Not for Wet Weather
These were a Christmas gift, so I shouldn't be complaining. If you keep these socks dry, then they will work as intended. However, once wet, they are basically useless. They do not have an elasticated cuff, so when you stretch them to put them on, and then they get wet, the cuffs droop, funneling water into your shoes. A DWR treatment may help with performance, but as is these have no water resistance. Once wet, your thermal barrier is lost as these are super thin = cold feet. I would recommend spending the extra $ for a goretex type sock, if you are wanting something with water resistance.
Good water socks
Bought these for a trip to Utah to use for cayoning/canyoneering. I typically wear a size 10 shoes, and these were a little big. Not sloppy big, but they top of the sock loosened up a good bit in the water and fell down. This allowed for sand and other small debris to get into my boots. A minor detail and nearly unavoidable, but thought I'd mention it. Overall, a great water sock. No hot spots or blisters from rubbing.
Saved my freezing toes!
I love these socks! I have Reynaud's disease -- a medical condition that describes poor circulation in the extremities, leading to cold fingers and toes all the time. Before I found Storm Socks, I had to be careful about my toes getting dangerously cold, numb, and frostbitten when outside in cold weather. These are lightweight neoprene socks that act like a "wet suit" for your feet. They are not waterproof, they are designed to keep a warm layer of body heat next to your skin, even if in water or wind. They are thin and fit inside your regular shoe size. I wear them with cross-country and skate-ski boots as well as telemark ski boots. I also wear them inside hiking boots for winter hiking or snow shoeing. I've converted at least three other friends to these socks as well! My first pair lasted me two seasons of heavy use, and I am buying my second pair right now.
Faulty Design
I bought these socks and the regular Seirus stormsocks. These socks feel a bit heavier and would probably provide better warmth, BUT they were so tight fitting that I could not get them on over my feet. When I finally managed to get one on, it took me 10 min. to get it off! I returned them to REI and kept the regular stormsock. I ordered the Large, which is my correct size, but the fit was impossible. Ordering the XLarge would have solved the on/off problem, but they would be too bulky and would bunch up in my boots.
NOT Waterproof
I bought these specifically because I needed WATERPROOF socks for cold weather kayaking. They are not even close to being waterproof; the fabric may be slightly water resistant, but the seams leak like sieves. As others mentioned, they have basically no stretch, so they are hard to put on and slip down, but I could live with that.
Great for wet or cold bike rides & walks
I've had one pair of these for years, and ordered this new pair recently to have a spare. Sadly, the new pair is smaller than the old pair, though marked as the same size (XL.) I wear these over a pair of merino wool socks in my SPD clip-in biking sandals, which keeps me warm enough to ride down to 30 degrees. Kind of pricey, but highly recommended. I only wish there were an even larger size available so I could get them on more quickly and easily.
Decent price but has its problems
Cons: I am 6'3" 200lbs with shoe size 13 so I bought the XL size (11-13). They are a real pain to get on at this size. I've tried pulling them straight up, rolling them up from the toe, and other variations with little success. The rear (heel) seam is right along the bottom of the heel which makes for uncomfortable long-term travel and likely a few blisters. Front (toe) seam is just between the big and second toe, which is fine for me but people with other toe sizes it could possibly cause blisters if you travel a lot in them. Pros: Once you get them on (10 minutes later), they feel great on the foot, with the exception of the seams. I don't expect them to be waterproof but they are plenty warm for wading in very cold water.
These aren't waterproof - don't buy them
If you're looking for waterproof socks don't buy these because they're not.
Great Winter Running Sock
A few of the reviewers have complained about how difficult it is to put on/take off these socks. While true (and I struggled at first with this issue), I would recommend the following - concurrently purchase some BodyGlide and apply liberally to your feet before putting socks on. After the BodyGlide is applied, the process becomes simple.
Kept my toes warm during bike commute
It was 28 degrees this morning (and windy) when I biked to work. These socks under another pair of fleece socks kept my toes comfortable throughout my ride. I wish they made liners to wear under my gloves because my poor fingers were pretty cold for the entire 45 minute commute.
