carry-on, inside a dopp kit. If you read Leatherman's website carefully it says that the tool meets the criteria from the TSA, but that TSA agents have total discretion to confiscate items. So it's compliant until they say it isn't compliant. So as long as you don't plan on flying with it or view it as a disposable tool, it's fine.
Love this Leatherman!
This Leatherman is perfect for the backcountry. It is tiny, light, has the essentials for a long backpacking trip and nothing extra that you don't need. The carabiner is perfect, clips right into place in my pack so I can find it every time (and opens a beer at the end of my hike!). This is my 3rd leatherman, and each one has been perfect for their application.
Perfect for the backcountry
I've had a series of different tools for my backcountry adventures. This one is PERFECT. It has all I need and the clip ensures that it's always hanging right at the top inside of one of my pack pockets. Never seem to lose this one unlike the others which always went to the bottom and eventually lost. Well done.
The only knife I need when backpacking
Has all of the tools needed for backpacking, knife, scissors, tweezers, and file. Some say you don't need a file, but I can't stand it when I get a chip in a finger nail and it catches on anything and everything. The file also doubles as a small flathead screwdriver. The clip is also a passable bottle opener. Great as an every day carry tool, as it is light and has the tools you need.
Perfect Ultralight Multitool
I needed more scissor power than my Swiss Army classic could provide while keeping my pack light. My big toe nails thickened to the point of busting nail clippers and the SA scissors didn't make a dent while thru-hiking. The Style CS delivered with the spring loaded scissors being able to make the basic cut. The bottle opener quite handy too!
Best of the small multitools.
I used this multitool on the JMT. It's light, sharp and the scissors are very functional. I unfortunately lost my first CS so I bought another.
