I almost exclusively wear Vivo Barefoot shoes in my everyday life. I have to have a wide toe box and generally a wide shoe. For a long Adevnture race through the Tetons I needed something that let me hike for 30+ miles without my feet gettting fatigued and my arch failing. It also needed to work as a mountain biking shoe. These shoes even with only a week to break them in performed so well. I was side hilling all day, smashing through sage brush and mountains of sharp scree for 14 hours in these things. They still still look brand new. I thought for sure I had kicked a hole in these more than once. I was tripping over everything and smashing into rocks and they are totally fine. It doesn’t make sense. Just a fantastic shoe.
I wore these on an AT thru hike, and was able to make it the entire way on only TWO pairs of these shoes - the first pair lasting roughly 1200 miles, the second pair lasting the last 1000. Though there was some early separation in the toe on both pairs as mentioned in other reviews, it never separated to the point where any holes were in the shoe. After a few hundred miles (500?) on both pairs, I did get some small holes in the upper mesh, always on the right foot first. The outsoles were the real star of the shoe; they wore out very slowly, and still had fantastic grip during the end of their life in all weather conditions. I always felt supremely confident in my footing in these shoes, except for a few times on really wet granite in Maine after having already put 900+ miles on the second pair. When switching from the first to the second pair, I initially had some rough blistery skin around my heel due to trying to hike too many miles (20+) too quickly, but after spending a day or two easing them in, I had no further issues and they became quite comfortable pretty quickly.
First weekend hiking with these in Nevada and I noticed the tip of the outsole started to peel. Now after a season of hiking in my home state of GA the peeling has gotten worse. Otherwise it is a great show with stiff support for my multiday trips on the AT. I've run is these as well and have been impressed. I'll try Gorilla Glue for the outsole but still disappointed...
Toe de-laminated after 25 miles. Was pretty happy with the shoe out of the box, it felt a little more responsive than the MTN Racer, and I was happy with it on the first run. Noticed the toe had delaminated after the second run. I contacted the manufacturer and they told me to return it to the store despite it being a warranty issue (Exactly 30 days after purchase). Since the V3 of their products (suspiciously when DSW bought them) the quality of their shoes has deteriorated. Wide shoes have vastly improved my running happiness. It has been a shame to watch large corporations acquire those brands and neglect them to squeeze margin out of them.
Just finished 214 miles on JMT. Not 1 blister. Crossed rivers and streams without taking off shoes. Complemented the rock plate with custom Orthodics from Road Runner sports. They are sturdy and dry quickly. Wore the tread out near the end as expected with any shoe and it was dicy coming down sandy granite steps decending 6,000' to Happy Isle...lol. Totally recommend.
Loved this shoe from day 1, great grip and no break in period. Thought I had found my forever shoe and was ready to buy a back up pair. However, within a month I noticed the fabric around the top lace hole was wearing away. I don't even understand how that could happen in a month. It's a shame the quality is poor, otherwise this would be a 5 star shoe!
These could easily be a 4 or 5. They have great grip, toe box is fantastic for long hikes and the rock plate is also great -- so very comfortable with s moderate backpack on regular to rocky trails. However, the shoe laces were way too long -- hazardously long (and both laces frayed at the end within a couple of months). Replacing the laces were not so straightforward. The eyelets are fabric and very narrow, which makes it quite difficult to threrad new laces. Also, why should I have to replace laces on shoes that are only a few monts old -- why can't they come with laces that are an appropriate length.
Bought these for the wide toebox for thru hiking. They are comfortable and the wide toe box was nice and I got no blisters after about 75 miles with them over 4 days. But they have almost zero cushion. Even with thick Superfeet Hike insoles, this lack of cushion caused immense pain in my heels and ball of my foot starting after about 12 miles the first day, which got worse and started happening sooner each day. To top it all off, the lack of cushion caused me intense shin splints which made me have to get off trail. I wouldn't recommend these to anyone planning on doing more than a quick day hike or trail run.
Both toes had delaminated by 35 miles. Returned. I really liked the fit and they had good grip on multiple surfaces. After wearing the other "toe box" shoe for years, I was excited for a change. I suppose being bought out by a conglomerate can change things, though the premium price doesn't seem to be one.2
Front toe area delamination. Started after a month or so. Old v.3 versions showed delamination after maybe a year, and then only just a bit. These shoes used to be great. I’ve worn 3 pair flat without significant delamination. I read that the v.4 came out after DSW bought Topo. Accident? I don’t believe in that kind of accident. I’m kicking myself that I bought them on a great sale—not from REI. If I had, they’d go right back. I think REI is going to get a lot of returns on these.
