Great glasses
Wore these a couple times on overly sunny days on the mountain. Didn't have any problems. They feel lighter than I expected, but they fit comfortably. When I first held them, the frames felt flimsy, but after a few days use I was able to get comfortable with their stability. These did a great job of blocking the brightness while still allowing me to see everything clearly. A couple times when we stopped moving, I had problems with them fogging up, but that's a problem I have with all eyewear, so I'm guessing it's more me than the glasses. Oh, and I look awesome in all the photos from those weekends, so there's that.
NICE LIGHT AND GREAT WIND PROTECTION
My eyes get watery when out on my road bike on cycling trips. Although these are geared towards Mountain Climbing the lower shields caught my attention. They work perfectly for blocking the wind when I am riding. Lenses are made for extreme light but work fine in moderate light as well. Arm ends are adjustable/bendable for a perfect fit. Look great and have received lots of interest from fellow bike riders. I just think they should have included a micro fiber sunglass bag for cleaning and storage. You do get a nice head strap. I just LOVE them and wear them riding and just around town. Worth the money and I have no regrets!
Great glasses
These glasses are a little pricey, but if you are using them for mountaineering, get them. The adjustable frame keeps them snug on your face and I didn't even need to break out ski goggles on denali because they blocked plenty of wind. I wore them for 23 days straight and had no issues and they were not uncomfortable.
Great eye protection
Recently used on a few climbs in WA. Did research on quite a few glasses and decided on these. I'm 6'3" with a normal size face and the glasses fit great; they provided great coverage on glaciers, I was concerned about light coming from the bottom but this was not an issue. The fact I could bend the sides around my ears to ensure they didn't slip was welcomed and why I recommend these glasses. I live in MI so I won't be using these more than a few times a year, however for the price point they will serve the purpose well.
Mediocre fit and weak retainer strap
Bought these for a Denali ascent. At home beforehand, could not get the fit right. Shields rested on my cheekbones, while big gap at the eyebrow. Bent sides around ears in all sorts of configurations and could not get a good fit. Took anyway, and then on the Kahiltna Glacier the retainer strap loosened every 20 minutes or so. Just not enough friction between rubber slider and strap. Chums or other straps would have worked much better. Pulled my 25+ year old REI glacier glasses out of my pack, with equally old Chums strap and wore them for the next 22 days. Maybe not designed for American faces, or maybe just not well designed. REI should bring back their classic branded models.
Highly recommend
I'm a kiteboarder and wanted some dark glasses for on the water use. These come with added, removable side wind protection, as they are made for being on snow/glaciers. Since I spend a lot of time in the wind, they come in handy. When I sue them for casual use, I remove the wind protectors. Since these glasses are made for snow, they are dark which is great for me since my eyes are sensitive to light. They are not polarized, but still work great for watersports!
protection even in intense sunlight
If you have sensitive eyes like me, these are the bomb! I haven't been on a glacier in years, but these glasses are perfect for the desert and mountains of the Southwest where I spend my time outdoors. They double as sunglasses and make it much safer when I'm driving into the sun on my morning commute to work. Very comfortable, too!
Good sun protection, but they get foggy
Good performance for skiing and Cycling with the sole disadvantage of getting foggy extremely quickly if you are using a hat and/or you don't move with enough speed for the glasses to ventilate
"Too much whiz and not enough bang"
I live in Hawai'i where the climate is always on the humid side, which means a great deal of perspiring. The black rubber around the glasses is peeling off. I find black spots on my face on a daily basis. The nose bridge gets sweaty underneath. Lastly, the side clip-on protectors keep falling off and now I only have one. I have always loved shopping at REI, but this is not a happy ending for me especially since they were an expensive gift from my family for my birthday. These glasses need to be improved for hot and humid weather.
Perfect for mountain sunlight
This glasses were designed specifically for the mountains in the winter with the winter sun. For anyone who's been in the mountains in the sun, possibly on a glacier, you know the impact of the sun. These glasses are fantastic for protecting your eyes in the bright winter sun. One company whose customer service rivals REI is Julbo. Have a problem, both companies will be everything to fix the issue. Can't say enough good things about these glasses. See a picture of a true alpine explorer in a magazine these days and there's a good chance they are wearing these glasses.
