Unhappy with the prepackaged options available on the market, I thought I could create healthier meals on my own so that's what lead me to the Backpacking Kit. The meal kit does not contain sodium so you are able to control the amount in your food. I use the boil in a bag method for cooking. You can reduce cook time if you pre-soak the vegatables before you cook so in the morning before I head out I add water so they are nice and soft by dinner time. I add them to pasta and usually add a protein. Also use bouillon cubes and other seasonings to add flavor. Great recipes included, but you can create your own. Great way to save money while on the trail and have something healthy to eat!!!

I wanted to like this!

I bought this after seeing the display inside the REI store "Award Winning". I thought this would be a great way to add vegtables to my Mountain House meals for backpacking. Unfortunately even after soaking peas, carrots and greenbeans in water for over an hour, they were were still dehydrated and tasted bad because of that. There are no cooking instructions at all either. I wanted to like this, but it just turned out to be one of the worst purchases ever for me.

Great shortcut

A great way to add variety to trail meals and simplify meal planning in one step. I don't have the time or energy to dehydrate a wide variety of foods, but this item solves the problem. It's now easy to plan a variety of meals with different veggies. Just pick a base (rice, pasta, etc) and add dried beans & vegetables from the kit. One warning, these are highly dehydrated items, much drier than what you're likely to make at home. This does mean a bit of flavor loss, but not catastrophic. Be sure to add, or carry, seasonings. I also like to add some olive oil to balance out the flavor. The beans take some soaking (long enough to set up your tent and bear cache) and few minutes of simmering to fully rehydrate.

Not Bad

The food is good quality and the recipes are actually good. Just make sure you don't forget the salt and seasonings or you'll be eating bland food for as long as you're out there - a couple of weeks in my case, which really sucked. I'm giving it 4 stars because some of the ingredients do not cook as well as the instructions indicate. The peas, for example, are supposed to be ready after simmering for 10 minutes. I gave it 15, 20, 25 minutes and finally gave up. The things weren't getting any softer. It was like eating Corn-Nuts - bland Corn-Nuts

I would buy this product again and again

I used this product while rafting down the Grand Canyon. It was a great lunch/dinner option for me because I am gluten free and opted out of the group meals.. We didn't have much space so it worked perfectly. I brought along a couple things of chicken broth and just mixed everything with that a hot/cold water depending on the mood. Everything tasted great. I loved the beans, onions, carrots and cabbage the most. I was gone for 12 days and came back with enough to last me another week or so! I would definitely take it on a back packing trip or even camping.

My new standard for thru-hiking

I purchased this amazing box of goodies for a 3-day, 2-night getaway for two, and there was plenty of food left over. I was overwhelmed by how many different ingredients were in the box. The recipe list also helped since I was in a hurry when making the purchase and didn't have time to look up what I was able to make with all the ingredients in the box. If every stop on the Appalachian Trail carried this box, life would have been so much more simple and MUCH more cheaper when I hiked for 2 months on the AT last year.

Great for work and play

Great kit. Easy one stop shop for almost everything you need. I only wish REI had the 30 pk variety kit, cause it has TVP as well. I use this backpacking and hiking. I also keep one of the kits in my work truck with a jetboil, it comes in handy when my normal 8hr day turns into 18hrs and I need something to eat. Quick cook time is awesome. Presoaking for 15-30min drastically lowers the cook time saving you on fuel.

Great Buy!

I thought this was a great price when I saw it! After I picked it up that day I made a meal with it, just adding rice and it was pretty good! Cooks fast, and there is enough variety to keep your taste buds satisfied (maybe bring a little seasoning to bring up the flavor). Makes a lot of food, so you only have to bring a few bags with you and it will last several weekend camping trips.

Great and easy to use product.

If you are looking for lightweight, healthy meals (and gluten-free to boot) then look no further. I have made and combined the meals with the recipes provided, and have also added to other food products to make it either go further, or improve taste. Great product, and hard to beat the price compared to other dehydrated/freeze-dried food products.

You can't go wrong here

As a backcountry cookbook author and recipe developer I have used nearly every item that Harmony House Foods carries. Simply put their items are some of the best out there. Their items work both in cold and hot meals. The beans are precooked so only need to be rehydrated to eat. All the vegetable are diced for quick use. If you like eating a wide range of food and you like good taste get the Backpackers kit. It will last you through many trips, has great shelf life and you will find yourself eating better than ever!

certainly tasty, but not perfect

I love that this pack makes backpacking trips ultra light while having variety. The only problem is the claim that you can just cook and eat with no soaking. Eating without soaking makes the digestive tract unhappy. Soaking is a must. With soaking, these vegetables are simply marvelous to have around.
