Sturdy cart for short trip needs.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've owned one cart for 5 years and recently bought a second cart. Overall, I've been happy, but more with my original cart than the new one. The new cart doesn't have the foam glued into place, so they keep moving when the boat is on the cart. Very frustrating. Did a "wo/man-powered weekend" with our kayaks recently, and the wear on the straps is concerning from two days of use, especially on the new cart, since it was the first use. Like, should it wear through to the metal like that? The black straps have transferred black stuff onto the hull of our kayaks, so extra cleaning is now needed there.
Ok Cart. Not woth the price.
I have two of these carts and they are ok. Mine didn't come with straps so I use a single tie down strap wrapped around my boats. Yes. There is an issue with the straps rubbing the wheels and the cart folding up. This could be easily solved if the company would add some tabs or eye hooks perpendicular to the cross bars so a strap could be looped through/under. Bearing life on the wheels is pretty short (70lbs is my typical load). I had to replace the originals with some wheels from the hardware store after one season.
Easy to deploy and stow
This little cart is great. It goes together quickly and comes apart just as easily. It fits into my rear hatch with no problems. (It does take a lot of space because of the 2 wheels, so if you're packing gear, you may have trouble). I've used it several times on a 600' portage over mostly grassy terrain. After a couple of tries getting the best positioning on the boat (I try to go as close to center, but also catch some deck rigging to run the strap through to give more security), it makes the portage much easier than carrying. The time it took to put unpack, put together, secure, and portage was about the same as the other two people carrying their boats.
Easy install and good quality
Hobie kayak. It has to be over 120-130lbs loaded with gear including a cooler. On mostly smooth surfaces it rolls great. Only issue is hitting a rut or stump will cause the wheels to move out of alignment. But I’m sure this has something to do with my heave load. I’m going to look into mounting a second strap to keep the wheels aligned. Mush easier to install than the Hobie wheels that have forks that have to be aligned through the kayak…requiring you to lift the kayak 3ft in the air. Sometimes this isn’t easy after a long paddle. These wheels are much easier to install. I highly recommend these wheels. Just remember, with a heave load pay attention to ruts and stumps.
Great kayak cart... Larger model needed for over 28" width
Cart works great, particularly on hard surfaces. The larger model is necessary for any kayaks over 28" wide for better stability and to avoid straps rubbing on wheels (Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120-30" and 2019 Hobie Outback-32"). NOTE, strap rubbing can be alleviated by crossing the strap over to opposite side, however strap length may require that you move the cart further back at more narrow part of the kayak (this of course adds to the carry weight on the front)
Tires cut straps and don't roll in sand.
Repeatedly Unsatisfactory. First use (with Hobie Outback & gear - total weight under 90 pounds), tire edges rubbed half way through straps in 1/3 mile on pavement. (Re-routing straps around cart frame solved rubbing, but my straps are unrepairable.) Fifth use with same boat & gear was first time used on sand. Wheels quickly bogged down and acted like plows. (Removing cart and dragging hull to beach without cart proved easier.)
G'Day Jeff Sorry to learn that you had a less-than-ideal experience with your Sea to Summit Kayak Cart. With regard to your two points: 1. The abrasion of the tie-down straps. The Small Kayak Cart is recommended for boats up to 24", the Medium Cart for boats up to 30". The width of your Hobie Outback (34") means that the tie-down straps will come into contact with the wheels, unless the left strap is routed to the right side of the boat and vice versa, thus changing the angle at which the straps are oriented to the frame. We have replacement straps available and will happily supply them to you free of charge if you email your address to warranty@seatosummit.com 2. Use on soft sand. Unfortunately, the 3.5" width wheels (which work well on harder surfaces) are not designed for use on soft sand. Carts with wider sand-capable wheels are available from other manufacturers. If you intend to use the cart on soft sand, and would like to return the cart to the retailer for a full refund, we will be happy to facilitate that process. Please email us at info@seatosummit.com and let us know the name and location of the retailer where the cart was purchased and the date of purchase. weak cart.
Finally got my straps fixed. See previous review. Have the medium cart . Took 80 lb canoe over a somewhat irregular portage. cart bent in the middle. Clearly does not hav a weight capacity of 70 kg. Have bent it back but this product basically sucks. Would not waste your monies.
Great company response.
Had problems with my large cart. When brought to company' s attention they responded immediately! I am impressed with the results. On this basis alone I would recommend them. And when the cart did work it worked well . Problems seem to be rectified.
Good product
Very happy with this cart. Easy to use, well made and well designed. And it sure makes hauling a heavy kayak from car to launch site a LOT easier. Which means I'll kayak more often!
design flaw
First day out using my cart on a nice flat protage. Straps designed so rub on wheel with a wide canoe. Cut stabilizing strap. Will be returning it. Either assembly or design flaw.
GDay Reinhard. The Small Cart is designed to work with boats with a beam (hull width) of up to 24). Using the cart with a wider boat will cause contact between the tie-down strap and the wheel. There are two solutions to this: 1. Cross the straps over so the strap attached to the left side of the frame goes up to the starboard side of the boat (and the strap attached to the right side of the frame goes up to the port side of the boat). 2. Use the wider Medium Cart. If you drop us an email at warranty@seatosummit.com we’ll be happy to assist you further.
