Works as advertised with one caveat
I use Sportlegs before a long day of skiing, hiking, or cycling. I have yet to try using it afterward. Things that are great: Sportslegs works. The quad burn I'd normally experience during a double black bump run is greatly reduced. Also, for what you get, the price is quite reasonable. Things that aren't so great: Beware of the recommended dosage if you take multivitamins or have a sensitive digestive system. I suggest taking one capsule for every 100 lbs of body weight instead of every 50 lbs before your activity. From there, you can build up to a higher amount if necessary. (The unfortunate result for over doing it is diarrhea.)
Amazing difference for high intensity efforts
I recently tried this product for a six hour mountain bike race. I frequently push myself into the anaerobic zone and feel an intense burn in my legs on climbs and soreness in the days after. During the race I was pushing myself harder and recovering faster than I have in the past. I set personal records on some part of the course on every single lap and actually finished my last lap the fastest with a 24mph sprint. I'm amazed at how different I felt in the race and with no soreness afterwards. This product may not work for everyone, but I'm guessing that it will be most effective for people who have more intense workouts and frequently feel a burn in their legs.
The Real Deal
I'm not really sure why they market Sportlegs primarily to only cyclists and skiers. I use this product for hiking and the results are noticeable. I can hiker longer and with less fatigue. The first couple times I used it, I only took an initial dose, an hour before exercise, as they recommend. I wasn't really sure if the product was effective at that point. Then, on some longer hikes, I followed their recommendation to redose every couple of hours. That was when I really noticed a difference. I'm not a huge fan of supplements, but this is one that works and I'll continue to use.
Relieves/avoids muscle tightness on big days
I’m 66 so cramping and soreness occur more easily on big days. My hiking buddy gave me Sport Legs on about 4 miles from trail head after summiting San Bernardino Peak in 2015 (17 mi/4600’ gain, 10,600’). My legs felt like boards at the time but within 20 minutes that was reduced by 2/3’s making the final push much easier. I haven’t taken a trip without them since and use preemptively. They served well on my Langley summit in July and Cactus to Clouds in October. I ran out of time on C2C, turned around at 9,900’ level for a 9,500’ gain (2.5 months post major surgery in August) but legs held up well. I’m finding much better recovery post hikes and strongly recommend trying this on your next big one.
Awesome product
Just bought prior to completing the Marine Corps 17.75k race. I usually hit a wall around 10miles and my legs seize up completely. I took a dose 30mins before the race and used a combo of Cliff ShotBlocks and an electrolyte mix throughout the race. I had ZERO cramping issues, sprinted to the finish line, and crossed it feeling like I could continue on. Whether or not my energy levels and feeling of strength was attributable to the SportLegs or the consistent refueling of my body throughout the race I'll never know but I'd like to think this supplement was instrumental in my performance. I'd highly recommend this. Definitely couldn't hurt to add to whatever routine you have before/during/after your races.
Skeptical at 1st
Thought this product was just hype, after keeping up with the big boys with much less effort then past rides, I'm a believer! I have a history of leg cramping around the 50-60 mile point, I was happy to have strong/cramp free legs. This stuff really works, No cramping and strong legs, don't ride without it now. Fantastic product!
A fountain of youth for this Boomer
This isn’t like any other sports supplement out there- and not just because you don’t have to take it every day. You only have to take it an hour before you’re going to do your sport, so a bottle will last you awhile. If you look at SportLegs’ ingredients, you might think, “Those are just vitamins and minerals. Stuff you take to stay healthy, not to make a difference in how you feel.” But it makes a difference you can defintely feel. You get to really enjoy skiing and cycling again. You can go noticeably harder, longer than you expect before you run into the “burn.” No stimulants or stuff to make you feel amped. It just feels like you’re in better shape. Or a decade younger. But you don’t pay for your fun with extra soreness the next day like you’d think. It’s like you get to dodge the lactic acid bullet that gets everybody else. And that, like the [...]ads used to say, is Priceless.
Save Your Money #2
This is a follow-up to my earlier review of this product where I said it had no discernible effect. I should have said more about myself so others can judge the relevance of my evaluation for themselves. I am a serious dayhiker going out probably 47-50 times a year. My most common hike is 4.6 miles w/3,900' elevation gain. I do this maybe 20-25 times a year. In other words, I know what this hike should feel like during and afterwards, and how long it takes me. It is on the basis of comparing this hike with and without Sportslegs that I said I couldn't tell any difference. BUT, I am 76 years old. It is very possible that my body can't metabolize the elements in Sportslegs the way a younger person's could. That might explain the difference between my low evaluation and others' high ones. So, if you're younger than me you might want to try it yourself. But I suggest buying a few small packets instead of the bottle until you know.
Works For Me (Skiing)
I'm late 50s and don't get as much exercise as I should, so my quads start to burn on long and/or bumpy runs. Especially out west where the runs are twice as long as the east. Sportlegs lets me ski longer and harder before I feel the burn and lets me extend my ski day by probably an hour or more before my legs are shot and it's time for a beer. I take the recommended dosage before hitting the hill and again at lunch (usually 3 hours later). Works for me. YMMV...
Save Your Money
I can't tell any difference at all between days I've taken these pills before and during a big hike and days when I haven't. Since it's impossible to do exactly the same hike on the same day twice, once with and once without, my one-person trial isn't scientifically conclusive but I suggest saving your money for a cold one after your hike.
