Awesome Breakfast!

I usually don't post reviews, but I was reading the other reviews about this breakfast, and I think a lot of them are related to user-error. It sounds like people aren't following the cooking instructions. Backpacker's Pantry eggs need to be cooked in a skillet. They're not like Mountain House eggs that you just add boiling water to. And, even though they take a little more work, I think Backpacker's Pantry eggs are really really tasty. Nice job Backpacker's Pantry. It's spicy and has really good flavor, and the beans give added protein for us vegetarians. Other people considering buying this product - if you follow the cooking instructions, you'll be very very pleased!

Really bad

Bought this product along with other backpacking breakfast items to try them out. This way I know for myself what I like, etc. I did not realize when I bought it that it has to be cooked in a pan. Not a big deal since I was doing this at home anyways. But I would not be using something that requires a pan. I followed directions PRECISELY. Stuff smelled ok, but turned out horrible. I ate only one bite. Now it gets funny. I put the plate out for the birds, by end of day it was all there. I put it out for critters, next day....all there. That's bad. This is one product that I would end up going hungry for the day.

Maybe I just made it wrong...

Okay, I added hot water and waited just like it said...The liquefied gruel that came out honestly looked like vomit...all be it, it smelled much better than that. To be honest, the flavor wasn't that bad for this kind of food, but the texture came out disgusting...AND it was very salty!. My wife had one bite and went to oatmeal...I had about 6 bites (well, slurps) and I went to oatmeal, too. We packed out the rest in it's own ziplock pouch. To be honest, I haven't had a dehydrated egg meal that I have liked, yet. It may be the nature with powered or dehydrated eggs, I don't know. But, this is my experience with this product anyway. Enjoy the photo series...

Great - but not for backpacking

Ok – I did what quite a few others have done – and picked this up without reading the details. This is dried eggs; not freeze dried and dehydrated cooked eggs. It makes up about 300ml of egg/beans/cheese mix – that then needs cooking up in a pan. Not really backpacking food at all. That being said – it was good. Following the instructions – this turned out really well. Could have done with a few minutes more to rehydrate the black beans – some were still a little crunchy. With some hot sauce this could be a real hit for car camping. Verdict: 8/10 for taste 6/10 for cost Not for the trail – but great for car camping.

People need to read directions

I just need to repeat the point that Mitch makes in his review. People really need to read the package and realize what they are buying. These are not freeze dried eggs they are POWDERED eggs. When you add hot water to this it makes beaten raw eggs not cooked eggs like a freeze dried product. As such they cost less that half what the Mountain House eggs cost. I have found these very helpful in a variety of recipes and once cooked are pretty good on their own with the addition of a little more spice. But that's just my taste most folks will find them fine just as they are.

Great meal if you follow the directions!

I stayed away from this meal because of earlier negative reviews, but received these as part of a Father's Day gift and decided to take it with on a 4 day backpacking trip to Michigan's Porcupine Mountains. My son and I made it for breakfast our first morning and I was very pleasantly surprised by the result. I added some crumbled bacon and served them on tortillas and they were great. Excellent flavor and texture. I very much agree with the last 2 reviewers that you need to follow the instructions. If you do that, this makes a hearty breakfast for 2.

Not bad not good

Received this in a BP 72 hour type box. At first this sounded really good. Then I flipped it over and read the directions. This is a product that will not work for me. Requires a skillet which I do not have and would not want to carry in. So I cooked this up at home. Rehydration time of the beans with cold water is definitely going to be around a 1/2 hour or more. Taste was not bad. but not great. Same with texture its ok. All in all its not that bad. I've had a lot worse from BP. I could eat this in a emergency. But will not be taking this on the trail. Way to inconvenient. May be ok for car campers but if your car camping why not bring real eggs instead of this stuff.

Awful flavor and texture, don't waste your money

We just spent a week out at Mueller SP, CO tent camping (IE no fridge), so we stocked up on a lot of these dehydrated camp food packets. Mueller SP is situated at around 9,500 feet elevation so cook times are a bit longer. My wife and I loved the flavor of this meal. For this meal, we prepared it in accordance with the instructions (due to the increased elevation). Analysis: this was one of the most awful dehydrated meals I've eaten! The flavor was horrible and the texture was terrible. The consistency of the meal turned up to be soup-like given the amount of hot water added... Even with a decreased hot water recipe, I would NOT buy this again - EVER!

Not too bad.

It’s not a greasy spoon, but it’s still a tasty outdoor meal. Even though the directions say “cold or hot water and then let stand for twenty minutes”, I would let it stand thirty to forty minutes when using cold water to fully reconstitute the dried beans.

Awesome Breakfast!

Read the Instructions. Know what you're getting into. This will take you 20 minutes to make breakfast, but once it's done it's awesome! Delicious and no big deal to prepare if you're used to cooking for yourself at home anyway. Cooks up to a fluffy texture. We eat a high protein & high fat diet, so we pumped this up every day with extra OvaEasy powdered eggs. Perfect.
