Better-Half loves them but adjustments were needed
My wife recently wore these for 2 months trekking and climbing in Nepal. She is of Japanese-American descent. That is to say, her nose is Asian but these fit well. As with the Vermont glasses, they work well in very bright light with or without snow. Glare is not an issue. The changes required upon purchase were in line with what has been mentioned here by others. 1. The black nose pads fall off. One reviewer pinched the metal frame holding the pads. Good idea. We did the same and also used a bit of low -strength (purple) Vibra-Tite (threadlocker). 2. As mentioned by others, the nose guards fall off as the snap does not stay closed and you can lose the guard. We found the purple threadlocker to not be sufficiently strong and resorted to using (blue) Loctite gel super glue. With this glue you can still unsnap them. We do not suggest using Loctite RED as then heat or flame is required to unsnap! 3. One reviewer mentioned that the ears on the side shields bent so as to not stay on the frames. We have had repeated problems with this to the point that we bought 4 pair of side shields from Julbo. Accordingly backups are always taken along. We have had several ears bend so as to make the shields unusable. Our answer has been to place one end of the shield in a vice and pliers (using cloth wrapping) at the two ends of the shield, and then using a heat gun one can open the arc (horseshoe) of the shield so that the shield does not have to be stretched as far when putting them on the frame. Place heat on outside of shield as heat on the inside can make the ears too hot such that they become soft and move! Don't release tension from pliers until the plastic arc of the shield is cool again so that it keeps its new shape. #3 has not been fully tested as I have just recently done this. She is wearing them, and so far so good. But time will tell. We plan on taking extras that have been altered with us when we travel in case there are issues. It would be advantageous if Julbo addressed these issues. All this was done as she wanted to keep them. None of this took too long. She is very happy with them and that is what counts! However we are not going to recommend these glasses as we assume that most people buy glasses thinking they should work out of the box. We agree. She has been wearing Julbo for decades (at least 4 of them) and we have never issues with Julbo glasses like we have had with our latest pair of Cham and Vermont sunglasses (see review on broken arms). Still, once sorted, they are the bomb!
I LOVE the look and Style but....
At the first moment on the glacier, I couldn't have been more pleased. Stylish, not tooooo heavy (you sacrifice a bit for the style), great sun protection and fit really well. However, after the first time taking them off and putting on my jacket, I notice the nose pad fell off. Thank god I found it the first, the second, the third and even the fourth time. But after two weeks in the mountains, I lost one and then second. They were wildly uncomfortable about that. I emailed Jublo and they were aware of the issue. Gave me a mild fix option of pinching the metal to keep them in place. This is a far from permanent solution. Honestly, Buy a different pair. Its not worth the hassle.
The Julbo Cham glacier glasses are classics for a
After multiple days of skin ups and ski downs, I can stand behind the classic design of these shades. First, I was really happy with the fit of the frames. They provided the full coverage I was looking for without any extra low hanging glass to get in the way of my wide-mouth grin as I squiggled my way down runs. The soft leather side shield were extremely comfortable and allowed for a more secure fit than I would otherwise be willing to put up with from other plastic materials. But what really impressed me was the 360 degree adjustable temples; no other glasses have been so accommodating to the needs of different sized faces/heads as the Chams. I was able to adjust them quickly to both wrap fully around my ears for high action down hills and also ease them back to allow for more air flow when breathing heavy hiking uphill. The lens’ themselves were also of high quality, with category 4 polycarbonate material, they are anti reflective which helped keep glare out of the picture. The Chams were perfect for my overnight trip to the Snowbird Hut. With just a small overnight pack I was happy to find they folded down fairly flat and fit in the brain of my pack without too much bulk and bust. My only complaint was losing a nose pad within the first few hours of having them on that left me looking a little dorky. Tape hanging from the repair job and a slight indentation from the lack of support, I found that having a more secure nose pad system would be necessary if I were to purchase them again. But overall, the Chams lived up to their long history of classic mountain style and performance.
One single flaw re Julbo Cham Sunglasses
I really like the sun glasses. They provide a very noticeable relief against bright sunlight. But the nose pads keep falling off. I have lost two. I am wearing the sunglasses w/o the left pad. Doesn't feel any different. Julbo needs to include extra nose pads. If you purchase this item, take a few minutes an glue the pads on with some Elmer's glue. That will should eliminate the problem.
Great utility and style... but those nose pads...
When the nose pads are on and not lost, these are the best sunglasses I've used in years. I work outdoors and the light occlusion and side shields reduce most eye strain I experience in the field. I actually bought two pairs over the past two years: one for field work and the other for driving, which has a slightly stronger light occlusion. But when those nose pads are inevitably lost, they are uncomfortable and painful, with metal pinching down into the bridge of your nose; they also start to slide down the nose very easily. Julbo support have been kind enough to send replacement pads, which I fully appreciate, but if I still want to wear these glasses for longer, I know I can't abuse customer support and must purchase them. Unfortunately, they sell one pair of nose pads for $5.00, plus shipping. I would request that they make a bulk purchasing option, so I won't have to worry about this issue. Or they should just redesign the glasses so the nose pads don't fall off. One or the other. I can't recommend these glasses to friends because I know I would be putting them through this same experience.
REI should discontinue this product.
One of the most disappointing purchases I have made in 31 years of being an REI member. Purchased summer 2024 during a vacation and used for maybe 5 ez day hikes. After that I kept the glasses in their cloth bag, in the original box, in a dresser. I pulled them out April 2025. Upon attempting to adjust the ear loops one broke off under very little force. I can not believe these are made with such fragile material. These are supposed to be for high-altitude mountaineering, which by definition means rough conditions. If they were to break during their intended use it could have dire consequences. It's totally irresponsible to market such a low quality product as appropriate for extreme mountaineering. This is actually the second pair of Julbo glacier glasses I have owned that failed in this way. The first time I thought it was a one-off bad luck. I see now it is a faulty design. REI should discontinue this product.
Expensive and keep falling
Very expensive. Nose guards fall off and get lost. Won't stay on my nose
Favorite pair of glasses
I originally purchased these glasses for backcountry missions but find myself wearing them almost every day. Super comfy and great quality.
Good sun and snow protection
I bought a cheaper version ( all plastic)of these about 5 years ago for my husband. He still has that pair and still uses them. But they are showing wear so we upgraded last year to these Julbo Glaciers. We live in the mountains and take daily hikes no matter what the weather or season. Good sunglasses are a must to protect our eyes from the summer sun or the snow. My husband has only good comments about the glasses. They give him good protection both forward and to the sides. They are tinted dark which works well for him. They fit perfect. And, not that it really matters, but he looks good in them. The only negative I can say about the Glacier sunglasses is that the first pair of this model that we bought had the plastic clip on one of the leather side panels bend out where it would not hold the panel on the frames. But because of REI’s great return policy I still give it 5 stars. I live too far from an REI store to just run in and return an item. But it was easy to get a return shipping label on line and hand the package to our UPS driver the next time I saw him. Then I reordered another pair ( the way REI makes you do it). So I got nicked $17 for return shipping and rewards adjustment. But because I had to reorder the sunglasses I qualified for a $20 gift certificate. Which I promptly used to buy an item I really needed. So glasses are good REI is good. All is good.
Stylish and versatile!
This may be my favorite pair of sunglasses yet! Super high quality materials which make this a durable and very versatile pair of eye wear. I have hiked, biked, skied and lounged in these glasses! Would highly recommend to someone looking for a protective yet stylish pair of sunglasses.
