Rated 2 out of 5 by from best for calf less or long legged women I've used Thorlo hiking socks for years and wanted to see if the REI merino socks would wick any better. I ended up with bad chafing on my ankles. I wear wool without issues, but these are an inch and a half taller than thorlos with a tight band at the top. This hits me in the calf, and if I turn down the socks to avoid a blood clot, its extra tight with too much chafing to wear more than one day. I wear tall boots, so the short socks won't work. Luckily I have a serger so I can trim the top band off and still make these work, but I'll be going back to thorlos unless REI shortens the sock (in the liners, as well)BTW, my legs are long enough that I have to buy "tall" socks in street socks to fit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible socks These socks cause blisters and they chafe. Thought I was going to have to change my hiking boots until I discovered the problem was the sock. The last time I went snowboarding, the top of these socks were so tight that they cut off circulation, and it took a week for the lines to disappear from my legs.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from could use a redesign First of all, I never wear hiking socks (except toe socks) without liners. Liners are the #1 reason why I don't get blisters. These socks are cushy and the wicking properties of the liner/sock combination keeps my feet free from sweat. These keep my feet warm in winter, and aren't too hot for summer. That said, I have to echo other reviewers... the tops are too, too darn tight! My lower legs/ankles tend to swell and these and the too-tight liners leave deep dents, even if I scrunch them down around my ankles or the outside of my hightop boots. I do not have cankles either and am rather small-boned. I'm about ready to switch to men's in the hope that the tops are looser. I will say the fit around the foot itself is superb and they do not stretch out and bunch up around the foot mid hike (and I have narrow feet). Just please loosen the fit around the ankles REI because this cannot be good for circulation! Despite the too tight ankles, I am still recommending these because I roll the tops over my mids/high tops to take the pressure off my ankles. They still are super cushy and other brands have stretched out/bunched in the foot area mid hike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite socks These socks have flat toe seams and good cushioning. Most reviewers complained that the tops are too tight, but I cut the top bands off all my socks, so I can't comment on that. But these stay up even without the top band, and I haven't had a problem with them unraveling. I wear a shoe size 5.5 or 6, and the small fits well with room in front to wiggle my toes, which I like. They don't bunch. I've tried SmartWool, Thorlo, Lorpen, Wigwam, Goodhew and more, and these are my favorite. Lorpens are also good but they are a bit tighter in the calf and have a tendency to shrink and become tight in the toe. I've had bad luck with SmartWool in that their sizing is inconsistent and the toe seams can be bothersome. Maybe SmartWool has improved in recent years but I've found my favorite socks so I'm sticking with them. They wash and dry perfectly and they wear well. Sometimes I put them in the dryer but when I can I air dry them because I think they'll last longer that way. I use the top bands as pony tail/bun holders because they're much kinder to hair than anything you can buy in the store.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from super soft and stretcy First of all, a disclaimer: the only wilderness I see regularly is the urban jungle. I wear these with exclusively with Doc Martens and galoshes, and on an occasional hike. That said, I have owned and worn these socks and the equivalent SmartWool version for 3+ years and both brands have served me well. For me, the main difference is in how they age. The REI socks have stayed soft and stretchy - I enjoy pulling them on in the morning, and they have retained their cushioning a bit better than the SmartWool. That said, I recently noticed my REI socks beginning to wear through where heel meets ankle. In contrast, my SmartWool socks, though a bit stiffer and more matted for wear, have yet to show holes. But honestly, any sock that can keep up with me for 3 years is doing its job just fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So cozy These are like having your feet in a teddy bear. So smooshy soft and cozy. The toe seams are very nice (and I am very picky about that). I have the thick socks, so they are good in my boots until my feet swell. I keep a backup pair of thinner socks just in case. I love these for around the house without shoes. They wash very well. One thing - I wear a ladies' size 6 1/2 shoe and 7 boot. I would size down rather than up to avoid a lot of excess fabric.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warmest Socks Ever I have tried every supposed warm sock on the market and this one is the warmest I have found. My feet seem to stay cold but not in these. They form perfectly to the foot with no bunching and wash well. I currently own 1 pair that I wear every other day between washings and they show no signs of wear. Back today to buy more so I can wear them everyday.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great socks as far as cushion Can't speak on how long they'll last, as I've only worn them a handful of times. BUT if you are prone to hot feet, you'll sweat. They are super comfortable! And I've been hiking in them in ~50-65F. I did wear them for two days straight and they never smelled! And I was sweaty.
