Good sustenance for on the trail!
I first tried it with cold protein milk just before an extended bike ride. Gave me enough energy to power through the ride. Flavor was good if you don’t mind powdered milk which I don’t mind. Loved the coconut and almonds. The oats and blueberries were a bit chewy. I saved a little to try with hot water. The buttery flavor was much more pronounced and yummy. Didn’t seem as chewy either. Would recommend hot water method particularly on a chilly fall morning. Packaging is very sturdy for backpacking/camping trip. Great that it was gluten free! I received this product free in exchange for my unbiased review.
Very tasty Breakfast or snack
This was a great snack or breakfast, I tried it with Hot water preferring a warm breakfast, but it says you can make it with Hot or Cold water. The mixture blended well, then I let it sit for a few minutes to Thicken up a bit. The flavor was very good, it is a simple mix with Oats, Almonds Coconut milk and the blueberries. The milk helped make it creamy and was a nice addition. One cool thing was the blueberries floated so at the end, I had eaten the cereal and got the blueberries as a bit of a sweet dessert. The coconut was an excellent addition. I will take this next backpacking trip for sure!
It's good, I think there are better
Got this for free, but here is an actual honest review from a 20-year REI member: This is a reasonable tasting breakfast type granola in a backpacking just-add-water format. The milk tastes rather milky/creamy, much moreso than the soymilk that is in my usual breakfast granola with mountain berries. I prefer this real milk taste. The granola here is crunchy, and there is a decent amount of blueberries. It was tasty, and I ate it all no problem. In fact, it's only a single serving which left me wanting more. My usual is a 2-serving package and in the morning before long trail miles, I want to put lots of fuel in. It would not be efficient to carry two of these packages for breakfast. I would like to see a 2-serving option. In comparing the nutrition information against my usual breakfast granola, Backpacker's Pantry has a shocking 17g of Saturated Fat, thats 87% of your allotment on a 2,000 calorie diet. My usual granola has 0g for 0%. Sugars are about the same, as are Sodium, and Protein. 60mg of Cholesterol here @21%, with my usual at 0mg and 0%. I would encourage you to compare the nutrition facts with what you're used to, perhaps this is an improvement. The cost here per serving is more expensive than my usual (which is also available at REI), while not delivering taste and volume commensurate with the higher price. There are better values in the backpacking granola breakfasts available at REI. In the end, I would rather buy my usual brand of breakfast granola over this. Better per serving price, 2 servings per pack, more fruit. However, if my usual was sold out I would absolutely buy this over no breakfast at all, a couple cliff bars, or something makeshift from the grocery store. This is a good granola, to be sure. I would recommend my preferred granola to a friend, and would mention this as well but with caveats. They do however receive bonus points awarded for donating 1% of all sales to environmental groups. 4 out of 5 stars!
Not as advertised
I hate to give this three stars because its not BP fault. REI put in the description and picture this is the organic blueberry version but what I received said nothing about Organic package or ingredients. I'm disappointed I paid for organic and didn't get it. Unfortunately there was no time to return the product because of our trip. But on that note, my family really enjoyed it. My daughter said it was something she could eat during hiking/ camping trips. My husband and son also thought it was tasty.
Great on the trails!
First time I tried this, I was very pleasantly surprised. I wanted to try it at home before I took it camping with me. I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually very good for "trail" food. I'll take this with me on all my hikes/trips from now on!
Not the best, not the worst
I was very excited to try this because of the flavor. I'm not trying to bash this product, but to say the least it has a lot of room for improvement. I'll start with what I liked. What I liked: The cook time was a lot quicker compared to other backpacking meals. The meal also provided a hefty amount of protein. What I did not like: The evaporated milk had a very chalky (almost steamed milk) flavor and texture on the rest of the contents of the bag. The blueberries did not seem to re-hydrate. There were more almonds then granola. The bottom line: Flavor wise I did not care for this product. I would not recommend it for backpacking. It is one of those things you can eat some of it but not finish it. It would be a survival food for me none the less.
Delicious! Hot is the way to go
This stuff is super tasty! I've had a lot of powdered milk in my day and it usually doesn't taste much different than the water you add to it. Not sure what they did with this, but the milk actually tastes really good. The granola is really good and there are plenty of dried blueberries - which meals like this usually tend to skimp on a bit. I would say overall the meal is a tad on the sweet side for me, but it still tasted fantastic and I would definitely eat it again. I tried it both with cold water and hot water added and hot water tasted way, way better. I wouldn't bother eating this cold - unless there aren't any other options - but even cold it was still pretty good.
Delicious meal
Delicious, enjoyed the mix of ingredients. Made Backpackers Pantry with cold water but would also have made with hot water. I think Backpackers Pantry would be great with either hot or cold water. I ate the meal in a bowl but could have eaten out of pouch after removing the oxygen absorber packet. Had this meal for breakfast on a chilly morning RV camping in Northern Minnesota. Backpackers Pantry meal started my day out right with a good quick breakfast.
Keeps me going
I’ve section hiked over 1800 miles of the AT so far and had this 620 calorie breakfast nearly every day on the trail. Keeps me going for hours.
Convenient, but very buttery
I took this granola on a quick overnighter in the Cascades and had mixed feelings about it. For pros: The self-contained package was easy to stash in my pack and re-hydrate without making much of a mess. This granola is high in protein and provided a quick and easy breakfast. However, for cons: This granola has a very buttery texture and tastes way too creamy for my liking. Consequently, it felt heavy in my stomach, and I felt a bit sluggish after eating it. For an overnighter, the trash from the packaging was not a huge issue, although that would likely be a problem on a longer backpacking trip. Bottom line: if you are looking for a quick and easy breakfast, I think there are better alternatives on the market.
